Rococo Mirrors

ROCOCO STYLE

Rococo was an aesthetic movement in the fine and decorative arts in the 18th century that found its inspiration in nature and fostered an overall lightness and delicacy of form, construction and ornament in interior design. Rococo furniture, while greatly influenced by trends in Italy and Germany, is often called Louis XV style — the movement having reached its best expression during that sybaritic French king’s reign.

The term “rococo” is thought to be a portmanteau of the French words rocaille and coquilles — “rock” and “shells” — organic motifs frequently used in architecture and design of the style.

When it comes to authentic Rococo furniture's characteristics, it is above all sensuous and social. The furniture of earlier eras in Europe had been heavy in every sense; the Rococo period saw the appearance of light-framed upholstered armchairs, side chairs and occasional tables that could easily be moved to form conversational circles.

The signal detail of Rococo furniture design is the gently curved cabriole, or S-shaped chair-, table-, and cabinet-leg. It imitates the bend of a tree limb or a flower stem. In a further reference to nature, furnishings were often asymmetrical and painted white, or in soft, pastel shades. Rococo has become a timeless style, and as the furniture pieces presented on 1stDibs demonstrate, its playful, sculptural forms can provide visual excitement to contemporary, clean-lined spaces.

Rococo Styled Mirror in Walnut with Carving from the 1740s
Located in Lejre, DK
A Rococo-style mirror from the 1740s in Denmark is a remarkable piece of antique furniture that reflects the intricacies of the Rococo design movement during that era. Rococo is a highly ornamental and decorative style characterized by intricate details, asymmetrical forms, and natural motifs. It was prominent in the mid-18th century and often featured flowing lines, delicate carvings, and an overall sense of elegance. The fact that the mirror is in its original condition adds to its historical value. It's a testament to the craftsmanship of the time and provides a glimpse into the aesthetics of the 1740s. The use of walnut in the mirror's construction adds to its allure. Walnut wood was often utilized in antique furniture due to its rich color and durability. The warm tones of the walnut would have likely complemented the intricate carvings and decorative elements of the Rococo style. A mirror like this would have been a cherished possession in its time, gracing the homes of the affluent and aristocratic. It would have been both a functional piece for checking one's appearance and a decorative item that enhanced the overall ambiance of a room. In contemporary settings, an antique Rococo mirror...

Pair of Meissen Style Porcelain and Ebonised Wood Mirrored Wall Brackets

Pair of Meissen style porcelain and ebonised wood mirrored wall brackets German, late 19th Century Height 88cm, width 36/40cm, depth 19cm This superb pair of wall brackets are a masterclass in the Meissen design style. The mirror of each bracket is mounted on an ebonised wood backing, which is surrounded by a porcelain C-scroll surround encrusted with floral decoration. Featuring delicate scrolling motifs, the edge decoration includes both painted floral patterns and moulded floral assemblages, all in a vibrant colour scheme which stands out against the pure white porcelain base. Two expertly crafted birds perch at the corners of each bracket, carefully painted to mimic their real-life counterparts. The very top and very base of each bracket culminates in a playful putto, who represents one of the four seasons. Below the mirrored section of each bracket is a semi-circular wooden top, which sits on top of a basket-shaped porcelain support. Surrounding this support is another porcelain edge, which is encrusted with a floral garland of bright green leaves and delicate blossoms. There is a Dresden mark...

Pair of Venetian 18th-19th Century Rococo Dragon and Bird Mirrors and Consoles
Located in Vancouver, British Columbia
A rare, unique and dramatic pair of Rococo style marble topped giltwood triangular shaped consoles and complimentary slightly elliptical giltwood mirrors. The four pieces are believed to be northern Italian most likely from the Venetian region. The design and carving of the superstructure presented with bunches of grapes, vine leaves, branches and twigs. A winged dragon is shown swirling around and down the central leg of each console. The three legs are joined with a lower stretcher are all presented as vine tree trunks from which germinate more grape leaves and branches. They both have shaped red/grey mottled marble tops. The consoles show more signs of early to mid-18th century Rococo chinoiserie influence. The mirrors were likely made slightly later in the 19th century but in the same Italian region, and appear to have a more Japanese influence in their design especially the hawk/eagle leaning over the top of the mirror. The giltwood frames of the mirrors are completely covered with gilded branches and leaves. On the left side of each mirror is a 'fantastical' dragon-bird, his huge wings spread out and his long tail clinging around the lower branches. He looks up into the eyes of the top hawk/eagle who appears ready to attack the dragon-bird. The whole is a real virtuoso display of carving and whimsical Rococo design. Chippendale in England and his contemporaries were some of the first cabinet makers to design furniture in the Rococo style, the term taken from the French 'Rocaille' (rockwork), as in fantasy constructions such as grottoes. The style originated in France early in the 18th century when there was a reaction against the weighty classicism of the Baroque style. The consequent taste was for something lighter representing an escape from the stifling, self-conscious grandeurs of the Louis XIV period. As pioneered by designers such as Jean Berain and Pierre Lepautre...
