Abstract India Edition 5/8 Linocut Print Nature Orange Black Red Love
Located in Norfolk, GB
There is a natural and raw understanding in Mukesh Sharma’s prints that both depict, and are influenced by, the Rajastani communities of his home town in rural India. In these Limited Edition fine-art prints, made over a period of twenty years, we are offered the colours of India’s ancient land, the textures, light and the patterns that are everywhere. In the patterns of the arable fields to the jali's (carved screens) in the architecture. This work is however not romantic nor nostalgic but shows a deeper rooted need to offer a visual heritage of place, of where the artist is from and the journey that he is taking. The results are both compelling and honest. Mukesh Sharma, Voted Dyas II, Lino-cut/ chine colle, on German Ivory paper Edition: 5 of 8, 1999 Image size: 47 x 39 cm / Sheet size: 79 x 55 cm Unframed 'We belong where love finds us' Mukesh Sharma's work: It is often in childhood that paths are set for what we will become. Mukesh Sharma hails from a rural, agricultural village in Rajasthan, India. His Father is a craftsman who fixed and mended farm machinery and understood the working parts in the processes. Sharma followed in his Father’s footsteps, as is often the case in Indian families, but his was not the machines of the fields but the presses of the printing studio. Like his Father, Mukesh Sharma is fascinated with understanding how things work and how he can manipulate the metal in his hands. It is not surprising then that his medium of choice is printing. One of the most physically challenging of all the practices, it can often be physically challenging as well as technical and detailed. In his youth, Sharma would draw with stones on walls and floors. He was lucky his family encouraged this and he is grateful for his early art-training at the Jaipur School of Art but it was at the Baroda Art Department that he was introduced to the great printing traditions of Jyoti Bhatt...

Unknown - from Otage et Rouge series
Located in San Francisco, CA
Artist: James Coignard – French (1925-2008) Title: Unknown – From Otage et Rouge series Year: Circa 1980 Medium: Carborundum etching on Moulin de Larroque paper with applied collage and threaded twine Sight size: 40 x 26 inches (101.5 x 66 cm) Signature: Signed lower right Edition: 50. This one: 38/50 Condition: Good This print is on very thick hand made paper that is particularly well suited to the carborundum collagraph process. The print has sculptural elements made possible through the paper and the process. The bottle is a collage element. It has some form of printing and it has been threaded with twine. The print is in good condition. It has a highly worked and irregular surface. These are aspects of the printing process and the paper itself. There are several light horizontal creases on the left and right edges, 1 to 2" in length that appear to be part of the printing process. That said, I cannot detect any flaws. The print is in good condition. I have included a short description of the printing process at the end of this description. James Coignard, painter, ceramist, sculptor and etcher, was born in Tours in 1925. At the age of 23 and after a brief career in the French administration, he discovered the landscapes of the French Riviera and decided to study at Arts décoratifs in Nice. Four years later, he quit his job at the administration to commit himself entirely to his artistic career. The encounter with Paul Hervieu in 1950 was decisive. His collaboration with gallery Hervieu made him known in artistic circles, nationally and internationally and then particularly in Scandinavia. At the beginning of his career, art critics labeled James Coignard as a member of Ecole de Paris. Soon, his painting and ceramic distanced themselves from those of his colleagues and he set out in his own creative direction. At the beginning of the sixties, he started to work with glass but the technical turning point occurred in 1968 when his friend Henri Goetz discovered a new etching technique, using carborundum. Etching then became central in his work. At the same time, his career took off internationally. He traveled a lot, especially to Sweden and USA where he lived for a few years. In 1978, James Coignard participated in the creation of the etching studio Pasnic, with which he started a long collaboration. During the eighties, he shared his time between Paris and the French Riviera and took an interest in artist’s books and publishing issues. He exhibited now all over the world, and was acknowledged as one of the greatest painter-etchers of his time. Until his death in 2008, James Coignard was a prolific painter, sculptor and etcher. He left behind an immense body of work.
