Beautiful oil on canvas by Marius Hubert-Robert entitled "In the sun the small farmhouse" representing a Provencal landscape with two characters on a path at the foot of a farmhouse (typical house of Provence), Marius Hubert-Robert (Paris 1885 - Nice 1966) is an orientalist painter and illustrator. He exhibited notably at the Salon des indépendants in 1929, at the Artistes Français, at the Société Nouvelle des Beaux Arts, at the Salon d'Hiver. Painter in the 10th Army during the 1914-18 war, Marius Hubert Robert gave 2 of his wartime works to the Musée du Luxembourg. This model was produced by both ALP (Lidköpings Porslinsfabrik) in Sweden and Arabia in Finland, which at this time belonged to the same group of companies. Great condition. Stamped 'MODELL TYRA LUNDGREN', 'MADE IN SWEDEN' and makers mark. Tyra Lundgren (1897-1979) was one of the most multifaceted artists and modernists of the twentieth century. She was a painter, drawer, sculptor, ceramist, glass- and textile designer, as well as an author and an art critic. She was the first woman who designed glass for Paolo Venini at Murano in Venice and she also served as the artistic leader at Arabia in Helsinki at a time when men tended to hold those kinds of positions. Tyra Lundgren grew up in Djursholm, near Stockholm. Her parents were John Petter Lundgren, professor at Veterinärinstitutet (institute of veterinary sciences) in Stockholm, and Edith Lundgren née Åberg, who was a housewife and raised their six children. The bourgeois home also comprised a nanny and a female cook. The family were very socially active, travelled often, and enjoyed the outdoor lifestyle. Wonderful to find a top-notch, highly decorative and most unusual desk set, French in origin dating to around 1860. Made from nutty coloured burl Walnut, all three pieces are mounted with the most wonderful polished brass mounts all inset with fabulous hand painted porcelain plaques. Our restorer had to remove all the mounts to professionally clean and on doing so found the name of the figure depicted on the plaques, "Ninon De Lenclos" a French Author, Courtesan, Freethinker and Patron of the Arts. The set is made up of a Stationery box with brass swing handles each side; the box complete with a working tasselled key. The box opens to reveal the wonderful original gilded leather lining with the original paper lining the sides of the dividers. The lock and hinges are beautifully engraved, a true sign of quality.
