Korean Abstract Minimalist Gouache Painting LA Woman Artist MInimalism

By Jae Hahn

Located in Surfside, FL

Jae Hahn is a Korean-born artist living in Los Angeles. Known for abstraction and minimalism. She graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree majoring in painting at UCLA in 1977. She spent her first 20 formative years in Korea, and the following 30 years in Los Angeles. Hahn’s search to find her own identity and cultural heritage resulted in studying Oriental philosophy, but more specifically, Taoism and Zen Buddhism. She later focused on figure painting, consolidating what she learned from all schools of masters. The first was about structure from cubism. Next were the dynamic color studies of Matisse, and third, the freedom of spontaneous gestural strokes found in Abstract Expressionism. During the late 1990’s, Hahn experienced her own Renaissance. Her paintings took on a new life, with more activity and interlocking positive and negative space, and varying textures (“folding”) and irregular shapes. This resulted in the Unfoldings series, which encompasses Hahn’s artistic attributes of color and form, surface layered depth of field, sculpture, geometry and structure. Jae's paintings are painted in varied tones of a single colour, and usually appear in the form of diptych, triptych or polyptych. The contents are patterns formed by lines such as a triangle, a diagonal, a cross or simply a horizontal line. Simplicity is indeed a quality that the artist intends to convey through her art. Following in the tradition of Donald Judd, John McCracken, Agnes Martin, Dan Flavin and Robert Morris, Her work tends towards a luminous minimalist style. She has showed at Kelley Roy gallery alongside John Henry, Dolly Moreno and Sebastian Spreng. She has also shown at Seth Jason Beitler Gallery in Miami. Busy Blue (Abstract Checkered Pattern Gouache and Collage on Paper)

By Donise English

Located in Hudson, NY

Donise English Busy Blue, 2020 14" X 17" gouache and collage on paper This abstract geometric composition on paper features a playful geometric motif that is inspired by the artist's interest in architecture and blueprint drawings. The geometric forms are made in a more painterly, gestural manner rather than with a hard edge. Paint is not heavily built up upon the surface but it certainly exhibits a tactile quality which is characteristic of the artist's aesthetic. English's work celebrates the quirky, unexpected qualities of shapes and colors. About the artist: Donise English is a Poughkeepsie-based artist who received her MFA from Bard College and is currently a Professor of Studio Art at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. Artist Statement: I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure. Resume: EDUCATION Master of Fine Arts in Painting Bard College 1986 Bachelor of Science in Art History State University College at New Paltz 1977 Additional Study: New York Studio School (Drawing Marathons) Columbia University, School of Architecture Women’s Studio Workshop TEACHING Professor of Studio Art, Department of Art and Art History, Marist College, Poughkeepsie,NY Coordinator, Interior Design Program, Florence, Italy campus 1992-present AWARDS Finalist, “Saatchi Showdown” 2010 Invitational Award for Outstanding Contemporary Talent, University of Bridgeport, CT 2000 Purchase Prize, “11th National Juried Exhibition” College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Baltimore 1999 First Prize, “Women in the Visual Arts ‘95” Erector Square Gallery, New Haven, CT 1995 Joseph A. He completed noteworthy set designs and costumes for numerous international operatic and ballet productions, including those at the Royal Danish Ballet, the Royal Ballet of Great Britain, the Paris Opera, the Dance Theater of Harlem, the Ruth Page International Ballet, the Civic Ballet of Chicago, the Chicago Opera Ballet and the Lyric Opera of Chicago, among others. "Abstract Composition" by Roger Herson (French 1922-2008) signed lower right hand-side, gouache painting on thin card, unframed painting: 20 x 14 inches Superb original abstract painting by the very well listed French abstract and surrealist artist, Roger Herson (1922-2008). The painting has excellent provenance, having come from the artists estate in northern France. Roger Herson (1922-2008) was a French abstract, cubist and surrealist painter from Rouen, France. Influenced by Picasso, Braque and Léger, he infuses the canvas with a frenzied and tonic movement, a rigorous construction and a personal graphic power. Painter of woman, desire and fantasies, Herson draws his inspiration from the verve and surrealist movement inspired by Georgio de Chirico...

Still Life with Lamp Cups and Flowers French Modernist Gouache

Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire

Title: Still Life with Lamp Cups and Flowers French Modernist Gouache Guy Nicod (French 1923 - 2021) Gouache on artist paper, unframed Size: 23.25 x 17.5 inches (height x width) Provenance: Artists estate, France Condition: good overall with light edge wear and minor handling marks to the paper edges, commensurate with age, there is a small tear to the bottom edge Description: A striking and complex modernist still life by French painter Guy Nicod, this richly layered gouache on paper reveals the artist’s fascination with light, reflection, and form. The composition centres on a tabletop arrangement of domestic objects—a green cup, amber jug, and round lampshade or glass dome—arranged against a deep, moody background of indigo, umber, and crimson. Beneath the main grouping, a smaller vignette of fruit, garlic bulbs, and a dish adds texture and warmth, grounding the composition in a sense of everyday intimacy. Nicod’s expressive brushwork and glowing colour palette are hallmarks of his post-war French modernist style. Vivid yellows, reds, and turquoise tones illuminate the darker backdrop, creating an almost theatrical play of light reminiscent of Georges Braque’s late still lifes and the decorative vitality of École de Paris painting...
