Magnificent and large ormolu and hardstone mounted ebonized wooden casket English, 19th Century Height 41cm, width 72cm, depth 52cm Exceptionally fine and richly adorned, this beautiful piece is a large, ebonized wooden casket or coffer, mounted with extensive ormolu decorations, and inlaid on front and back with Florentine pietra dura hardstone panels. It was made in English in the early 19th century during the regency period, using a host of stylistic influences, and amalgamating various outstanding decorative techniques. The front and reverse are set with hardstone panels, depicting flowers, fruits and insects in the corners. It is attributed to Robert Hume Jr., of Hume & Son, leading English makers of the Regency period, engaged for a time as interior designers for the wealthy 10th Duke of...

An extremely rare pair of Regency cast-iron sarcophagus shaped strong boxes. Regency, circa 1820 Painted to simulate palisander wood and with parcel-gilt, the cavetto-moulded hinged lids cast with flower sprays above foliate-cast bands over front panels relieved with river gods within canted corners cast with standing muses, the sides with lion mask and ring handles over leafy aprons on massive lion’s paw feet; the Brahmah type lock stamped “T. Davis from London” and impressed with the Royal Crown. These extraordinary pieces are modelled on Regency wine coolers. The forms are classic Greco-Roman revival with the boat-hook handles, mythic figures and the overall sarcophagus pattern. You would struggle to find one let alone a pair. Good items for any collection. Research on going into these strong boxes but we have found possible information on the lock stamped Davis….(historyoflocks ) The relationship of King George III and George Davis of Windsor, who was locksmith in ordinary to His Majesty. Davis, in 1799, invented and patented a unique style of lock, which was also beautifully engraved with a warning not to make duplicate keys. British 1810-1820 Clobbered wares deserve better as they are historically very interesting. So lets call them George the IV or Regency Taste redecorated porcelain. And leave the clobbered behind us as it does no justice to what they are at all. Its not that because we live in a time were these super funky colours are out of taste that we should hate on these pieces. A short history! During the early 19th century, the Prince Regent (later King George IV) played a key role in cultivating a taste for the exotic Orient among the British elite, influencing interior design during the Regency era. His lavish projects, such as the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, epitomized this fascination. The Pavilion, with its blend of Indian, Chinese, and Gothic elements, became a symbol of the Prince’s extravagant taste. The interiors featured Chinese wallpaper, Indian textiles, and oriental furniture, reflecting the era’s growing interest in Chinoiserie and other oriental-inspired designs. This trend extended to the decorative arts, where clobbered Chinese porcelain—originally blue-and-white pieces—was reimagined with bright reds, golds, greens, and dragons to cater to the new European tastes. These colorful repainted pieces symbolized wealth, sophistication, and an affinity for the exotic, perfectly complementing the bold and opulent interiors of the time. The dragon, a powerful symbol in Chinese culture, was a recurring motif in these porcelain pieces, further aligning with the Regency’s romanticized view of the Orient.
