A Colorful 1930s Modern Street Scene of St. Charles Street, New Orleans by Notable Chicago Artist, Walter Burt Adams (Am. 1903-1990). A vibrant, painterly view of a sunlit street corner and store front in the historic Garden District of New Orleans, Louisiana. Completed in 1938 during one of the artist's painting trips to New Orleans, and most likely painted in the quiet morning hours, a favored time to paint by the artist. A wonderful example of Walter Burt Adams renowned Urban Realism of the 1930s and '40s, inspired by the artwork of fellow American painter, Edward Hopper. Exhibited: "The 42nd Annual Exhibition of Artists of Chicago and Vicinity", Art Institute of Chicago (AIC), Chicago, IL, 1938, #4. Walter Burt Adams was a dedicated painter of the American Scene and a singular personality among his peers in the Chicago Modern Art community. His no-nonsense manner, devotion to his craft and sardonic sense of humor characterize a man whose paintings capture life in and around Chicago between the early 1920s and the late 1970s. Born in Kenosha, Wisconsin just after the turn of the last century, Walter Burt Adams spent his childhood in Fargo, North Dakota and began his artistic education there through a correspondence cartooning class as a boy. After finishing high school in Fargo, Adams moved to Chicago in 1922 in order to enroll at the school of the Art Institute of Chicago. A new middle class began to emerge in Colonial America and a migration into urban areas began. Unlike farmhouses, these new homes were elegant two-store homes designed in the new Georgian style, imitating the lifestyle of the upper middle class of England. The interiors consisted of a passageway down the middle of the house with specialized rooms off the sides, such as a library, dining room, sitting room or a primary bedroom. Unlike the multi-purpose space of the farmhouse, each of these rooms served a separate purpose. This new middle class had leisure time to entertain guests. In this sitting room, the Kupjacks have replicated this stately room with upholstered furniture, a working fireplace, decorative ceramics and silver accent pieces. This miniature room is presented in a custom leather bound case with faux books on either end as if it could be placed in a bookshelf. the room can also be installed in a wall. Based in Chicago, IL, contemporary artist Michael Thompson creates unique kites, collages and mixed media works assembled from material fragments of past and present collected in his travels. In his ongoing series of memory jugs, Thompson adorns stoneware vessels with a kaleidoscope of ceramic shards, found objects, and pocket-sized trinkets he collected over the course of his life. Also known as forget-me-not jugs or spirit jars, memory jugs are African American folk art objects that honor a loved one who has recently passed. Small tokens and mementos of the deceased are gathered and affixed to the exterior of a jug or vase, an abundance of memories that celebrates a life lived to the fullest. Michael Thompson applies this tradition to his own practice, creating tactile assemblages of this and that. Formed in the manner of collage, each jug honors the lost memories of generations past and his own memories of personally discovering each item. With varied sources for materials including Kyoto, Turkey, and Mexico, a great number of the found shards are 18th and 19th century ceramics...

An original 1920s silver gelatin print by famed photographer Tina Modotti, showing a mural fresco by Diego Rivera in the Agricultural School-Chapingo, Mexico. Photo is stamped “Photographs-Tina Modotti Mexico, D.F.” on reverse. Photograph size: 6 7/8 x 9 5/8 inches. Archivally matted to 16 x 20 inches. Tina Modotti was born in Udine, Italy in 1896 and by the age of 14 she was supporting her entire family by working in a local silk factory. Modotti’s father emigrated to San Francisco, sending for his family in 1913. Modotti was hired in the sewing room at the I. Magnin department store, but her great beauty attracted the attention of her superiors who then employed her to model the store’s fashions. In 1915, Modotti attended San Francisco’s Pan-Pacific Exposition, where she got her first look at Modern art and photography. She also met her first husband at the Exposition, painter and poet Roubaix de l’Abrie Richey. At this time Modotti began acting in local Italian theatre and was discovered by a talent scout for the new silent film industry in Hollywood. She arrived in Los Angeles in 1918 and was cast in “The Tiger’s Coat” and “I Can Explain”. Through her Hollywood connections, Modotti met the married photographer Edward Weston, with whom she began an affair. Modotti was a favorite subject of Weston’s photographs, but moreover he taught her the art of photography. She actually ran Weston’s studio in exchange for photography lessons. Due to the on-going affair between Modotti and Weston, Modotti’s husband moved to Mexico where he died of smallpox. This tragedy and the death of her father made Modotti dissatisfied with Hollywood. Modotti and Weston arrived in Mexico in 1923 at a time when the country was in the midst of a social, political and cultural revolution. She photographed the Mexican...

Original 1931 collotype created from Gustav Kilmt’s Portrait of Friederike Maria Beer, oil on canvas, 1916. Published by Max Eisler and printed by Österreichischer Staatsdruckerei (Austrian State Printing Office), Vienna, in an edition of 500. In 1931, Max Eisler published the most notable posthumous collection of Gustav Klimt works to date. Using a complex gravure process, Klimt’s original oil paintings were painstakingly reproduced as collotypes on a handmade, deckled-edge cream wove paper. This world-class example of collotype captures the superb resolution and color-richness and ornamentation of the original 1916 oil painting.
