Antonin Mercie(1845-1916) Mercié entered the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, and studied under Alexandre Falguière and François Jouffroy, and in 1868 gained the Grand Prix de Rome at the age of 23. Created for Bunraku theatre, this Bunraku, known in Japan as a Ningyo Jorurui, depicts a samurai warrior. He is dressed in full kamishimo, with a kataginu and hakama of rich brocade featuring gold thread on a coral ground. A pair of removable swords sit at his waist.
