Aztec & Early Mexican Costumes, Set of 2 Antique Prints, 1500–1525 This striking pair of early 20th-century costume plates offers a vivid and historically valuable depiction of Aztec and early Mexican dress during the 16th century. Illustrated by Max Tilke and published by Ernst Wasmuth A.G. in Berlin, these prints belong to one of the most respected costume‐historical series of the period. Tilke was known for his meticulous research and his ability to translate ethnographic sources into richly detailed, accurate visual reconstructions. These two plates are among the most vibrant and desirable in the entire publication. Plate 144 presents warriors and nobles in full ceremonial and military attire. Jaguar warriors, eagle warriors, officers, and elite fighters are shown with their distinctive feathered headdresses, painted shields, quilted cotton armor (ichcahuipilli), and symbolic iconography referencing Aztec cosmology and rank. The colors and patterns reflect authentic codex sources, making the plate particularly valuable to historians of pre-Columbian culture. Plate 145 focuses on social classes and civilian dress from the late pre-Hispanic and early colonial period. Market vendors, weavers, young nobles, priests, and high-ranking women appear wearing garments such as tilmas, breechcloths, embroidered huipiles, feathered adornments, and body paint. Cornflower Botanical Study, Centaurea Cyanus, Carl Lindman, c. 1905 Description: A beautiful early 20th-century botanical chromolithograph depicting the cornflower, Centaurea cyanus L., known in Swedish as “Blåklint.” The composition is dominated by the distinctive intense blue flower of the cornflower, accompanied by unopened flower heads, slender foliage and a series of finely rendered botanical details. Numbered studies surrounding the principal specimen illustrate individual florets, reproductive structures and other anatomical components, combining considerable decorative appeal with scientific precision. Carl Axel Magnus Lindman (1856–1928) was a distinguished Swedish botanist, professor and botanical illustrator. He is particularly celebrated for “Bilder ur Nordens Flora,” his monumental illustrated survey of Scandinavian flora. The publication became one of the most recognizable botanical works produced in Scandinavia during the early 20th century. The cornflower has a long history as both a wildflower and ornamental garden plant. Its brilliant blue blossoms make this one of the particularly attractive plates from Lindman’s botanical work. These four original carbon prints have been made by the French publishing house Maison Braun & Cie. (see labels on the backs). The company was launched in 1853 in the town of Dornach, Alsace, France by Adolphe Braun (1812-1877). The company specialized in (large) reproductions of artworks and came to open offices in Paris (1868), London and New York. In 1883 the company, which had been taken over by Adolphe's son and other family members, became the official and sole photographer/publisher for the Louvre Museum in Paris and other stately owned museums in France. They also had a very impressive sale list of images from other reputed European museums and collections. The company was taken over in the 1950s and the brand ceased to exist in 1969. This set consists of four framed, original carbon prints of late middle-age religious paintings by Italian masters. These prints most likely date from late 1800s or early 1900s. The two large angels are sections from the Linaiuoli Triptych, dated 1433 and painted by the Italian artist Fra Angelico (circa 1387-1455). He is often referred to as the "painter of angels".
