Allegro Con Brio - contemporary, figurative, acrylic and thread sculpture

Located in Bloomfield, ON

This large contemporary clear acrylic sculpture of a piano was inspired by the artist’s love of music. This beautiful and magical piece of modern art is the unique vision of an award-winning author and music lover. Years ago, Ruth Kassinger noticed how sunlight streaming through her living room windows bounced off white walls, through a glass coffee table, and splashed rainbows around the room. When her eyes drifted to the black baby grand piano in the room, she had an epiphany. The idea for a full-scale, transparent piano sculpture filled with colors was born. To create the piano, she worked with a talented team of acrylic glass artisans who created the piano’s body and its keyboard. Using laser technology, thousands of holes were drilled both by computer and by hand to ensure that all of the threads are perfectly parallel. Then, using small acrylic boxes as models, Kassinger spent a year testing various threads to determine spacing and color combinations until they expressed her vision of music. “It takes me months to thread a piano. I use embroidery needles that I manipulate with long-handled surgical forceps. The highly polished, clear acrylic form allows light to flow through the sculpture, illuminating the thousands of multi-hued nylon and French silk threads. The threads change color as you move around the piano and, thanks to an optical phenomenon called moiré, they appear to move as if being played.” Kassinger is best known for her books about science, history, and gardening. As a science writer, she has studied and written about the concepts of transparency and color. As a music lover, Kassinger’s personal experience of listening to music is heightened by a form of synaesthesia where she actually sees colors when she hears music. And, having grown up in a family of craftsmen (her parents had a custom furniture business and she later designed several pieces for her own home), she has the skills to undertake her first sculptural piece: a ‘glass’ piano...

By Lisa Pressman

Located in New York, NY

Lisa Pressman’s Shape of Memory series transforms cardboard, thread, smoke, and Letraset into evocative wall-mounted works that recall ancient relics or worn book covers. Each shaped panel floats about an inch off the wall, often casting glowing, colored shadows from painted backs that shift with the light. Stitched seams and weathered surfaces suggest scars, resilience, and the passage of time, resonating as personal artifacts of memory and healing. Known for her abstract paintings in oil, encaustic, and mixed media, Pressman’s oeuvre consistently explores impermanence and transformation. With their sculptural presence and luminous effects, these intimate objects blur painting...

Fils I Colors DCXXVII - Colorful Mixed Media Abstract Vibrant Artwork on Canvas

Fils I Colors DCXXVII - Colorful Mixed Media Abstract Vibrant Artwork on Canvas

By Raul de la Torre

Located in Los Angeles, CA

Barcelona artist Raul de la Torre's vibrant abstract mixed media artworks pay homage to the material. De La Torre allows the materials to take over during the process and collaborates with the unexpected to create works that speak to the natures of dynamism and unity. Experimentation with different materials, textures, and techniques in each of his paintings has been a point of discovery and a major part of Raul de la Torre’s work. In his Fils I Colors series he attempts to find the third dimension through the use of different materials. The interaction between the artist, gravity, and the paint is important for the final result. A tilting technique permits the paint to be a major architect of the final result, giving it a life of its own. It results in infinite and timeless color combinations. In many cases, the different layers of color each represent a temporary state of mind, time, and even feelings, places, and people. Some of them are embroidered forever in our memory turning to form part of our DNA. To represent the firmness and strength of that past the cotton is mixed with the paint in the works to form a unity. This colorful 30 inch high by 48 inch wide original artwork on canvas is wired and ready to hang. Embroidery provides another layer as it creates thick shadows with organic shapes. De la Torre makes horizontal cuts on the canvas or paper and covers these open areas using color-matching cotton thread. When combined with light, these shapes create a more dynamic surface and offer different views of the work to various observers. The sides of this artwork are painted white and it does not require framing. It is signed and dated by the artist in the lower right corner as well as on the back. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable Continental U.S. and worldwide shipping are available. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included. Raul de la Torre was born in Barcelona in 1964 and attended Massana Art School. About the Fils series, de la Torre remarks: “FILS I COLORS is an attempt to find life, movement, and parts that are not static, that change in their interaction with the observer. The different combinations of colors represent different emotions and interpretations for each individual interacting with the works.” Raul de la Torre's artworks can be found in the collections of The Four Seasons Abu Dhabi, the Tropicana Hotel and Casino Las Vegas, the Rothschild Family Collection, and varying Hilton properties. His works have been exhibited and collected worldwide, including in New York, Hong Kong, and Los Angeles. Artspace Warehouse has been representing and exhibiting Raul de la Torre's original artworks since 2010. The gallery has been a 1stdibs partner since 2014 with consistently excellent reviews from clients worldwide. The gallery exhibits a large selection of affordable original artworks from established and emerging international artists with diverse backgrounds at high standards. "Junk Drawer" paper collage, hand-embroidery, rubber band ball, french knot

