Antique Naga Primitive Chair Early 20th century / Side Chair Wabi Sabi

Antique Naga Primitive Chair Early 20th century / Side Chair Wabi Sabi

Located in Chōsei District Nagara, JP

This is a primitive chair of the Naga people. Quiet in its stance yet commanding in presence, it is a remarkably compelling piece that combines the strength of a sculptural work with the simplicity of folk furniture. It is believed to date from the early 20th century. Over many decades, the wood has taken on a deeply smoked tone, transforming into a rich dark brown surface that seems to embody time itself. Countless blade marks remain visible across the surface, and the worn patina softly reflects light. More than a piece of furniture, it stands as an art object capable of anchoring an entire space. The Naga people are a collective term for indigenous tribes living in the mountainous regions spanning present-day Northeast India and Myanmar. With their own distinct culture and spirituality, they developed powerful forms of craftsmanship, including wood carving and weaving. Born from a life lived in close relationship with nature, their creations value symbolism and function over decoration, resulting in a profoundly primal beauty. Naga chairs...

Easy Chair in Sissoo by Pierre Jeanneret c.1955

Easy Chair in Sissoo by Pierre Jeanneret c.1955

By Pierre Jeanneret

Located in London, GB

Wonderful original Easy Chair designed by Pierre Jeanneret. Model no. PJ-SI-29-A. The Easy Chair is masterpiece of modernist design, comfortable and practical, showcasing Jeanneret’s iconic “compass” style, with triangular-section legs, curved backrest and sloping armrests. Made in richly coloured Sissoo, lightly restored and re-caned to retain as much of the chair’s original patina as possible. Pierre Jeanneret (22 March 1896 - 4 December 1967) was a Swiss architect who collaborated with his cousin, Le Corbusier, designing furniture for Le Corbusier's vast modernist complex at Chandigarh. Jeanneret remained for over 15 years as the project’s chief architect and the city remains a masterpiece of the modern vision. The pair pioneered a new aesthetic that placed function and order over embellishment—Jeanneret’s work imbuing the strict geometry of modernism with lighter materials like cane and wood. Jeanneret also collaborated with other modern masters, Charlotte Perriand on experiments in aluminium and wood, and Jean Prouve developing prefabricated housing. Literature: Catalogue Raisonné du Mobilier: Jeanneret Chandigarh, 2019. Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, The Indian Adventure...

Louis XV Chairs Pair Designed by Paul Mathieu for Stephanie Odegard
Louis XV Chairs Pair Designed by Paul Mathieu for Stephanie Odegard

Louis XV Chairs Pair Designed by Paul Mathieu for Stephanie Odegard

By Paul Mathieu (French), Stephanie Odegard Collection

Located in New York, NY

Louis XV chairs pair designed by Paul Mathieu for Stephanie Odegard. He chose the name “Louise” when he created his more feminine version of Louis XV furniture and this elegant pair of Louis XV Chairs. The characteristic cabriole leg, curving outward at the knee and inward towards the foot in an "S" shape was born during Louis XV period. It is during the same era that English furniture makers produced the Queen Anne and Chippendale styles. The style of 18th-century French furniture was guided by the court. When Louis XV, who reigned from 1715–74, focused royal life on the smaller salons of Versailles rather than its grand chambers, it transformed the aesthetics away from the imposing and angular furniture that characterized the style of Louis XIV. A broader focus on comfort and more delicate forms define antique Louis XV furniture...
