Sterling Silver, Rock Crystal Combination Vinaigrette/Thread Spool Holder

By Thomas Johnson, London 1

Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne

An exceptional, fine and impressive, antique Victorian English sterling silver and rock crystal combination vinaigrette/thread spool holder in the form of a carriage lamp; an addition to our diverse collectible silverware collection. This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver combination vinaigrette / thread holder has been realistically modeled in the form of a carriage lamp. The body of the vessel is embellished with impressive chased scrolling leaf decoration, accented with plain silver borders. The anterior surface of the antique silver holder bears a feature bezel set cabochon cut rock crystal panel, displaying the initials MAUD; this protruding panel replicates the location of the lamp's light. The posterior of the vessel features an impressive hallmarked plain belt loop/hook fastening. The piece retains the original domed hinged cover ornamented with tiered panels embellished with further scrolling leaf decoration. The cover is surmounted with a plain ring loop attachment and opens to reveal the original thread spool. The underside of the lamp is fitted with a hallmarked hinged cover, which opens to reveal the vinaigrette with the original push fit grille and gilding. The grille is ornamented with an engraved and pierced decorated floral rosette design. The interior of the antique vinaigrette cover bears a Victorian lozenge mark which certifies the patent of the design on 8th September 1869 with the UK Patent Office. Condition This antique thread spool...

19th Century Carved Oak Study of St. Paul the Apostle, English, circa 1860
19th Century Carved Oak Study of St. Paul the Apostle, English, circa 1860

19th Century Carved Oak Study of St. Paul the Apostle, English, circa 1860

Located in Central England, GB

This remarkable and very finely carved study of the biblical figure of St Paul, The Apostle who was originally Saul of Tarsus born BCE. Tarsus in Cilicia (now in Turkey). He died circa 62 – 64 CE in Rome, Italy. He was one of the leaders of the first generation Christians and was often considered to be the most important person after Jesus in the history of Christianity. This highly accomplished wood carving is a difficult material for detailing English oak. It shows him standing barefoot and dressed in simple robes with a sword in one hand and a scroll in the other. His face has been well captured with a good expression, detailed hair and a long beard. The small scale of this figure would indicate it was not originally church decoration...

Bust of Doulton Chairman Lewis John Eric Hooper by John Broad
Bust of Doulton Chairman Lewis John Eric Hooper by John Broad

Bust of Doulton Chairman Lewis John Eric Hooper by John Broad

Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire

Dated 1904, this stoneware bust was made by late 19th century Doulton sculptor John Broad. It depicts Lewis John Eric Hooper, descendant of John Doulton who was founder of the famous Doulton & Co. of Lambeth, London. A barrister at the time, Hooper became Managing Director of the ceramics company from 1919 and subsequently Chairman from 1925. Here he is depicted in his barrister dress by the talented hand of Broad, giving us a glimpse into the character of Hooper as well as Broad’s artistic talent for statuary. The bust is in good condition, made in stoneware and sits on a wooden plinth detailed with plaque. This bust is likely a one-off commission. Broad was one of the most prominent artists of Doulton & Co. during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Specialising in large works, he had a talent for producing vases, statuary and portrait medallions. This stone bust of Lewis John Eric Hooper...
