Knox Martin was born in 1923 in Barranquilla, Colombia. He was the son of the aviator, painter, and poet William Knox Martin, the first man to fly over the Andes Mountains. The work is made on a solid panel of marine plywood, the background finished in a white acrylic pour. The helmet is executed in embossed, high-relief gilding, using 23.5-carat gold leaf, 22-carat rose gold leaf, 23-carat red gold leaf and platinum leaf. The choice of high-carat metals is deliberate: gold below 22 carats will tarnish over time, and platinum leaf is used in place of white gold for the same reason.
