Monumental Harry Bertoia Silver Necklace, Bertoia Catalogue Raisonne D.JE.49
Located in Bloomfield Hills, MI
WEARABLE ART AN IMPORTANT DESIGN FOR A NECKLACE The necklace is unique and extraordinary. Because of its specific design elements it lays beautifully and comfortably on any body structure. This piece comes from a private collection. Provenance will accompany the piece. It has been authenticated by Val Bertoia and is listed in the Harry Bertoia Foundation Catalogue Raisonne # D.JE.49 having been authenticated as a Harry Bertoia piece. REPLY FROM CHRISTIE'S: "Dear Charles, thank you for contacting Christie's. I am absolutely stunned to see the necklace by Harry Bertoia you have submitted for feedback from us, and I would love to speak with you about the work at your earliest convenience. I am a great fan and a known expert in the work of Harry Bertoia, and I have handled over 600 of his sculptures, jewelry and art over the last 22 years. I have never seen a better piece of his jewelry, and it stands as one of the greatest objects in any category that he made. Michael Jefferson Senior Vice President International Senior Specialist Design" The following is from Beverly H. Twitchell, PhD, author of Bertoia: The Metalworker, London: Phaidon, 2019. She provides a very informative critique of Bertoia and his jewelry. Wearable Art an Important Design for a Necklace “Before Harry Bertoia enrolled at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1937 he had already mastered traditional jewelers’ techniques, but his engagement with Modernism led him to invent and use more direct methods. Instead of precious metals and gems, Bertoia made jewelry that appealed through its design, craftsmanship and the nature of its materials. That approach would make Bertoia a direct predecessor of the American Studio Crafts movement. So complex and cumulative are human perception and memory that we often do not know from where our own ideas come and without firm evidence, it is impossible to think we can establish the origins of an artist’s ideas. While his jewelry is entirely modern, chokers with multiple small pendants had come from ancient Mediterranean cultures: Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Italy, even from Europe and America at the turn of the last century. Did Bertoia see works in books, journals or at the Detroit Institute of Arts that resonated with him or did he invent this on his own, as he would so many other forms? Bertoia found inspiration in nature from an early age on a small farm in Italy and later in Cranbrook’s woods, on the beaches of southern California and in the fields near his home in eastern Pennsylvania where he lived after 1950. The fluidity and motion of the his jewelry characterize much of his art. In that spirit, too, he made jewelry that suited human anatomy and was animated by its wearer’s movement. Bertoia had the instincts of an engineer, as the intricacy of the present lot’s clasp and overall construction of the jewelry demonstrates. Large jewelry by Bertoia is very rare. A delight to the eye, and like all of Bertoia’s work it is timeless. Bertoia had the instincts of an engineer, as the intricacy of the present lot's clasp and the overall construction of this piece demonstrate. Closed, the necklace sits on a table in a surprisingly conical shape, but it is so flexible that it conforms to its wearer from her neck nearly to her shoulders. Each handmade section is riveted to its neighbors, allowing it to adjust to the body while the pendants curve in many directions: one fits the left clavicle so precisely that Bertoia likely tried it on Brigitta Valentiner, who became his wife in 1943. Other pendants face toward or away from each other, bending up or down. Each element has been hammered into multiple curves and worked in Bertoia’s hands. Large jewelry by Bertoia is very rare. A delight to the eye, this necklace no doubt caused a sensation in its day as it might at the 2022 Met Ball in ours, for like all of Harry Bertoia’s work, it is timeless.” Harry Bertoia (1915 – 1978) was an Italian-born American artist, jewelry creator and modern furniture designer. He was born in San Lorenzo d...

Monumental Important Art Deco Silver & Gilt Bronze Goddess G. Lavaroff
Located in New York City, NY
An exceptionally large and rare French Art Deco original bronze sculpture circa 1927 by a well known artist Georges Lavaroff (1895-1991) It's quite uncommon to find this very large size and notably featuring the silver and parcel gilt finish. The artwork features a majestic female nude, adorned with a stylized cloak in alternating stripes of gold and silver, which showcases a pyramid shape. The Egyptian goddess is depicted as an undraped figure with arms outstretched above her head, holding a crescent moon. She wears a north star headdress that adds to her regal appearance. The cloak is embellished with stars and a comet, and the female figure rests on a bed of stylized clouds. The sculpture is presented on its original black and gold marble base. All of these attributes add to the uniqueness and value of the artwork, making it even more remarkable and sought after by collectors and art enthusiasts. Water bottle shown for scale. Documentation : Les bronzes Art Deco de Georges Lavaroff, sculpteur Russe a Paris 1930 Kastelyn et Mazzucotelli. Georges Lavaroff was born in Sibera in 1895. He studied medicine and painting. After the revolution of 1917 he moved to Moscow and became a member of the Russian artists association where he began to exhibit his work and take part in shows as a member of the Association of artists of Revolutionary Russia. He then worked in France from 1927 until 1935. This period was the richest point of his profession where he produced his most famous works of Art Deco figures...

