Rococo Furniture

ROCOCO STYLE

Rococo was an aesthetic movement in the fine and decorative arts in the 18th century that found its inspiration in nature and fostered an overall lightness and delicacy of form, construction and ornament in interior design. Rococo furniture, while greatly influenced by trends in Italy and Germany, is often called Louis XV style — the movement having reached its best expression during that sybaritic French king’s reign.

The term “rococo” is thought to be a portmanteau of the French words rocaille and coquilles — “rock” and “shells” — organic motifs frequently used in architecture and design of the style.

When it comes to authentic Rococo furniture's characteristics, it is above all sensuous and social. The furniture of earlier eras in Europe had been heavy in every sense; the Rococo period saw the appearance of light-framed upholstered armchairs, side chairs and occasional tables that could easily be moved to form conversational circles.

The signal detail of Rococo furniture design is the gently curved cabriole, or S-shaped chair-, table-, and cabinet-leg. It imitates the bend of a tree limb or a flower stem. In a further reference to nature, furnishings were often asymmetrical and painted white, or in soft, pastel shades. Rococo has become a timeless style, and as the furniture pieces presented on 1stDibs demonstrate, its playful, sculptural forms can provide visual excitement to contemporary, clean-lined spaces.

19th Century French Rococo Carved Giltwood Marble Top Console Table
19th Century French Rococo Carved Giltwood Marble Top Console Table

19th Century French Rococo Carved Giltwood Marble Top Console Table

Located in Swedesboro, NJ

Dimensions: 36.75 inches high x 56.25 inches wide x 25 inches deep. An extraordinary 19th century French Rococo carved giltwood console table, lavishly executed with dramatic sculptural carving, sweeping curves, and an impressive rouge marble top. Crafted during the last quarter of the 19th century, this exceptional console embodies the opulence, movement, and theatrical elegance associated with the finest French Rococo revival furnishings of the Belle Époque period. The table is crowned by a striking rouge marble top showcasing rich tones of deep red, terracotta, cream, and soft white veining throughout. The serpentine shaped marble beautifully complements the flowing Rococo silhouette beneath while adding luxurious visual contrast and timeless sophistication. The natural movement and coloration of the marble create remarkable depth and make the top a focal point in its own right. The heavily carved giltwood frame is of exceptional quality, displaying remarkable craftsmanship and sculptural artistry throughout. The frieze is richly adorned with scrolling acanthus leaves, shell motifs, floral carvings, and elaborate Rococo ornamentation executed with extraordinary depth and refinement. At the center sits a dramatic carved shell crest flanked by flowing asymmetrical scrollwork, a hallmark of the Rococo style. The boldly scrolled legs are lavishly carved with floral garlands, foliate motifs, and intricate detailing that continue throughout every visible surface of the piece. The architectural movement of the legs creates a wonderfully dynamic silhouette while maintaining elegance and balance. The shaped stretcher base is equally impressive, featuring additional carved floral ornamentation and a central urn form finial that reinforces the luxurious decorative presence of the table. The original gilt finish has developed a beautifully aged patina over time, with subtle distressing and warm tonal variation that add tremendous character and authenticity. This naturally worn surface enhances the old-world European charm and highlights the sculptural carving throughout the frame. French Rococo consoles...
