Rococo Furniture

ROCOCO STYLE

Rococo was an aesthetic movement in the fine and decorative arts in the 18th century that found its inspiration in nature and fostered an overall lightness and delicacy of form, construction and ornament in interior design. Rococo furniture, while greatly influenced by trends in Italy and Germany, is often called Louis XV style — the movement having reached its best expression during that sybaritic French king’s reign.

The term “rococo” is thought to be a portmanteau of the French words rocaille and coquilles — “rock” and “shells” — organic motifs frequently used in architecture and design of the style.

When it comes to authentic Rococo furniture's characteristics, it is above all sensuous and social. The furniture of earlier eras in Europe had been heavy in every sense; the Rococo period saw the appearance of light-framed upholstered armchairs, side chairs and occasional tables that could easily be moved to form conversational circles.

The signal detail of Rococo furniture design is the gently curved cabriole, or S-shaped chair-, table-, and cabinet-leg. It imitates the bend of a tree limb or a flower stem. In a further reference to nature, furnishings were often asymmetrical and painted white, or in soft, pastel shades. Rococo has become a timeless style, and as the furniture pieces presented on 1stDibs demonstrate, its playful, sculptural forms can provide visual excitement to contemporary, clean-lined spaces.

18th Century Cherub Head Sketch Painting Oil on Canvas
Located in Milan, IT
Venetian school, 18th century Study with the head of a cherub Measures: Oil on canvas, 45.5 x 41 cm - with frame 54.5 x 49.5 cm The present qualifies as a study or preparatory sketch by virtue of the structural and figural layout; by reason of formal and substantial evidence, it can be traced back to the mature neo-Venetian style, which in the eighteenth century had begun to produce figurations of extreme typological pathetism and formal expressionism. The contemporary painting experience of Tiepolo commanded the Venetian art scene, once the lesson of Pier Francesco Mola (1612-1666) was overruled. The delicate putto head offered here, in which a cherub is recognizable due to the happy iconographic solution of the wings placed under the angel's face, is outlined with a vigorous vitalism. A foreshortened point of view illuminates his face in a grazing way, probing his features with strong shadows and with a youthful blush that orange his cheeks. The veristic perfection with which the artist arranges the semblant is of marvelous expressiveness. The eyes are swollen with intensity, and together with the general setting of the head they denounce a conscious reflection on the physiognomy, peculiar within the emerging context of Venetian painting. The painting in question is affected by the large-scale productions, both monumental and perspective, at the time in vogue in the territory of the Serenissima. Conceived through a vision from below, the portrait reveals from the Venetian Rococo that particular predilection for the open and clear, airy ways, denounced in the first instance by Tiepolo. The conscious detachment from the Cortona-style decorativism and from the repeated layout solutions then in vogue allow us to approach the present to the production of Francesco Fontebasso...

Antique Italian Maiolica Coolers Pasquale Rubati Manufacture Milan, 1770 Circa
Located in Milano, IT
Assortment of bottle and glass coolers in Maiolica. Pasquale Rubati manufacture Milan, circa 1770 Maiolica polychrome decorated “a piccolo fuoco” (third fire) a - Bottle cooler 5.91 in x 5.91 in diameter (15 x 15 cm ) Weight: 1.86 lb (845 g) b - Bottle cooler 6.89 x 7.87 in diameter (17,5 x 20 cm) Weight: 2.09 lb (948 g) c - Pair of glass-cooler vases 3.94 x 3.94 in diameter (10 x 10 cm) Weight: 1.43 lb (650 g) Good state of conservation: a - some chipping from use on the edge; a - two fêlures covered on the edge; c - one has deep chippings on the edge and the other a subtle fêlure. Two Majolica factories were active in Milan in the 18th century. The first, starting from 1745, was owned by Felice Clerici; the other one by Pasquale Rubati from 1756. Rubati was in competition with Felice, whose worker he had been prior to opening his own workshop. On his death in 1796, the business was continued for a few more years by his son Carlo. Recent studies have recognized Pasquale Rubati's contribution as the creator of "Strasbourg-style" decorations with their particularly joyful depictions. This style had previously been attributed to the Lodi manufacturers. These works here, however, are a clear example of this production. The Majolica containers have different sizes, a cylindrical shape and rest on a low foot ring. The two largest are completed by handles in the shape of a zoomorphic mask with wide open jaws, while the smaller ones have handles applied with an anthropomorphic mask. All the works are characterized by elegant floral decoration. The two twin glass coolers show bunches of flowers centered around a main corolla, a rose or a peony paired...

Silver Fruit Tray or Tray, Córdoba, Bartolomé Gálvez y Aranda, 1759-1768, Spain
By Bartolomé Gálvez y Aranda
Located in Madrid, ES
Salva cordobesa in silver, 1759-1768. With brands. Córdoba, Spain. Weight: 820 g. Salva in silver Rococo style, with punches of Cordoba and the score Bartolomé Gálvez y Aranda. It has a high, stepped foot, with a circular base, adorned with incised streaks and other simple motifs of a Classic type, announcing the change of language towards Neoclassicism. However, the dish itself is still distinctly Rococo, with a profile of curved mitering that translates into edges in the eaves. Bartolomé Gálvez y Aranda was a silversmith, although he worked as a marker between 1759 and 1772, using for this work the punch that we see here: his surname in capital letters, in very trapezoidal frame and surmounted by a fleur-de-lys in three-lobed projection. To this punch Gálvez y Aranda will add since 1768 the chronological mark, so this salvo would be dated between 1759 and 1768. It is also an especially interesting piece to come from Cordoba, the main center of Spanish silverware of the Rococo period, from whose workshops came religious and profane pieces of high quality, aimed at customers not only local but throughout the Iberian Peninsula, reaching even the Canary Islands and Latin America. The great diffusion of the Cordovan silversmith will take place, in fact, in the last quarter of the 18th century, through the so-called master silversmiths. These characters acted as trade corridors, according to Pérez Grande, visiting the churches and fairs held throughout the country. The activity of these silversmiths was also favored by tax exemptions...

Italian 18th century Rococo archtop painted and gilded mirror. The frame is decorated with gold leaf c-scroll leaves and urns with a shell sculpted and carved molding. It has marbleized painted inlay with muted colors of blue, green, and gray with wine veining creating a marble effect. The mirror is richly decorated with carved wood elements and a coordinating trim. These frame the central shelf corner of the carved urns which signify the possible use of an over mantel for a large room with high ceilings. The mirror has the original mercury mirror and is distressed due to age. The back of the mirror is also original. This mirror was created in Italy during the Rococo era of the 18th century. Rococo style is characterized by elaborate ornamentation, asymmetrical values, and curved or serpentine lines as reflected in this mirror.