William Spratling Signed Sterling Silver Feather of Quetzalcoatal Taxco Bracelet
Located in Atlanta, GA
A vintage, circa 1940s signed sterling silver bracelet by William Spratling. This design is called Feather of Quetzalcoatl. According to "Spratling Silver: A Field Guide", by Phyllis Goddard, this bracelet was designed during William Spratling's first design period, 1931-1946. But first things first, who is Quetzalcoatl? According to this Wikipedia article, "The name Quetzalcoatl comes from the Nahuatl language and means "Precious serpent" or "Quetzal-feathered Serpent". In the 17th century, Ixtlilxóchitl, a descendant of Aztec royalty and historian of the Nahua people, wrote, "Quetzalcoatl, in its literal sense, means 'serpent of precious feathers' but in the allegorical sense, 'wisest of men'."" Ah! So that must be why Spratling called this design 'Feather of Quetzalcoatl! But hang on there, how did Spratling come to learn about Quetzalcoatl? Well according to the website Elisa Rolle, "When lecturing at the National University of Mexico's Summer School in 1926-1928, Spratling quickly integrated himself into the Mexican art scene and became a friend and a strong proponent of the work of muralist Diego Rivera, for whom he organized an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Using money received from commissions he organized for Rivera, Spratling bought a home in Taxco, Mexico in 1928, where he began work on a book, Little Mexico, about this small mountain town. Spratling was gay, but most accounts of his life mention this only indirectly if at all. Spratling amassed a large collection of Pre-Columbian figurines...

Sculptural Sterling Silver Choker Necklace by Graziella Laffi
Located in Atlanta, GA
A bespoken sterling silver chocker necklace very bold design by Graziella Laffi, Lima, Peru, circa 1970s. The chocker features six subtly hammered roundels radiating into a trio of Axe-shaped fixed pendants, with two smaller ones flanking a large central one. The shape of the axe was often found in the Pre-Columbian art. As a bronze age tool, it symbolizes power. The necklace is not chain link but cast and joined as a solid chocker with box clasp mechanism. The design radiates a sense of history with the primitive tribal geometry in form, yet the necklace appears beyond ethnic, it exuberates a confident and bold modernistic aesthetic. The drop of the necklace on the mannequin (not included) is 11". It has an approximate 16" circumference and weighs 320 grams (10.3 troy ounces). It was tested as 900 purity with XRF analyzer. There is a Peruvian Cultural Ministry label applied and a catalog sticker on verso as shown. Graziella Laffi was born in 1923 in Florence, Italy to Gino Laffi, a silversmith and artist. Following her family tradition, Graziella enrolled in master classes after elementary school, focusing on design and painting. She next attended Escuela de Bellas Artes de Puerta Romana for three years, where Gino taught, and then to the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, where she concentrated in architecture until the start of World War II. In 1947, Graziella, then twenty-four, immigrated with her parents to Peru. Gino later created a silversmith studio and showroom called Fabrica Laffi on Avenue Mexico, where Graziella initially learned her Craft. The Pre-Columbian culture in her adopted country inspired Graziella to travel and collect, which ultimately influence her design in the silver pieces. Graziella learned the metalworking techniques of the ancient Peruvian civilizations and rejected the current technology. She mostly used hammering, rolling and creating joints as the ancients do. As an ambassador of Peruvian culture, her work promoted the indigenous Peruvian art and rekindled the interest in its ancient heritage throughout South America, the United States and Europe. She exhibited her growing collection of Peruvian artifacts...

Hector Aguilar Copper Brass Scroll Candelabra, Taxco Mexico, Early 1940
Located in Buffalo, NY
Wonderful matched pair, This is one of the most iconic items created by Hector Aguilar in his Taller Borda in the early 1940s. It is featured in Silver Masters of Mexico by Penny Morrill on page 120. She describes the candelabra thusly: “The eye follows the tumbling spirals as though they were lines in relief. Balance and movement coexist as the spirals push upward toward the light of the candles”. What a well-crafted description of this beauty! Made primarily of copper with brass accents, the candelabra's are signed on the base with a conjoined HA on a recessed circle, i It measures 10 ¼ inches long, 6 ½ inches tall, and 2 ¼ inches wide. I have left this stunner unpolished, as many people prefer to retain the rich decades-old patina. – exceptionally rare and hard to find – a work of art by one of the mid century metal Masters...

Vintage Sculptural Silver Necklace by Graziella Laffi
Located in Atlanta, GA
A bespoken sterling silver necklace with five roundel bell shape of gradual sizes linked by joint chains, designed and made by Graziella Laffi, Lima, Peru, circa 1965. The subtly hammered roundels evoke a sense of history with the form found in pre-Columbian culture, yet the necklace appears beyond ethnic, it exuberates a confident and bold modernism. The necklace with Peruvian Cultural Ministry label to verso.
