This Chiavarina model stands out for its rational and linear design, elaborated trough a process intended to simplify forms reducing the use of materials. The result is a modern and agile chair which evolves the concept of the classic ''chiavarina'' chair nevertheless maintaining its original construction process.
Made of beech painted in a cherrywood essence, this model has a frame which weight just 1,700 kg (for a total of 2,1 kg with its drawn guinea cane seat).
Chiavari chairs (Chiavarine) have a 200 years long history and since the beginning of their production they have evolved in several models being always recognisable for a distinctive frame structure which allow them to be one of the lightest chair in the world without compromising their sturdiness and stability.
Between the 1930 and 1960s they have been one of the first choice of some of the most renowned Italian architects and interior designers when they had to select a dining chair able to fit their refined taste. Cane — the material of the moment that is inspiring a new generation of designers — has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, side tables and desks.
In case you’re wondering, cane refers to the peeled-off bark of rattan, an Old World species of climbing palm, while wicker may be used to describe natural or synthetic materials that were woven into a pattern. Raffia, another term thrown around when discussing woven furniture, refers to a palm tree native to tropical regions in Africa.
Of course, designers’ obsession with traditional artisanal techniques is nothing new.
