Scandinavian Modern Rosewood Dining Chairs by Hans Brattrud, set of Six.

By Hove Möbler, Hans Brattrud

Located in London, GB

Scandinavian Modern Rosewood Dining Chairs by Hans Brattrud, Set of Six, 1958 A distinguished and rare collection of six Scandia Senior high‑back dining chairs, crafted in 1958 by Hans Brattrud for Hove Møbler, Norway. Celebrated as one of the most exceptional Scandinavian Modern designs from the post‑war era, the Scandia Senior strikes a balance between sculptural grace and refined ergonomic function. The elegantly bent rosewood slats mirror the shape of the human body, while a minimalist metal base provides stability without sacrificing lightness. These chairs have been expertly restored, repolished, and reupholstered by our team of skilled artisans to preserve their timeless authenticity and ready them for contemporary use. Museum Holdings & Accolades Hans Brattrud’s work—including the Scandia series—is represented in prominent national and international museum collections such as the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Norway and The National Gallery of Australia. The Scandia series has garnered numerous accolades: in 1967, the Scandia Stackable (Junior) chair was awarded the Gold Medal at the International Arts and Crafts Fair in Munich and the “Award for Design Excellence” by the Norwegian Design Council. Later, the Scandia Senior received the Interior Innovation Award, Cologne 2006 and was nominated for The Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany 2007. Listing Highlights • Designer: Hans Brattrud • Maker: Hove Møbler, Norway • Model: Scandia Senior (High-Back) • Date: 1958 • Materials: Rosewood, steel, upholstery • Condition: Fully restored, repolished, reupholstered Why These Chairs Stand Out • Complete set of six — exceptional rarity and visual impact • Sculptural, organic forms that blend comfort with aesthetic purity • Distinguished by museum collections and design awards • Recently featured in Architectural Digest within Sienna Miller...

Traditional Carved Norwegian Kubbestol, Norway 1800s
Traditional Carved Norwegian Kubbestol, Norway 1800s

Traditional Carved Norwegian Kubbestol, Norway 1800s

Located in Utrecht, NL

This “kubbstol” or “kubbestol” is a traditional Scandinavian chair made from a log. The kubbestol was quite common in some districts of Norway from about 1750 to 1960, where it was usually made from logs with significant girth and three to four feet in length. The tree trunk was hollowed out so that the base (from the seat down) would be cylindrical while the back of the chair continues upward from the seat in a curved shield that makes the chair both snug and comfortable. Most, but not all, kubbestols were decorated with carving, painting, or some combination of the two. This chair has beautiful folk patterns hand carved into it, with visible, raw craftsmanship. Carved and painted decorations would differ from district to district and styles changed over time. While the log is seemingly roughly shaped, this chair is surprisingly comfortable, as functionality has been historically important for Scandinavian furniture makers. The kubbestol was often placed next to the open-hearth fireplace or next to the bed, and it was reserved for the head of the household. Large, impressive farmhouses might have had several richly carved and painted kubbestols as a display of wealth and status. These days the log chair has become a symbol of Scandinavian roots for many families with ties to Norway, Sweden, or Denmark. The kubbestol is a reminder of our rural heritage and a time when most things in and around the home were made by hand from materials found in nature. Essentially a chair hewn from a tree trunk, this chair is as closely associated with Norway as Peer Gynt...

Adolf Relling & Frederik Kayser "Kaminstolen" for Arnestad Bruk, Norway, 1940s

Adolf Relling & Frederik Kayser "Kaminstolen" for Arnestad Bruk, Norway, 1940s

By Adolf Relling, Fredrik A. Kayser

Located in Utrecht, NL

Designed in 1946 by Norwegian designers, Adolf Relling & Frederik Kayser, these so called “Kaminstolen” are a distinct pair thanks to their peculiar frame. The name can be roughly translated as “fireplace or stove chair”. Besides the unique look, these chairs’ manufacturer is also noteworthy as many of the Norwegian classic furniture pieces from the 1950s and 60s first saw the light of day at the furniture factory Arnestad bruk in Vollen. The fireplace chair as an expression refers to all kinds of chairs placed in front of fireplaces, connected by a single shared characteristic: their comfort. Here, comfort refers to both the ergonomic and visual aspect. Fireplace chairs usually come in pairs and feature an upholstered body designed for relaxing. The wooden frames are very precisely crafted, showcasing the exciting angles and forms predominantly on the arms. At the same time, while there are numerous sharp angles and corners, the chairs still exude a cosy and welcoming appearance which is a result of the smoothed edges of the arms and legs. Both Relling and Kayser were of great importance for the functionalist furniture...
