About the Item

This painting titled "Mme de Noirmont" is an oil on canvas work from the studio of Nicolas de Largilliere, one of the most prolific and esteemed French portrait painters of the 18th century. Though titled "Mme de Noirmont", this work is separate from the full-length portraits that were most famously composed for the de Noirmont family. The painting by itself is 17.75 in x 14.5 in.
This painting has a significant provenance, having been in the possession of Elizabeth Vanderkloot, née Heagan, at the turn of the 20th century, who had married into the steel magnate Vanderkloot (or Van der Kloot) family of Chicago through Matthew Vanderkloot, son of the steel magnate Adrian Vanderkloot (born Adrianus Van der Kloot). In 1971 she willed the portrait to her daughter in law, Clara Vanderkloot, née Knudsen. Clara Vanderkloot was the daughter of three-star Lt. General and president of General Motors William S. Knudsen as well as the sister of Ford Motors president "Bunkie" Knudsen. The painting then passed into the possession of Karen DiChiera, née Vanderkloot, the daughter of Clara, and wife of David DiChiera, longtime friends and benefactors of the Detroit Opera Theatre with David DiChiera being its founding general director.
Nicolas de Largillière, born in Paris in 1656, was unrivaled in the portraits he composed in his lifetime. His work primarily catered to and focused on the emerging French bourgeoisie and its aldermen, lawyers and financiers, especially in Paris. His work is best remembered in the family portraits he painted, which is where his artistic talents really shined. Largillière received his education in art from his apprenticeship to the still-life and genre painter, Antoine Goubaud. In 1673 he was accepted as a Master Painter in Antwerp, after which he went to England where he worked with Peter Lely between 1674 and 1680. In England was employed to do some minor work by the superintendent of the King's buildings (which included the restoration of Windsor Castle) He left England in 1679 and returned to France. His early work in France reflect the influence of the Flemish court painting he learned in Antwerp. Largillière secured his position in France's Academie in 1686 with his portrait of Charles Le Brun, which can now be viewed in the Louvre. Largillière is often synonymous with his usage of informal poses in portraits and the texture and atmosphere that comes to life with his rich palette.
In 1709, he was tasked with painting the family portrait for King Louis XIV. Notable to the painting is the uneasiness displayed on the king in contrast to the other family members. In the latter part of his career he painted King Augustus II of Poland, the artist Jacques-Antoine Arlaud, "The Study of Different Types of Hands" which is presently within the Louvre, and the portrait of the famous writer Voltaire. Three years before his death in 1746 he was made the chancellor of the French Academy.
His work continues to be exhibited all around the world, with his Portrait of Catherine Coustard with her Son Léonor being exhibited at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, his Portrait of an officer in the Art Gallery of New South Wales, his portrait of Helene Lambert de Thorigny in the Honolulu Museum of Art, and his An Alderman of Paris in The Detroit Institute of Arts. Largillière's influence could be felt for centuries to come, and his studio and circle continued to paint in their master's style, giving us a glimpse into the persistent influence of one of the greatest portrait painters of all time.

Nicolas de Largillière or de Largillierre (Paris, 10 October 1656 - Paris, 20 March 1746) was a French painter. Raised in Antwerp, where his family had moved in 1659, it was in the Flemish city that he began his apprenticeship in the workshop of Antoine Goubeau starting in 1668, mainly influenced by Rubens and the Flemish masters. [He entered the guild of the Sint-Lucasgilde as master of the city in 1674. From 1675 to 1679 he traveled to England, where he approached the Vandyckian painter Peter Lely and was noticed by King Charles II. He will return there in 1685 to paint a portrait of the new King James II. Returning to France, after 1689 he became one of the most sought-after painters, both for official ex-votos or allegories, and for orders of portraits by the nobility and the upper middle class. Nicolas de Largillière was, together with Rigaud, the portrait painter of the Regency era. He also proved to be a brilliant painter of still lifes, following the Flemish school. To the solemnity of the gesture of the person portrayed he combined an uncommon search for minute details. In 1686 he was admitted to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, becoming a professor in 1705 and directing it from 1736 to his resignation in 1743. Among his most important works we can mention: Portrait of Elizabeth Beaubarnais (Museum of Grenoble); Young Man as Diana (Louvre Museum); Ex-voto in Sainte-Geneviève (church of Saint-Étienne-du-Mont, Paris); Family portrait of Louis XIV (Wallace Collection); Portrait with the family (Louvre Museum).

- Portrait of a Lady with a ChiqueadorLocated in New York, NYProvenance: Torres Family Collection, Asunción, Paraguay, ca. 1967-2017 While the genre of portraiture flourished in the New World, very few examples of early Spanish colonial portraits have survived to the present day. This remarkable painting is a rare example of female portraiture, depicting a member of the highest echelons of society in Cuzco during the last quarter of the 17th century. Its most distinctive feature is the false beauty mark (called a chiqueador) that the sitter wears on her left temple. Chiqueadores served both a cosmetic and medicinal function. In addition to beautifying their wearers, these silk or velvet pouches often contained medicinal herbs thought to cure headaches. This painting depicts an unidentified lady from the Creole elite in Cuzco. Her formal posture and black costume are both typical of the established conventions of period portraiture and in line with the severe fashion of the Spanish court under the reign of Charles II, which remained current until the 18th century. She is shown in three-quarter profile, her long braids tied with soft pink bows and decorated with quatrefoil flowers, likely made of silver. Her facial features are idealized and rendered with great subtly, particularly in the rosy cheeks. While this portrait lacks the conventional coat of arms or cartouche that identifies the sitter, her high status is made clear by the wealth of jewels and luxury materials present in the painting. She is placed in an interior, set off against the red velvet curtain tied in the middle with a knot on her right, and the table covered with gold-trimmed red velvet cloth at the left. The sitter wears a four-tier pearl necklace with a knot in the center with matching three-tiered pearl bracelets and a cross-shaped earing with three increasingly large pearls. She also has several gold and silver rings on both hands—one holds a pair of silver gloves with red lining and the other is posed on a golden metal box, possibly a jewelry box. The materials of her costume are also of the highest quality, particularly the white lace trim of her wide neckline and circular cuffs. The historical moment in which this painting was produced was particularly rich in commissions of this kind. Following his arrival in Cuzco from Spain in the early 1670’s, bishop Manuel de Mollinedo y Angulo actively promoted the emergence of a distinctive regional school of painting in the city. Additionally, with the increase of wealth and economic prosperity in the New World, portraits quickly became a way for the growing elite class to celebrate their place in society and to preserve their memory. Portraits like this one would have been prominently displayed in a family’s home, perhaps in a dynastic portrait gallery. We are grateful to Professor Luis Eduardo Wuffarden for his assistance cataloguing this painting on the basis of high-resolution images. He has written that “the sober palette of the canvas, the quality of the pigments, the degree of aging, and the craquelure pattern on the painting layer confirm it to be an authentic and representative work of the Cuzco school of painting...Category
