Philipp Aduatz´ intention in the design of the Melting Chair is to capture a transient transformation within a sculptural object. The Melting Chair, which is suitable for use, is carefully crafted to appear to the viewer either as a solid chair melting away or as a solidification of a liquid melt.
Usually, materials can be observed in certain aggregate phases: they can be solid, fluid or gaseous, but not at the same time. Only during phase transitions the borders between these phases become blurred. This moment of change seems utterly fragile and filled with fascinating possibilities at the same time. Aduatz main goal in the design of the Melting Chair was to hold on to this fleeting moment and phrase his fascination for it into a usable object.
To create a realistic illusion, Aduatz studied the solidification of fluids as well as the melting of solids with modern 3D animation software. With this background, he designed the surface of the object down to the smallest detail - like an architect plans...

Setting design, comfort and independence of form atop four legs to create an upholstered chair that unites function and aesthetics, is the height of artistic design. In Vuelta, Jaime Hayon has created an unmistakable look – brought to life by Wittmann with characteristically uncompromising handcraftsmanship – that leaves nothing to be desired. Curiosity, determination and experience – from designer and manufacturer alike – have now made it possible to transfer all of Vuelta’s popular attributes to the dining room. Featuring typical Vuelta stitching, the upholstered seat has a comfortable pocket-sprung core. The curved shape of the backrest gently tapers forward to form an armrest. Vuelta Dining Chair is supported by graceful tubular legs in a choice of black or – for a particularly refined look – satin matt brass. Adolf Loos (1870 - 1933) designed the chair model shown here in 1899 based on an English model as part of his earliest work as an interior designer for the dining room in Eugen Stössler's apartment in Vienna. The omission of the front supports of the armrests and the backwards curved legs lend the early chair a touch of elegance. Instead of the turned legs of the English model, Loos used smooth round wood with brass feet to protect the carpet. So these ankle cuffs fulfill a practical purpose and at the same time have a decorative effect. They thus correspond to Loos' demand for a 'unity of form and function'.
Beautifully shaped furniture made by hand in high quality, solid walnut and veneered, shellac hand-polished, upholstered seat and covered with leather, brass nails and brass shoes.
Execution: Friedrich Otto Schmidt, Vienna, circa 1900
Model number 6865
The model was produced by the company F. O. Schmidt and was also in their offer at the time. This explains why this chair model, specially designed by Loos for one of his interiors, can also be found on the art market.
