Presented is an original Benjamin Harrison presidential peace medal. This bronze medal was originally struck by the U.S. Mint in 1889 as a peace offering to the various Native American tribes in the U.S. The obverse of the medal has a raised relief side profile bust of President Harrison, with the text "Benjamin Harrison President U.S.A. 1889". The reverse of the medal has the word "PEACE" at top, with a scene of a settler and Native American talking in front of a log cabin. Below, a crossed tomahawk and peace pipe are enclosed by a wreath of laurel leaves. The medal is displayed on a blue velvet presentation collar with gold striped edging and light purple fabric on the reverse. The medal is attached under a blue fabric covered button. Following the British and French practice of handing out silver medals to tribal chiefs, George Washington began a policy of presenting peace medals to American Indian leaders at treaty signings and other formal ceremonies. A very fine French 19th century brown and parcel-gilt patinated bronze sculpture titled "La Sécurité" (The Security - Protection) after a model by Eugène Delaplanche (French, 1836–1891). Depicting a sitting young Maiden in a gilt-decorated armored suit and helmet, a lion skin on her back, holding a resting child on her arm. Raised on Rouge-Royal marble plinth inscribed "La Sécurité - Par E. Delaplanche - Salon des Beaux-Arts de Paris". Signed: E. Delaplanche and stamped with the importer's seal - Alberto Vignes y Ca - Buenos Aires, circa 1890. Measures: Height: 28 3/4 inches (60.3 cm). Width: 16 inches (40.7 cm). Depth: 14 inches (35.6 cm). Eugène Delaplanche (February 28, 1836 – January 10, 1891) was a French sculptor, born at Belleville (Seine). He was a pupil of Duret, gained the Prix de Rome in 1864 (spending 1864-67 at the Villa Medici in Rome) and the medal of honor in 1878. His "Messenger of Love" (1874), "Aurora" (1878), and the "Virgin of the Lillies" (1884), are in the Luxembourg. Other works by him are "Music - La Musique" (1878, Paris Opera House), called his masterpiece; "Eve After the Fall" (1869); "Maternal Instruction" (1875, Square of Sainte-Clothilde, Paris). He is also noted for his decorations in relief on vases of Haviland faience. His best work is naturalistic, but at the same time dignified and simple in line and shows sound mastery of technique. A large striking bronze bust sculpture of a man with the likeness of Will Rogers. This piece was created by Leonard McMurry, also known as Oklahoma’s “Michelangelo”. It stands on a green marbled stone square base. The sculpture depicts a man, with an extreme likeness to Will Rogers. The man has combed hair, which is parted to one side. The sculpted bronze bust has a fabulous patina, and the square green stone it is affixed to is marbled with fantastic greens, blacks, and creams. About the Artist: Leonard McMurry, (1913–2008) - McMurry is best known for his bronzes, which are primarily figurative, in many venues, from Oklahoma City to St. Louis to New York City. In 1941 his work received Honorable Mention in the Prix de Rome competition. In 1952 his work was included in the National Sculpture Society show in New York. Among his works in Oklahoma are The 89er, at the Oklahoma City Civic Center, The Legend of the Great Westerner (informally called "Buffalo Bill") at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, and Healing Hands, at the City of Faith Hospital/Oral Roberts University in Tulsa. (which at the time was the largest casting in the world.) For the 1982 Diamond Jubilee of Oklahoma statehood, McMurry completed a series of twenty-one busts of Oklahoma's governors. He also created fourteen busts for the National Hall of Fame for American Indians in Anadarko. Leonard McMurry died in 2008. Created with the traditional technique of the lost-wax (à la cire perdue) which allows for great precision and finesse in the details, this vintage bronze statue depicts a praying Buddhist monk sitting on a base, preciously holding an offering bowl. Having placed the bowl on his left hand, the monk is protecting the content with his right one. He is peacefully looking upwards, in a prayerful attitude. He is dressed with a thin robe uncovering his right shoulder, the fabric falling delicately on his left side. He is sitting on a base in a single lotus position. The bowl comes off as shown on image 9. The back is decorated as well, with less details than the front. With its nice depiction and dark patina, this vintage bronze praying Buddhist monk statue...

This sculpture is provocative and gorgeous. When we acquired this piece, we were told it was called "Study on a Female Body" and that it had been in the gentleman's office since he first opened in the 1970's. The sculpture is anatomically correct and features a female torso arching back and has large pieces of attached brutalist bronze pieces that protrude almost evocative of wings to create some sort of angelic aspect to the piece. It's both brutal / crude, but so elegantly executed and really is just a stunning piece. From the naval to the articulated spine, the attention to detail was masterfully executed on this sculpture. The sculpture sits upon a steel rod, which is mounted to a stone block. The piece is signed illegibly on the stone. A wonderful piece that would really look great in any type of modern environment. Would be great as an entryway sculpture...
