An Indian wood storage trunk from circa 1900, richly decorated across the front with extensive mother-of-pearl inlay arranged in intricate geometric and radiating motifs. The chest combines a strongly utilitarian construction with remarkably detailed surface ornament, giving it the appealing character associated with Indian folk furnishings of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The rectangular chest is fitted with a hinged plank top, its projecting edge accented by a repeating band of small geometric mother-of-pearl motifs. The front is densely ornamented with hundreds of individually set triangular and diamond-shaped inlays forming borders, starbursts, circular rosettes and rhythmic geometric patterns. Faint remnants of red pigment survive around portions of the case, adding another layer to its timeworn surface. The sides remain comparatively plain and are fitted with substantial hand-forged iron carrying handles. Opening the lid reveals a simple wood interior with a raised compartment or till at one end, traditionally useful for storing smaller valuables separately from the main contents.
