Antique 19th century French Louis Quinze Gold Gilt Mirror with Facetted Glass
About the Item
On offer here is a beautiful antique French mirror in Louis Quinze or Rococo style. It features the asymmetrical ornamentation typical for Louis Quinze and Rococo. The double-arched top features an intricate crown with motifs such as scrolls, flowers, and acanthus leaves. The frame has a beautiful color that is made by a combination of gold leaf, silver leaf, and gold paint. The gold leaf has a red undertone, the bole layer shining through. The most elevated part of the frame was silver leaf gilt and finished with a yellow ochre patina that renders the silver gold. The gold paint was made by mixing gold dust with shellac. The different shades of gold gave the frame more definition. The whole frame has a wonderful patina and is in exceptionally good condition. The original mirror plate has a silver nitrate silvered mirror with a facetted edge and is in very good condition. There are hardly any spots and only very few minor scratches. A truly unique piece with stunning gold color. The mirror plate was removed from the frame and the whole piece was gently cleaned. The glass was firmly reinserted and a new pine back cladding was added. The mirror is now clean, solid, and ready for use.
