An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique James I English sterling silver seal-top spoons; an addition to our 17th century silverware collection. These exceptional antique James I sterling seal top spoons* have a pear-shaped bowl to a faceted stem. The rounded bowl of each impressive antique silver spoon is plain and unembellished, apart from the feature assay mark. The faceted stems each terminate with a knopped circular seal matrix/die bearing the pin struck initials 'VHM'. This pair of silver seal top spoons represents an early form of functional silverware in which utility, symbolism, and craftsmanship are integrated into a compact domestic object. Defined by their characteristic seal-top finials and balanced proportions, these spoons reflect the material culture and silversmithing techniques of the 16th and 17th centuries. A decidingly charming Chinese polychromed and gilt cast bronze figure of Nanhai Guanyin, Guanyin of the South Sea, Ming Dynasty, 16th/17th century, China. Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, is portrayed here as a beatific figure seated upon a raised lotus pedestal over waves. Guanyin is dressed in heavy robes, and wears an elaborate headdress. The small figure of Amitabha Buddha in the headdress positively identifies this figure as Guanyin.
