Rococo Furniture

ROCOCO STYLE

Rococo was an aesthetic movement in the fine and decorative arts in the 18th century that found its inspiration in nature and fostered an overall lightness and delicacy of form, construction and ornament in interior design. Rococo furniture, while greatly influenced by trends in Italy and Germany, is often called Louis XV style — the movement having reached its best expression during that sybaritic French king’s reign.

The term “rococo” is thought to be a portmanteau of the French words rocaille and coquilles — “rock” and “shells” — organic motifs frequently used in architecture and design of the style.

When it comes to authentic Rococo furniture's characteristics, it is above all sensuous and social. The furniture of earlier eras in Europe had been heavy in every sense; the Rococo period saw the appearance of light-framed upholstered armchairs, side chairs and occasional tables that could easily be moved to form conversational circles.

The signal detail of Rococo furniture design is the gently curved cabriole, or S-shaped chair-, table-, and cabinet-leg. It imitates the bend of a tree limb or a flower stem. In a further reference to nature, furnishings were often asymmetrical and painted white, or in soft, pastel shades. Rococo has become a timeless style, and as the furniture pieces presented on 1stDibs demonstrate, its playful, sculptural forms can provide visual excitement to contemporary, clean-lined spaces.

A Flute Serenade: Late 19th Century French Pastoral Tapestry of Rococo Elegance

By François Boucher

Located in Dallas, TX

74030 Rare Antique French Aubusson Tapestry, 04’04 x 10’02. Evoking the splendor of France’s Rococo age, this handwoven wool antique French tapestry is an exquisite vision of romance, artistry, and timeless grace. Woven in the late 19th century, it draws inspiration from the pastoral tableaux of François Boucher, whose idyllic depictions of courtly leisure and bucolic charm defined the spirit of the era. Here, a young woman strolls behind a gallant flutist along a sun-dappled woodland path—an intimate moment caught in silk and wool, imbued with the tender lyricism of a love song whispered through the French countryside. Every thread speaks of heritage, mastery, and the kind of effortless elegance that only centuries of refinement could produce. The tranquil scene is a study in pastoral poetry: soft foliage, muted sunlight filtering through trees, and the rustling quiet of a timeless afternoon. The dreamlike color palette—dusty rose, celadon, gold, and faded umber—conveys the patina of history while radiating a romantic luminosity that feels alive even today. This is not simply an artifact of French décor; it is a living artwork, woven with emotion, movement, and musicality. The one-of-a-kind composition unfolds like a painting by Watteau or Fragonard—an ode to the pleasures of nature, beauty, and human connection. The craftsmanship reveals the hand of a master weaver trained in the grand Aubusson and Gobelins tradition, where textile art transcended function to become a mark of nobility. Each precious weave captures tonal nuance and painterly shading with breathtaking precision—a feat achieved only by ateliers devoted to the highest standards of European artistry. This tapestry once would have graced the walls of aristocratic salons and manors, its presence signaling sophistication, education, and cultured taste. Today, its survival stands as a testament to both its quality and its enduring charm. To own such an exquisite work of art is to inherit a fragment of France’s artistic legacy—a portal to a world of refinement and reverie. This antique pastoral tapestry...

Chelsea Porcelain Frill Vase with Birds, Rococo ca 1760
Chelsea Porcelain Frill Vase with Birds, Rococo ca 1760

Chelsea Porcelain Frill Vase with Birds, Rococo ca 1760

By Chelsea Porcelain

Located in London, GB

This is a charming frill vase made by the Chelsea Porcelain factory in about 1760. The vase is in the Rococo style and it speaks for itself why this style of vase is called a "frill" vase. This vase has undergone restorations (although it still holds water perfectly) and is therefore offered As Found (A/F) at a reduced price. Chelsea was one of the very early adopters of porcelain in the British china industry. Founded in 1744 the Chelsea pottery was for about 40 years the leading maker of fine chinaware, excelling in their sense of style, perfection and constant innovation and inspiring many following generations of china makers. The company was started by French silversmith Nicholas Sprimont and you can see the influence of the French style of silverware...

Maker: Style of Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener Date: Late 19th Century Dimension: 39(H) x 62(W) x 24(D) inches Inspired by Charles Cressent, this darling rosewood commode showcases the increasingly favored theme of hilarious monkey antics. Named "commode aux enfants balançant un singe," the style is beloved by many. One is showcased in the Rothschild Collection at Waddesdon Manor, and another located within the Linsky Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; two reside in the Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon, and another is part of the collection at the Louvre. Singerie — from the French for "Monkey Trick" — is a genre of art in which monkeys are depicted apeing human behaviour. Adorned with cast gilt bronze, the commode features a delightful scene on its front and sides where two children playfully swing a monkey on a rope amidst a lavish display of cast acanthus leaves.
