Original 1902 American Playhouse Poster
Original 1902 American Playhouse Poster

Original 1902 American Playhouse Poster

By U.S. Litho Company

Located in Peekskill, NY

This was an estate find and part of a beautiful collection of rare excellent turn of the century posters. They were hidden away for over a 100 years. About the poster: You'd think that a play called 'The New Baby' might feature said child in its promotional material. But here's the thing, there really isn't a baby at the center of the comedy, and that's the crux of this entertainment. The plot concerns a husband who is so bored with country life that he dreams up the idea of having an illegitimate son in London as a way to get into town for an occasional 'night off'. When his wife decides that the child should be adopted, the expected comic tissue of falsehoods and misunderstandings frays and hilarity ensues. Adapted from German by A. Bourchier, the farce opened in London in 1896 to what a local critic termed 'much mirth'. Several years later, when the play had crossed the Atlantic and entered the repertory of David de Wolf - cleverly called the Baby's 'chaperone' on the poster - and his troupe of travelling players, that understated review was translated into the more American howling success'. The cast and director would've been totally unfamiliar with the British hinterlands, so this splendid design concentrates on the hi-jinks of the characters and their situation.' At the start of the 20th century, America was in the full glory of its cultural adolescence, bursting with energy and optimism. In 1900 in New York there were 33 legitimate Broadway theatres, and many more would be built within the next decade to meet growing audience demand. New York's exploding population was also enjoying increased mobility. In 1904, the city opened its first underground commuter railroad lines. Thanks to these 'subways,' tens of thousands living far from the theatre district could catch a Broadway show and still sleep in their own beds. Add in the ever-increasing numbers of tourists who came into the city by rail and steamship, and it was easy to see why Broadway could now support more productions and longer runs than ever before.' We believe this magnificent and awe inspiring poster typifies the best of musical history and musical posters...

Set of Four Antique Carbon Prints, Religious Art, Framed, 19th Century
Set of Four Antique Carbon Prints, Religious Art, Framed, 19th Century

Set of Four Antique Carbon Prints, Religious Art, Framed, 19th Century

Located in COLMAR, FR

These four original carbon prints have been made by the French publishing house Maison Braun & Cie. (see labels on the backs). The company was launched in 1853 in the town of Dornach, Alsace, France by Adolphe Braun (1812-1877). The company specialized in (large) reproductions of artworks and came to open offices in Paris (1868), London and New York. In 1883 the company, which had been taken over by Adolphe's son and other family members, became the official and sole photographer/publisher for the Louvre Museum in Paris and other stately owned museums in France. They also had a very impressive sale list of images from other reputed European museums and collections. The company was taken over in the 1950s and the brand ceased to exist in 1969. This set consists of four framed, original carbon prints of late middle-age religious paintings by Italian masters. These prints most likely date from late 1800s or early 1900s. The two large angels are sections from the Linaiuoli Triptych, dated 1433 and painted by the Italian artist Fra Angelico (circa 1387-1455). He is often referred to as the "painter of angels". The female saint holding a book is from the artwork "Annunciation" by the Italian painter Fra Filippo Lippi...

Strangers on a Train c1950s Japanese 2 Sheet Film Poster
Strangers on a Train c1950s Japanese 2 Sheet Film Poster

Strangers on a Train c1950s Japanese 2 Sheet Film Poster

Located in Bath, Somerset

A superb original Japanese Tatekan (2 sheet) film poster for Strangers on a Train, issued for a c1950s Japanese release of Alfred Hitchcock's celebrated thriller. The tall, narrow format gives the design real drama, with Hitchcock's portrait, a glowing railway signal and bold vertical Japanese lettering creating a tense and highly atmospheric composition. It is a wonderful alternative to the more familiar Western campaign artwork and a striking example of Japanese film poster design. Released in 1951, Strangers on a Train is one of Hitchcock's great suspense films, adapted from the novel by Patricia Highsmith...

Antique Botanical Prints Set, German Wildflower Atlas Plates, Stuttgart 1885
Antique Botanical Prints Set, German Wildflower Atlas Plates, Stuttgart 1885

Antique Botanical Prints Set, German Wildflower Atlas Plates, Stuttgart 1885

Located in Langweer, NL

Antique Botanical Prints Set, German Wildflower Atlas Plates, Stuttgart 1885 This elegant group of botanical plates originates from Naturgeschichte des Pflanzenreichs by M. Fünfstück, published in Stuttgart circa 1890. Produced during the late nineteenth century’s peak period of scientific illustration, these works beautifully combine botanical accuracy with refined decorative composition, making them highly suitable for both collectors and interior-driven presentation. The plates illustrate a wide variety of European wildflowers, medicinal plants, and garden species rendered in delicate hand-colored tones and precise naturalistic detail. Species represented include carnations and pinks (*Dianthus*), forget-me-nots (*Myosotis*), buttercups (*Ranunculus*), columbine (*Aquilegia*), monkshood (*Aconitum*), water lily (*Nymphaea*), poppy (*Papaver*), cabbage (*Brassica*), meadow herbs, flowering perennials, and numerous field and woodland plants. The compositions balance individual botanical studies with airy spacing and harmonious arrangement, allowing each specimen to read clearly while forming a cohesive visual ensemble. The restrained palette — soft sage greens, pale blues, muted yellows, and gentle rose tones — creates a calm and sophisticated aesthetic well suited to contemporary interiors. Rather than functioning merely as scientific diagrams, these plates operate as architectural decorative elements, ideal for organic modern interiors, Scandinavian spaces, country houses, wellness environments, or boutique hospitality settings. Displayed together, the prints introduce rhythm, natural structure, and historical authenticity while maintaining visual lightness. Originally produced as educational material yet executed with notable artistic sensitivity, the plates exemplify the German tradition of merging science, craftsmanship, and design. Their timeless botanical subjects and balanced compositions make them especially appealing for designers seeking authentic nineteenth-century works that integrate seamlessly into modern environments. The prints are offered unframed, allowing collectors and designers full freedom to tailor framing choices to individual interiors. Any framed examples shown serve purely as visual inspiration. Condition report: Very good antique condition with general age-related toning consistent with late nineteenth-century paper. Light surface wear and occasional minor spotting visible upon close inspection. Original centerfolds as issued. Paper remains structurally sound and displays attractively overall. Framing tips: These botanical plates benefit from generous ivory or warm off-white matting to enhance the delicate compositions and preserve visual breathing space around each specimen. Frames in dark walnut, natural oak, or subtle antique gilt create an elegant balance between historical character and contemporary refinement. Hanging as a grid or salon-style botanical arrangement produces a cohesive, designer-led wall installation with strong visual presence. Keyword block: antique botanical prints, German botanical atlas, M Fünfstück, Naturgeschichte des Pflanzenreichs, wildflower botanical prints, antique plant illustrations, European flora prints, botanical wall art set, vintage botanical plates...