By Kelly Kozma

Located in Philadelphia, PA

This piece titled "Junk Drawer" is an original artwork made from collage, hand embroidery, and latex paint on canvas by Kelly Kozma. This piece is shipped in the pictured white frame and measures 6"h x 6"w framed. The catalyst for this new body of work was a jar of leftover magazine cutouts from a collage I made in 2010. Reusing leftover materials as well repurposing items that might end up thrown away, has become a very important part of my process the past decade. Stumbling across this jar of coin sized images that had waited patiently on a shelf for 12 years, ignited my creative process and drove me to explore collage in a new way. Unlike the piece from 2010 in which I assembled the images by piecing them together, I decided to examine each individual cut out on its on. By removing the image from any other context it allows you to focus solely on its meaning, purpose or feelings that it may evoke. Each image is embedded in a field of French knots which felt like a way of creating a time capsule of sorts for the object. Another inspiration behind this collection is my six year old son and his endless piles of sticks, stones, leaves, etc in our home. Only to him they aren’t sticks and stones, they are treasures. His ability to find a tiny twig or scrap of paper and not only cherish it but give it a backstory of why it is so special, is a beautiful thing and one I have tried to tap into with my new work. By placing a picture of a rubberband ball or a set of Dracula teeth or a banana in this embroidered box...

By Michael Thompson

Located in Chicago, IL

Chicago-based artist Michael Thompson creates unique kites crafted from split bamboo frames covered with stretched muslin and a collage of vintage Asian ephemera—including fragments of fabric, scrolls, drawings, and books collected during his travels. This kite entitled "Boro" is patterned with Japanese indigo-dyed fabric scraps, sewn together to form a patchwork of contrasting patterns and shades of blue. The kite's design recreates the traditional practice of Boro stitching...

Fils I Colors DLIII - Framed Blue Contemporary Abstract Mixed Media Painting

By Raul de la Torre

Located in Los Angeles, CA

Experimentation with different materials, textures and techniques in each of his paintings has been a point of discovery and a major part of Raul de la Torre’s artwork. In his Fils I Colors series of works, he attempts to find the third dimension through the use of different materials. This colorful mixed media artwork is painted with acrylic on paper. After painting, the artist cuts holes in the paper which he embroiders over with the exact color thread. This original artwork measures 37 inches high by 30 inches wide. This artwork is framed in a modern white frame, the price and size include the frame. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable U.S. and global shipping available. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included. Initially, he removed paint from the artistic equation by slicing the works, combining canvas and paper with selected materials. Gradually, the slicing gained more importance, a reflection, perhaps, of his increased desire to be more aggressive. Embroidery provides another element as it creates thick shadows with organic shapes. When combined with light, these shapes offer different views of the work to various observers. The interaction between the artist, gravity, and the paint is important for the final result. The technique attempts to eliminate the absolute imprint of the artist’s hand. This permits the paint to be a major architect of the final result, giving it a life of its own. It results in infinite and timeless color combinations. In many cases, the different layers of color each represent a temporary state of mind, time, and even places and people. “FILS I COLORS is an attempt to find life, movement and parts that are not static, that change in their interaction with the observer. The different combinations of colors represent different emotions and interpretations for each individual interacting with the works.” – Raul de la Torre The major motivation for the idea behind his series of city artworks “CIUTATS” was Raul’s city, Barcelona, and it's particular infrastructure and architecture which are unique among the cities of the world and which are easily recognizable. His personal attraction to the great cities of the world and the urban life was a true incentive. In this series he portrays the different aspects of the cities as a human creation with their different levels of physical and social existence. “Man created the city and in turn the city has molded the actions and ideas of the human race. I have intended to mold the city, to create my city, to put in order the urban chaos in a reduced physical space, Forget that the cities in which we live have been formed with asphalt, cement, human misery, forgotten revolutions, buried bones and transform them into a conglomeration of texture and color put onto the frontier of canvas and paper.” - Raul de la Torre Artspace Warehouse has been representing and exhibiting Raul de la Torre's original artworks since 2010. The gallery has been a 1stdibs partner since 2014 with consistently excellent reviews from clients worldwide. The gallery exhibits a large selection of affordable original artworks from established and emerging international artists with diverse backgrounds at high standards.
