This remarkable vintage Chinese "good luck" small box has pushed out enamel jumping and leaping frogs and foo dogs in beautiful colors. Greens, light blue, blues, red, pink, yellow, black are amongst the colors setting off an off-white enamel honeycomb patterned background. It is dimensional and textural. The bottom is polished copper and patinated metal connecting all the other parts of the box. The interior is wood. It is from the original very vintage condition. This dates from 1890s and is truly remarkable. The bottom has been newly polished but one cannot polished the other parts of the metal that has enamel. Looks like museum quality! Poppies, golden-accented in analagous colors of blue and orange, creep up their leafy green stalks which sag from the heavy weight of the flowers. Like tired heavy-lidded eyes, the poppies symbolize hypnos’ sleep-inducing effects. Dammouse’s somnific symbolism evokes an other-worldly dream-like state and acts as a vehicle to tap into the imagination. Much more than a pretty face, or a pretty vase, this is a sublime piece of art, and Dammouse makes clear the influence of Braquemond and others by employing this Symbolist style. Beaudelaire’s credo that “Beauty must contain the absolute and the particular, the eternal and the transitory” aptly applies. Created while both Chaplet and Edouard Dammouse were employed by Haviland & Co. at its Paris location, this vase is a prime example of Chaplet’s early creative output of matte brown stoneware. Both artists demonstrate a strong link and affinity for Japonisme in the vase’s traditional form and in the painterly approach Dammouse brings to the enamel glaze. His treatment of enhancing the floral decoration with gold detailing calls to mind Kintsugi aesthetic principles. Affixed to the vase’s underside is its original label indicating it was sold at the chic A la Paix, a Parisian gallery located on the prestigious Avenue de l’Opera which opened in 1891, specializing in glass and ceramic objects of art.
Ernest Chaplet (1835-1907) Not only was Chaplet France’s premier studio ceramist, the example he set of personally creating a ceramic object from the conceptual phase through modeling, firing and glazing - constantly reaching for new and innovative modes of expression and technique - elevated the notion of a ceramist from artisan to Artist. While Director of Production for Haviland & Co., Chaplet expanded their focus from porcelain into stoneware production and developed the barbotine method of painting earthenware with liquid clay as well as conducted extensive research in glaze techniques. He was awarded a Gold Medal in 1889 at Paris’ l’Exposition Universelle for his revolutionary sang de boeuf glaze. That same year, Chaplet opened his own atelier in Choisy-le-Roi where he continued to produce avant-garde stoneware and support younger talent.

This exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian silver inkstand / desk standish, has a rectangular form.
This inkstand is fitted with a gallery, embellished with impressive pierced and applied scrolling foliate ornamentation.
The shaped, incurved rims of the body and anterior rim of the sterling silver inkstand are ornamented with a paralleling applied gadroon decorated border.
The surface of the fox silver inkstand incorporates a concave oval pen receiver.
The body of the inkstand incorporates two ink bottle receivers flanking a rectangular stamp box.
The impressive hallmarked ink bottles each have a tapering cylindrical form and are embellished with further pierced scrolling foliate ornamentation; these ink bottles secure to the stand with a screw fitment to the underside.
Each ink bottle is fitted with a plain domed hinged cover and opens to allow access to the original glass liner.

In 1836, Johann Eisner established a glassworks in the Southern Bohemian town of Klostermühle, today part of the Czech Republic and called Klášterský Mlýn. His heirs sold the glassworks to Martin Schmid in 1849, and two years later Schmid sold it to Frank Gerstner, attorney-at-law, and his wife Susanne. Susanne was the widow (‘Witwe’ in German) of Johann Loetz, a glassmaker about whom we know very little.
Gerstner transferred sole ownership to Susanne shortly before his death in 1855, and she successfully led and expanded the company during the subsequent 20 years, manufacturing mainly crystal, overlay and painted glass.
In 1879, Susanne transferred the company – now called ‘Johann Loetz Witwe’ – to Maximilian von Spaun, the son of her daughter Karoline. One year later, von Spaun hired Eduard Prochaska and the two of them modernized the factory and introduced new, patented techniques and processes.
The Historicist Period
The first fruits of this collaboration were exciting innovations in Historicism glass, including Intarsia and Octopus glass and the very popular marbled (‘marmorisierte’) glass which imitated semi-precious stones like red chalcedony, onyx and malachite. Success at exhibitions in Brussels, Munich and Vienna were crowned by awards at the Paris World’s Exposition in 1889.
In 1897, von Spaun first saw Tiffany Favrile glass exhibited in Bohemia and Vienna, and this convinced him that the art nouveau style was also the way to go for Loetz Witwe. The next eight years were to be the most artistically significant and profitable period in the entire history of the company.
The Art Nouveau Period – the Glory Years
Loetz Paris-Expo1900Loetz Paris-Expo1900The glassworks created large numbers of its own new designs of iridescent, trailing art nouveau glass, sometimes in collaboration with well-known artists and designers like Marie Kirschner and Franz Hofstötter (aka Franz Hofstätter). The zenith of Loetz art nouveau glass was epitomized by the so-called Phänomen series of designs, much of it designed by Hofstötter, which won a Grand Prix (alongside Tiffany, Gallé, Daum and Lobmeyr) at the Paris World’s Exposition in 1900.
The company’s success during this period had two prime drivers – the technical expertise of Prochaska and the business acumen of von Spaun. Loetz Witwe created many of its own designs, and also supplied glass commissioned by major customers like E. Bakolowits (Vienna) and Max Emanuel...
