Chinoiserie Serveware, Ceramics, Silver and Glass

CHINOISERIE STYLE

Emerging in the 17th century, chinoiserie appropriated the aesthetics and imagery of popular East Asian design for European-made versions. Reflecting the exoticization of China, Japan and other countries in this era, the word directly translates from French to “Chinese-esque,” which reveals its shortcomings as a style of furniture and decor that often stereotypically and reductively mimics Asian culture rather than showcasing and paying tribute to its artistic traditions.

The enthusiastically decorative chinoiserie style was propelled by influential tastemakers including French King Louis XIV, whose Trianon de Porcelaine in 1670 was inspired by Chinese architecture. Expanded trade between the East and West led to a demand for porcelain, lacquer objects, silk and other goods, which further informed the fanciful furniture being crafted in Europe.

Artisans working in the chinoiserie style used materials and elements like pagoda shapes, bamboo, lacquer surfaces, bird and flower motifs and other interpretations of Asian design on pieces that were frequently set against vibrant wallcoverings. This whimsical approach yielded chinoiserie furniture that boasted dramatic flourishes drawing on the natural world and reflected the dominance of Rococo during the 18th century.

As chinoiserie was shaped by approximations of Asian design by European creators, it had regional variations, such as Chinese Chippendale in England where cabinets, chairs and tea tables had wooden fretwork designs and “japanned” surfaces intended to resemble lacquer work that was created in East Asia. In North America, furniture makers in Boston and New York integrated chinoiserie-painted scenes into Queen Anne furniture.

Antique chinoiserie furniture has continued to be fashionable, from its popularity with decorators of the Hollywood Regency era — James Mont, Tommi Parzinger, William Haines and Samuel Marx favored the style — to contemporary interior designers, although it brings with it a complex history.

Richard Ginori Galli Rossi Roosters Porcelain Dinner Service, 86 pieces, 1960s
Located in Firenze, IT
Exceptional 86-piece Richard Ginori “Galli Rossi” porcelain dinner service, handcrafted in Florence, 1960s, in immaculate and complete condition. This is a rare 86-piece porcelain complete dinner service by Richard Ginori, handcrafted at the historic Doccia Manufactory in Florence between the 1960s and 1970s. The celebrated “Galli Rossi” pattern, one of the most iconic in Ginori’s repertoire, features stylised red roosters and floral motifs in warm Siena tones, delicately hand-finished with 24k gold trim and accents. Each piece, made of fine hard-paste porcelain with a scalloped, embossed edge that catches the light beautifully, exemplifies the refinement and excellence of mid-century Italian craftsmanship. This extensive and iconic vintage fine porcelain tableware set is complete and perfectly preserved. An extraordinary rarity, this porcelain dinner service is almost impossible to find today in such a comprehensive and immaculate condition. Our set includes: 24 dinner plates, 12 soup plates, 12 dessert or fruit plates, 12 coffee cups with 12 saucers, one coffee pot, one sugar bowl, one milk jug, three oval serving platters, one round serving platter, one salad bowl, one soup tureen, two serving dishes, two cake stands, and one sauce boat. Every piece bears the “Richard Ginori - Manifattura di Doccia Florence Italy” backstamp, dating the service between 1965 and 1975, when Ginori successfully merged Tuscan decorative tradition with contemporary international taste. The ‘Galli Rossi’ motif, first introduced in 1747, draws inspiration from Eastern aesthetics, chinoiserie and the 18th-century European fascination with the exotic. Its stylised roosters, delicate foliage, and refined palette reflect the cross-cultural influences that shaped Italian decorative arts of the period. Depicting two roosters in a dynamic stance among stylised rocks and foliage, itts rich red and gold palette, combined with the sculptural basketweave texture, makes this set a true collector’s treasure. This complete set is in perfect condition and has never been used, making it an exceptional find for collectors and connoisseurs of Italian porcelain Discontinued in the 1980s, it remains highly sought after by connoisseurs and interior designers alike. Beyond the dining table, the “Galli Rossi” pieces make a striking decorative statement. Displayed in a glass-fronted cabinet, on open shelving, or styled as wall art, their warm Siena tones and gold accents bring a touch of Florentine grandeur to any interior. Designers often pair them with antique linens, Murano glassware, or dark wood furniture to create a layered, timeless look that celebrates Italian heritage. Perfect for elegant festive tables, refined dinner parties, or as a luxurious wedding or holiday gift, this Richard Ginori dinner service brings Italian heritage and sophistication to any setting. In excellent condition. A rare opportunity to acquire a complete service in excellent condition, perfect for collectors or as a centerpiece in a refined dining room. The sale price includes professional wooden-crate packaging for secure international shipping. Rare Meissen Marcolini Porcelain Chinoiserie Incense Burner Vase and Cover
Located in Queens, NY
A rare Meissen Marcolini Porcelain Chinoiserie incense burner vase and cover, made for the Chinese market, circa 1800, blue cross swords and star mark, Pressnummer 58 A Museum Quality Piece. Painted in the sought after famille rose palette with sprigs of indianische Blumen and enriched in gilding, the simulated pierced body supported by four feet painted with stylized dragons, the pierced cover with a Buddhist lion finial. 10" high x 6" wide x 6" deep The shape of this piece, which appears to be unrecorded in the literature, is inspired by similar Chinese porcelain censers from the Qing Dynasty, Kangxi Period (1654-1722). An example in the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated by Li Yi-hua in Qing Porcelain of Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong Periods from the Palace Museum Collection, Hong Kong, 1989, pl. 65. Another in the British Museum, London (museum no. PDF, A.812) is catalogued as a perfume-holder. These porcelain examples are in turn inspired by ancient Chinese bronzes from both the Shang (1600-1046 BC) and the Zhou (1046-246 BCE) dynasties, an example of which was sold anonymously by Christie's New York, 22 March 2019, lot 1601. This chain of inspiration tracking backwards from the 19th century to antiquity provides a clear example of how ceramics, and indeed other mediums, are able to influence and motivate the works of later generations. For a Meissen porcelain snuff...
