Rococo Furniture

ROCOCO STYLE

Rococo was an aesthetic movement in the fine and decorative arts in the 18th century that found its inspiration in nature and fostered an overall lightness and delicacy of form, construction and ornament in interior design. Rococo furniture, while greatly influenced by trends in Italy and Germany, is often called Louis XV style — the movement having reached its best expression during that sybaritic French king’s reign.

The term “rococo” is thought to be a portmanteau of the French words rocaille and coquilles — “rock” and “shells” — organic motifs frequently used in architecture and design of the style.

When it comes to authentic Rococo furniture's characteristics, it is above all sensuous and social. The furniture of earlier eras in Europe had been heavy in every sense; the Rococo period saw the appearance of light-framed upholstered armchairs, side chairs and occasional tables that could easily be moved to form conversational circles.

The signal detail of Rococo furniture design is the gently curved cabriole, or S-shaped chair-, table-, and cabinet-leg. It imitates the bend of a tree limb or a flower stem. In a further reference to nature, furnishings were often asymmetrical and painted white, or in soft, pastel shades. Rococo has become a timeless style, and as the furniture pieces presented on 1stDibs demonstrate, its playful, sculptural forms can provide visual excitement to contemporary, clean-lined spaces.

The Silk Jardin Royale: A Vintage Persian Qum Masterpiece of Rococo Elegance
The Silk Jardin Royale: A Vintage Persian Qum Masterpiece of Rococo Elegance

The Silk Jardin Royale: A Vintage Persian Qum Masterpiece of Rococo Elegance

Located in Dallas, TX

72891 Vintage Persian Silk Qum Rug, 13'07 x 20'01. This hand-knotted vintage Persian silk Qum rug is a triumph of refinement—an ode to French Romanticism interpreted through the masterful lens of Persian artistry. Woven entirely in luminous silk, it shimmers with quiet opulence, each knot capturing light like brushed satin. Palace-worthy in scale and ambition, this is the sort of textile once reserved for private salons, formal reception rooms, and interiors curated with discernment. It does not simply decorate a space; it elevates it. At the heart of the exceptional composition, a concentric round medallion unfurls in breathtaking detail, radiating outward in perfectly orchestrated symmetry. Layer upon layer of petaled geometry forms a celestial rosette—symbolic of harmony, divine order, and the eternal garden. From this nucleus, a frenzied paradise emerges: blooming palmettes, curling arabesque vines, and leafy tendrils entwine with peonies, carnations, and lotus blossoms. The silky beige ground becomes a luminous canvas, allowing the florals to float in rhythmic motion, like a perfumed breeze through a royal conservatory. The corner spandrels are composed with unmistakable Baroque flair—sweeping scrolls and lavish bouquets cascade inward, framing the central medallion with theatrical grace. These flourishes speak to cross-cultural influence, where iconic Persian garden symbolism meets European romantic sensibility. Surrounding the field, an elegant millefleur border blossoms with miniature florals, each one rendered with astonishing clarity. Guard borders of ornamental floral meanders complete the enclosure, offering structure and refinement while maintaining visual abundance. The color story is dreamy and decadent—soft blush, antique rose, warm ivory, and deep garnet layered with painterly nuance. The silk pile enhances every tonal shift, producing a depth that feels almost alive. This exquisite work of art is not merely decorative; it is ceremonial. Designed for interiors that honor legacy and cultivated taste, it brings an air of formality, artistry, and exclusivity. To acquire such an extraordinary masterpiece is to embrace a heritage of craftsmanship and an aesthetic reserved for those who understand that true luxury whispers rather than shouts. Perfect for a large entertaining space, hotel lobby, lounge area, state room, great room, drawing room, country club, academic library, golf locker room, trophy room, private Chambers, great room, wine cellar, executive suite, conservatory, royal suite, billiards room, owners retreat, dining room, living room, or formal sitting room. Well-suited for a variety of interior styles: Rococo, French Provincial, Rocaille, Louis XV, Louis XIV, Parisian, Baroque, Empire, Romantic, Georgian, Neoclassical, Southern Living, Renaissance, Victorian, Regency, European, Old World, English Country, Tudor, Manor House and Traditional. Whether in a formal setting with elaborate furnishings or in an Ottoman style interior, this oversized silk Persian rug will bring vibrant life where it is displayed. Rendered in variegated shades of beige, pink coral, rose, salmon, ink blue, black, red, tan, light green, baby blue, sage, and brown with other accent colors. Abrash. Hand-knotted silk. Made in Iran. Baron Rais d'Eisenberg, Hand-Colored Equestrian Engraving c. 1747, "Le Brillant"
Baron Rais d'Eisenberg, Hand-Colored Equestrian Engraving c. 1747, "Le Brillant"

Baron Rais d'Eisenberg, Hand-Colored Equestrian Engraving c. 1747, "Le Brillant"

By Eisenberg

Located in Morristown, NJ

18th century German, a hand-colored engraving of a dressage horse and rider from Description du Manège Moderne by Friedrich Wilhelm, Baron Rais d' Eisenberg (German, ca. 1700-ca. 1770). Engraved by Bernard Picart (French, 1673-1733). Titled "Le Brillant", this dressage engraving is plate XXXIII. There is a gallery label verso. The print is matted and framed under UF-3 plexiglass, which offers the maximum amount of UV protection (approx. 97%). This print was originally part of an illustrated book Baron d'Eisenberg made describing the art of the cavaliers and depicting the different breeds of horses- The full title of the book is L'Art de Monter a Cheval: ou Description du Manége Moderne, Dans sa Perfection, published in Leipzig: Arkstée et Merkus, 1747). A set of 7 framed engravings from the same book sold at Sotheby's for $9,500 (plus tax and buyers premium). Reference: The author, a German horseman and artist, spent some of his youth at the manège of Saxe-Weimar before entering into the service of the Emperor. He then spent six years in Naples as the Master of Horse of the Viceroy before returning to Vienna where he studied under M. de Regenthal, the imperial Master of Horse. He participated in the coronation of the Emperor Charles V at Frankfurt in 1711, then spent some time in England, but was back in Germany before 1753. He probably died in Tuscany where he was Director and Master of the Horse at the Academy in Pisa. Brunet II, 957; Mennessier de la Lance I, p. 438. The Baron wrote several important and lavishly illustrated books on horses: his Description du manège moderne dans sa perfection, London 1727, and Dictionnaire des termes du manège moderne, 1747, being the best well-known. He dedicated Description du Manège Moderne to King George II and to his son, His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Subscribers to the book included royalty and nobility from all over Europe. The engraver was Bernard Picart, born in Paris in 1673. He gained honors at the Academy of Paris at the age of sixteen. He was a master designer and engraver and worked in Paris and Amsterdam until his death in 1733. Dimensions: 9"h x 12"w (sight), 16.5"h x 19.25"w (frame) Condition: Good, some rippling to sheet, not examined out of frame. Provenance: Lombard Antiquarian Maps & Prints, Cape Elizabeth...
