Tenerani Statuary Marble Bust of a Young Augustus Caesar
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
A finely carved statuary white marble bust of a young Augustus Caesar attributed to the workshops of 19th century Italian sculptor Pietro Tenerani (1789-1869). Also known as Young Octavian, this bust of a young Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar is after a sculpture found in the Pio Clementino Museums of the Vatican. Carved with exceptional detail, the bust is elevated on a turned socle and bears the name ‘TENERANI’ to the front. Other busts like this one after the Vatican original of the former Emperor Augustus were sculpted in the Mid-18th Century. Pietro Tenerani (1789-1869) was a notable Italian sculptor of the early 19th century. In his early career, he trained under Italian sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini, before moving to Rome where he won a scholarship as a pupil of Danish sculptor, Bertel Thorvalsden. Having honed his skills, Tenerani worked from a studio of his own in later years. William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire, Queen Victoria and Pope Pius IX...

**Mid-Century Italian Marble Bust of Julius Caesar – 1950s Classical Sculpture** This exceptional **marble bust of Julius Caesar**, handcrafted in **Italy circa 1950**, captures the enduring majesty and power of Rome’s most legendary leader. It stands as a timeless decorative statement for a **library, study, or grand entryway**, evoking the grandeur of ancient Rome. Dimensions in cm: Height 53 x Width 33 x Depth 23 Dimensions in inches: Height 20.9 x Width 13.0 x Depth 9.1 Louis Auguste Moreau, 1855-1919, was a French sculptor best known for his bronze-cast figurines. His allegorical Art Nouveau works often depicted women, children, cherubs, and historical figures adorned with floral motifs and ornaments, and were influential to other artists working at the time. Born in Dijon, France in 1855 to a celebrated family of sculptors, including his father Auguste Moreau, he went on to regularly exhibit his work at the Paris Salon from 1861 on. The artist died in 1919 in France. Carrara marble - is a type of white or blue-grey marble popular for use in sculpture and building decor. It is quarried at the city of Carrara in the province of Massa-Carrara (Tuscany, Italy). Carrara marble has been used since the time of Ancient Rome; the Pantheon and Trajan's Column in Rome are constructed of it. Many sculptures of the Renaissance, such as Michelangelo's David, were carved from Carrara marble. For Michelangelo at least, Carrara marble was valued above all other stone, except perhaps that of his own quarry in Pietrasanta. The Marble Arch in London and the Duomo di Siena are also made from this stone, as are the interiors of Manila Cathedral, the cold-white marbles of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque and the campus of Harvard Medical...

Art Deco Neapolitan 'Scugnizzo' Bust by De Martino, Gilt and Burnished Bronze
By Neapolitan Craftsman
Located in Vigonza, Padua
Neapolitan "Scugnizzo" bust, Street boy, in gilt and burnished bronze, circa 1920 by Giovanni De Martino . Sculpture in gilded bronze and dark patina on a square base in light gray marble. The realistic trait typical of the author is striking. Signature of the artist De Martino on the back Giovanni De Martino (Naples, 13 January 1870 - Naples, 3 March 1935) was an Italian sculptor active in Paris. Important Bronze sculpture depicting a boy's head in Naples called "Scugnizzo" Excellent quality and sublime workmanship, note the delicacy and expressiveness. The sculpture is signed DE MARTINO on the back. GIOVANNI DE MARTINO (Naples 1870-1935) very important sculptor known for the production of sculptures of small bronze busts, in particular street urchins, fishermen, common people, with realistic features. Excellent quality, as seen in the detail photos. Excellent workmanship. A truly beautiful sculpture! BIOGRAPHY OF THE ARTIST Giovanni de Martino (1870-1935) trained in Naples at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. He moved to Paris where he performed small sculptural groups and frequently exhibited at the "Paris Salon", winning the Louvre Museum prize for the bronze work Le Pêcheur de criquets (The Locust Fisherman). Returning to Naples, he returned to a socialist realism and on dedication to the production of sculptures depicting characteristic Neapolitan types, in rascal species, "scugnizzi", children and young fishermen. The dominant theme of his production is childhood: in particular he represents in his works pensive, sad, skinny children, on whose faces the signs of abandonment and suffering emerge (for this reason De Martino becomes known with the nickname of "The sculptor of children...

Large Antique Hand Carved Sandstone Sculpture, Bust of Christ with Display Stand
Located in Lisse, NL
Top quality and mint condition bust sculpture from the early 1900s with maker's name. This incredibly well carved bust of Jesus is impressive both for its quality and its large size. With His head bowed down like in His final hours on the cross this design is obviously perfect for displaying on a tall stand. In this case a tall and ebonized wooden pedestal was used and thanks to the contrasting colors of this bust and its pedestal they are like a match made in heaven. The master sculptor / artist could not have done a better job in hand carving the exhausted yet serene facial expression of Christ. The large size of this bust combined with the rare sandstone material makes this work of religious art look extra ancient. Because of its size this archetype of Christianity can also be seen and worshipped from further away. Unfortunately we cannot read the name of the skilled artisan who signed this unique sculpture. Thanks to its amazing quality, its excellent condition, its deeper meaning and its powerful presence this work of religious art will never fail to impress, no matter where you decide to have it on display. For it to have come our way felt like a blessing and to be able to offer it to the 1stdibs community in this amazing condition is an honour for us. Our fair price for this museum worthy sculpture again includes perfect packing and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days. Total height x width x depth: 74 x 17 x 16.5 inches. Christ bust...
