It was purchased by a Private Dallas Collector at Sotheby’s New York Auction on 20th September 2005. Sale No: 8111 Lot No. 223.
Sotheby’s operate a twice yearly auction of Southeast Asian Art & Antiquities in New York in the months of March and September.
This sale was titled “Indian and Southeast Asian Art”.
The Lot is described as: “C.J. Anthony Doss (b. 1933) THE TEMPTATION. Signed and dated ‘C J A Doss/57’ lower right.
Oil on canvas laid on board.
27.5 by 20.5 in (69.9 by 52 cm.)
The Provenance is given as: “Property from the Collection of Mr. Artur Isenberg”.
The painting carried an Auction estimate of USD 2,000 to USD 4,000.
Allowing for inflation alone this would be over $6,000 in today’s value.
As an added bonus and proof of authenticity the painting still retains it’s original Sotheby’s Lot No. Label.
It has substantially increased in value over the years as a HIGHLY DESIRABLE piece from an exhibited and highly collected Modern Indian Master painter.
C.J. Anthony Doss is a very highly regarded and widely exhibited, Indian painter. He was born in 1933 and died in 2008.
DAG Modern in Mumbai featured Doss’s work.

A beautiful oil on canvas rendering of a stag hunt, presented in a fluted giltwood frame with a bundled husk border and large, parted leaves in the corners. The painting is signed in the lower right corner by the artist, “H. de Forges”, a member of the Barbizon French school of the late 1800s, who specialized in animal hunt scenes.
The vibrancy of de Forges’ painting has not diminished over time; the colors seem to pop right off the canvas. A blue sky with some low-lying white clouds hangs above trees mainly bereft of leaves, indicating it is late autumn. Slender grass, ranging from green to brown, surrounds a watering hole in the middle of a clearing, with a single stag near the water’s edge. Eight white hunting dogs with black and tan markings surround the deer on one side of the pond. Behind the pack is a brown horse ridden by a huntsman dressed in red and black, preparing to sound the hunting horn. Two more riders in red, black, and white, also on brown horses, are emerging from a small hill behind the deer.
Hunting, always a very important pastime in France, became one of the more popular genres in 19th century art, along with with quality pastoral and landscape paintings. Realism was a defining feature of the Barbizon School, as artists were attracted to spending more time living and painting in the natural world. This 19th century impressionist painting was crafted in France, circa 1890. Set in a carved giltwood frame, the artwork painted on canvas, illustrates a picturesque, countryside landscape scene with people, chickens, a village and its road in the foreground. The oil on canvas is signed on the back in the lower left corner, Eugene Galien-Laloue (see last picture). There is also a printed version of the artist name in the top left corner, printed Galien-Laloue (see second to last picture). The artwork is in excellent condition with rich, sensational colors; it would make a lovely addition to a library, den, or living room. Canvas relined.

Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854-1941) was a French artist of French-Italian parents. He was a popularizer of landscape and street scenes, usually those illustrating autumn or winter settings. His paintings of the early 1900s accurately represent the era in which he lived: a happy, bustling Paris during la Belle Époque. His paintings regularly include horse-drawn carriages, trolley cars and its first omnibuses. Galien-Laloue's works are valued not only for their contribution to 20th century art, but for the actual historical content which they document. His work can be seen at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Louvier, Musée des Beaux-Arts, La Rochelle, Mulhouse, France.

Here we have a very rare opportunity, a large set of five Otto Zapf 1967 'sofalette' modular seating elements and a very rare 'Sofalette' corner table in fibreglass
Newly upholstered in 100% cotton Canvas by Romo and comes complete with the original and usually missing loose cushions.
The high quality thick fibreglass bases are all in good vintage condition produced by the Zapf workshop around circa 1970
The 'sofalette' system is completely modular in that you can rearrange the 5 seating elements and corner table piece into any possible configuration and combination but also to a pair of lounge chairs and a 3 seat sofa
The super elegant and minimal sculptural form is fully complemented by the new Canvas fabric, a sculptural form presents itself
