In an era where social hierarchies were extremely rigid, this chair was not just a simple piece of furniture, but a representation of the status and importance of those who sat on it. In China, chairs were reserved for people of higher rank, used by the eldest members of the family or offered to esteemed guests. Made from fine hardwoods like rosewood and padauk, materials known for their hardness and resistance to corrosion, this chair is built to last. The woods used, now rare and expensive, give the chair unparalleled beauty and durability. Its square-section legs, solid and well-proportioned, offer stability and refinement, adding a touch of geometric elegance to the overall design. But what truly sets this piece apart is its construction, based on the traditional mortise-and-tenon technique. This method, which does not require nails and rarely uses glue, relies solely on the connection between the tenon and mortise-a perfect balance of yin and yang, according to Taoist philosophy. A distinctive feature of Ningbo style is its use of color, often characterized by red lacquers that, while applied to the surface, still allow the wood grain underneath to show through. This gives the furniture a unique visual depth, while the use of decorative techniques such as carvings or inlays adds an additional layer of sophistication. Born in China during the 19th century, this exquisite rosewood chair grabs our attention with its stunning back, adorned with scrolling patterns and a central splat, accented with low-relief motifs surrounded by pierced foliage. Two open arms, decorated with carved motifs, flank the sides and rest on a rectangular wooden seat. The chair is raised on four straight legs, connected to one another through side stretchers and accented with petite scrolls on the apron, echoing the feet's scrolling extremities. This visceral and sculptural chair is designed and made by renown artist Zhipeng Tan. Size and color is customizable upon request, lead time is 45-60 days. We ship internationally. Since graduating with an industrial design degree from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, Zhipeng Tan has focused on the ancient technique of lost-wax casting. Through this foundry process, rich in heritage and tradition, Tan explores his interest in organic forms. Often inspired by his environmental surroundings, such as water and plants, he explores anthropomorphic themes, as well. Though trained as an industrial designer, he has become an accomplished self-taught sculptor, eagerly exploring the elastic and permeable boundaries between art and design and finding a harmonious fusion of sculpture and furniture, provocative objects of both beauty and utility. Though from his early work, one may sense the influence of Joan Miró, Henry Moore and Constantin Brancusi, and in his more recent pieces there is a nod to the Post-Pop sensibilities of Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami, the work of Zhipeng Tan is thoroughly original, an expression of his exuberance and imagination.
