Contemporary collage by Anne-Joëlle Galley. Anne-Joëlle’s works predominantly with collage, collage-paintings, paintings, and monotypes. The artist studied in Europe, joining various painting ateliers and art courses such as Sotheby’s and ICA - Institute of Contemporary Art/Christies in London.  In the late 90s’, she enrolled at “The Art Students’ League of New York”, where she first became involved with printmaking. Galley uses various techniques and materials, and color remains her signature.  The artist has participated in more than 50 group and solo exhibitions in the US, Mexico, Italy, England, Switzerland, Spain, and Romania. In 2005, she was selected to participate in the I Biennale of Etching and Graphic Work organized by the Cultural Council of Cáceres’ Town Hall, in Spain. That year, she also participated in the Arad International Biennale of Contemporary Art (Arad, Romania). After taking a stroll through St. Georges Botanical Garden in St. Croix USVI this gold spray painted shopping cart part woven with webbed polyurethane ribbons, deconstructed Fresh Direct bags, bottle caps, vintage scarf, plastic grocery mesh and paracord came together. “Using racial conflict as a starting point, I juxtaposes various fibers with a variety of found materials using free form weaving, coiling, knotting, wrapping and jewelry making techniques. Meticulously collected materials, transformed by their collective memory become “social fabric” weaving together contemporary issues and personal narratives. 100-foot extensions of rope, twine, and yarn impeccably wrapped, woven, tied and embellished with recycled beads, ribbon, lace, tape and bottle cap bobbles lures you into my hue-imbued, enmeshed installations symbolizing natural hair. These bold albeit whimsically twisted and locked forms gingerly invite the audience into off the-wall conversations about micro aggressions against black women and their hair. Community art making is also key to my process. Multi-disciplinary experiences pairing people, food, wine, music and art, create a safe space to explore themes such as equity & inclusion, sustainability and personal wellbeing.” -Theda Sandiford

'I have been working on eggshells since I was 8 years old, learning the traditional Ukrainian art of pysanky from my mother. This artistic and cultic use of eggs informs my work to this day - as I believe that eggs are events - not simply objects. The shells (while the protective casing for the new life inside) are memories of the primal events that produced the eggs, intended as new life. In order to infuse new life into this ancient folk art, I have manipulated traditional processes with innovative dyeing & brush techniques, and etching, to forge a new visual language to write on this versatile, organic sphere. The facility of the shell for a range of techniques (batiking, scratching, painting, gilding) affords me a great range of visual expression to manifest ideas, events, and fantasies. “Ancient design for a new worldview” has been the mantra underpinning my studio philosophy and praxis. Picking up pieces of broken eggshells and reconstructing them into new images, the work of my studio, seems like an apt metaphor for this moment. This process born out of recycling studio detritus has offered me a new way to construct new worldview's. Bringing forward from the past images, designs, and compositions can visually realign how we see our own world in these times.' -Paul Wirhun
