Barcelona native artist Raul de la Torre's vibrant abstract mixed media artworks pay homage to textiles. De La Torre allows the materials to take over during the process and collaborates with the unexpected to create works that speak to the natures of dynamism and unity. Experimentation with different materials, textures, and techniques in each of his paintings has been a point of discovery and a major part of Raul de la Torre’s work. In his Fils I Colors series he attempts to find the third dimension through the use of different materials. This colorful 30-inch high by 24-inch wide original artwork on canvas is framed in a natural wood frame. It is wired and ready to hang. Size and price include frame. This artwork is part of de la Torre's Brooklyn Series, which he describes as, "inspired by Brooklyn: the people, the art, the colors, the textures, the poetry." The interaction between the artist, gravity, and the paint is important for the final result. A tilting technique permits the paint to be a major architect of the final result, giving it a life of its own. It results in infinite and timeless color combinations. In many cases, the different layers of color each represent a temporary state of mind, time, and even feelings, places and people. Some of them are embroidered forever in our memory turning to form part of our DNA. To represent the firmness and strength of that past the cotton is mixed with the paint in the works to form a unity. Embroidery provides another layer as it creates thick shadows with organic shapes. De la Torre makes horizontal cuts on the canvas and covers these open areas using color matching cotton thread. When combined with light, these shapes create a more dynamic surface and offer different views of the work to various observers. Raul de la Torre was born in Barcelona in 1964 and attended Massana Art School. About the Fils series, de la Torre remarks: “FILS I COLORS is an attempt to find life, movement and parts that are not static, that change in their interaction with the observer. This piece titled "Popular Item" is an original artwork made from collage, hand embroidery, and latex paint on canvas by Kelly Kozma. This piece is shipped in the pictured white frame and measures 6"h x 6"w framed. The catalyst for this new body of work was a jar of leftover magazine cutouts from a collage I made in 2010. Reusing leftover materials as well repurposing items that might end up thrown away, has become a very important part of my process the past decade. Stumbling across this jar of coin sized images that had waited patiently on a shelf for 12 years, ignited my creative process and drove me to explore collage in a new way. Unlike the piece from 2010 in which I assembled the images by piecing them together, I decided to examine each individual cut out on its on. By removing the image from any other context it allows you to focus solely on its meaning, purpose or feelings that it may evoke. Each image is embedded in a field of French knots which felt like a way of creating a time capsule of sorts for the object. Another inspiration behind this collection is my six year old son and his endless piles of sticks, stones, leaves, etc in our home. Only to him they aren’t sticks and stones, they are treasures. His ability to find a tiny twig or scrap of paper and not only cherish it but give it a backstory of why it is so special, is a beautiful thing and one I have tried to tap into with my new work. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1964. After going to Berlin as a Fulbright Meister Student at Hochscule fur Bildende Kunste in 1964-65 he went on to receive a Master of Fine Arts degree from Cornell University. In addition to the Fulbright Foundation fellowship, La Noue has twice received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. He has had extensive teaching experience at Trinity College 1967-72, the City University of New York 1972-85 and at New York University in 1987. He lives between Arizona, Paris, France and Vermont. Terence La Noue, who has created powerful, compelling paintings for the last four decades, is considered one of the outstanding talents of 20th century American abstract art. Layering canvas, fabric, gauze, acrylic paint and cast elements forming a lively melding of many different materials, symbols and colors to create tapestry-like paintings, he conjures up colorfully rich abstractions that reveal a sense of myth, magic and mystery. His extensive world travels serve as inspiration for works that are abstract mixtures of Western and non-Western traditions and histories. India, South America, Morocco, Mexico and Nepal have been favorite destinations. Terence La Noue’s unique approach to painting and printmaking has achieved worldwide recognition.
