Mid Century Modern Still Life with Jug and Vase by Ramon Prats (1928-2003)
By Giorgio Morandi, Ramon Prats
Located in New Windsor, NY
Ramon Prats (1928-2003) vase and jug still life oil paint on masonite. Circa 1971. Signed and dated lower right, Prats, '71. A peaceful rendering and reminiscent of Morandi's solitary still life paintings. Prats' stippling effect with the brush or palette knife has created a beautifully tactile and textured painting. Light and dark contrast of the violet cylinder next to the curvaceous jug. A wonderful piece. the framing treatment consists of a simple flat black wood profile molding. The piece is in good overall condition with minor losses around the corners and edges of the work. No other major paint losses. No visible crazing, water damage or restorations. Some scuffs, dings and losses to the black frame. Wear consistent with age. Approximate overall dimensions with frame are 1.5" deep x 16" wide x 24.75" high. The approximate measurements of the actual work on masonite are 15.63" wide x 24.25" high. Bio from AskArt: Ramon Prats Born: 1928 - Spain Died: 2003 - Mexico Known for: Abstract mixed-media explosion theme, still life paintings Biography from Waddington's Spanish-born Ramón Prats was appointed as the official artist and illustrator for "El País" newspaper in Havana, Cuba when he was 15 years old. After his studies in Cuba, Prats moved to New York where he studied at the Art Students League of New York. He regularly exhibited at the Associated American Artists (AAA) Gallery until 1955 and also at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Prats moved to Mexico in 1956 and was pivotal in spearheading the development of modern art there until his death at age 74. Biography from Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum Ramon Prats (American, b. Spain, 1928-2003) developed his talent for painting while he was a child. At age 15, he was appointed the official artist and illustrator for El País newspaper in Havana, Cuba, where his family lived at the time. He studied at the School of Visual Arts in Santo Domingo and at the School of Graphic Arts in Havana, Cuba. Upon completing his studies in Cuba, Prats moved to New York, where he studied at the Art Students League* of New York. The Associated American Artists* (AAA) soon commissioned him under an exclusive seven-year contract. He regularly exhibited at the AAA gallery until 1955, and also showed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1952, he assisted painter Jose Vela Zanetti...

Sumptuous Large Original William Foster Still Life Painting of a Banquet Table
Located in Tustin, CA
Sumptuous, very large, original oil on canvas board, still life painting depicting a banquet table. This painting is a virtuoso display of how artist William Frederick Foster (1883-1953) captures texture in paint. You can see this in the mouth watering fruit, crustacea and other samplings laid upon the table as well as the masterfully painted reflective surfaces of the copper tea pot, wine bottle and the gathered table cloth. Painting is framed in the original wood frame. Painting framed measures 34.5” high x 46” wide x 1.5” deep. Painting unframed measures 30.5” high x 42.5” wide. William Foster was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1883. He became a noted figure painter and illustrator, living the last twenty-one years of his career in Los Angeles, California. At age 12, he moved with his family to Colorado, but in 1898, he returned to Cincinnati and enrolled at the Art Academy where he studied with Joseph Henry Sharp and Frank Duveneck. His early ambition was to be a violinist, but he was re-focused on fine art when he saw a painting by Albert Ceck Wenzell. In 1902, he went to New York City where he painted scenery for theaters, auditoriums, and large department stores. He also studied at the New York School with Robert Henri and William Merritt Chase, and from 1903 to 1931, he worked as an illustrator and with a brief teaching stint in 1919 at the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1903, he sold his first illustration, a depiction of high society, to Life magazine, and the style was very similar to Wenzell. From that time, he worked for most of the major magazines including Collier's, The Saturday Evening Post and Harper's Monthly. In 1926, he won the National Academy of Design's Thomas B. Clarke Prize for the best figure composition painted in the United States by a non-academician. The following year, he was voted an Associate Member based on his recognition for a figure work titled The Girl in Brown. During World War I, he operated his own ambulance in France as a member of the American Volunteer Motor Ambulance Corps and also received mention as a camoufleur artist. Returning to the U.S., he resumed his illustration work and moved to Chicago, where he taught at the Art Institute. Foster moved to Los Angeles in 1932 and devoted his energy to painting, exhibiting and teaching. He taught at the Chouinard School of Art in Los Angeles and gave private classes in his studio. He also worked on a mural project at the Hearst estate...

Antique Framed Hudson River School, River Landscape with Figures in a Sailboat
By James McDougal Hart
Located in Morristown, NJ
Oil on canvas board, unsigned. A charming small-scale landscape in the manner of the Hudson River School, depicting a tranquil river scene with figures in a sailboat drifting past a wooded shoreline. A golden light washes the surrounding trees and distant mountain ridges, while a finely painted group of figures in bright dress suggests narrative intimacy amid the grandeur of nature. Housed in an ornate, period-style gilt frame with grapevine and foliate detailing. Dimensions: Sight: 5.75" H x 3.75" W Frame: 11.75" H x 9.75" W Condition: Good overall. Minor surface discoloration and edge abrasions consistent with age. Not examined outside of frame. The frame could benefit from being tightened up. Provenance: A Private Collection: 1175 York Avenue, New York City Reverse bears an original label for Fisher & Adler & Co., 48 Fulton Street, New York – importers, publishers, and dealers in engravings and chromolithographs, active ca. 1870–1900. Label Note – Fisher, Adler & Co., New York: The reverse of the frame bears a printed label for Fisher, Adler & Co., a New York firm active in the late 19th century, located at 48 Fulton Street in lower Manhattan. The company described itself as "Importers & Publishers of Engravings, Chromos, Photographs, Etchings, Autotypes, and Photogravures," and catered to a growing market of middle- and upper-class collectors interested in European and American fine art reproductions and original paintings. While Fisher, Adler & Co. were known primarily as print and picture dealers, their stock often included small original paintings...

Carl Koch Techbuilt Spacemaking Furniture
Located in New York, NY
Unit furniture of Philippine mahogany with white Masonite panels consisting of a module with sliding Masonite doors and a double wide module with an open front. Designed by Harvard-educated, Boston-area architect, designer, and urban planner Carl Koch as a corollary to his prefabricated Techbuilt houses and produced in 1955. Koch was a pioneering champion of prefabrication in housing in mid-century America, first with his much-publicized but ill-fated all-steel Lustron houses in the late 1930’s, then with his more successful wooden Tech-Built houses, introduced in 1953. In At Home with Tomorrow, his 1958 paean to prefabrication, he lays out his opposition to the traditional hammer-and-handsaw construction methods that remained dominant even with conceptually modernist structures. His designs generally hewed to a regional brand of modernism rather than orthodox international style, taking into account local topography and climate—his iconic form is an A-frame with a pitched roof, more sensible in New England winters than a flat roof (though there are such Techbuilt designs). The basic Techbuilt formula suggested that modular, industrial production methods of the components combined with knock-down shipping and on-site assembly equalled lower cost and less waste. Variety and individuality could be achieved in how the elements were combined. This underlying philosophy involving modularity, flexibility, and industrial production methods applied to Spacemaking furniture as well, although interestingly enough, the furniture design preceded the architectural application, as Koch (et al) had submitted a version to the 1947 MoMA Low-Cost Furniture Competition (and so these units also preceded the famous 1951 Eames Storage Unit, a conceptually similar idea executed with metal framing). The furniture line began with requests for freestanding wardrobe...
