Biography:
Born on a farm in Polk County, Nebraska, during the famous blizzard of 1888, Augustus Dunbier became Nebraska's most prominent and widely traveled artist in the early to mid 20th century. Working until the year before his death at age 89, he painted landscapes, still life, and portraits in a style that others, but not he, labelled Impressionist. At age 10, he saw his first professional art work at the Trans-Mississippi Exposition in Omaha, and this exposure set the direction of his life. A year later, he returned with his parents to Germany from where his family had emigrated, and in 1907, he enrolled for seven years of study at the Dusseldorf Academy, known for its instruction in genre and history painting. A recent discovery of a painting that appears to be Farrar’s family dog. This was done when he was just fifteen years old.
As a teenager in the 1940s, Farrar received much local acclaim in the Washington D.C. art Scene. Words like “Child Prodigy”, “Brilliant” and “Gifted” were used to describe him in the local newspaper. He had a great bout of early success which included developing patrons among Washington DC’s art elite but this was short lived as he was afflicted with schizophrenia and alcoholism as an adult causing him to spend much of his life in mental institutions.
In 1942, Farrar won the Washington Times-Herald's outdoor art fair. This painting was executed the following year when he was 15 (1943). That same year he won the top prize at Atlanta University’s third annual “ Exhibition of Paintings, Sculpture and Prints by Negro Artists ” with a piece titled “ Queenie ”. Approximately one hundred and fifty works of art were included in the show, representing the best works of more than seventy-five contemporary African American artists. This show included works by Romare Bearden, who was awarded Honorable Mention for his painting “ The Two Genrerations ”. Also included among the exhibitors - Charles H. Frederick Harold Cress was a British painter who migrated to Australia and won the Archibald Prize in 1988 with a portrait of John Bread.
Cress was born in Poona, British Raj, but went to England with his parents in 1948, when he was ten. He was educated at the Birmingham College of Art in England, and migrated to Australia in 1962 as a "ten pound Pom", meaning that he only had to pay ten pound for his fare to Australia. Cress met the painter Anne Judell and married her in 1967; they divorced in 1991. He started his career painting figuratively, but became well known for his abstract work in the late 60s and 70s.
