Barbizon School Landscape, The Poplar Trees, Late 19th Century Oil on Wood Panel
Located in Cotignac, FR
Late 19th Century French Barbizon School oil on wood panel of poplar trees in a landscape by Richard. The painting is signed bottom left. The painting is on a quality chamfered panel. A very charming, almost impressionist, rendition of a line of iconic French trees in a landscape. Before them an earth drive has been ploughed up by the wheels of passing carts and horses. Richard has created a wonderful perspective that draws us in to the painting and he has created a contrast between the strong greens of the trees and fields against the whites and blues of the sky. The painting is reminiscent of the works of Monet from the 1890s. to whom the poplar trees were a continuing inspiration. The Barbizon school of painters was part of an art movement towards Realism in art, which arose in the context of the dominant Romantic Movement of the time. The Barbizon school was active roughly from 1830 through 1870. It takes its name from the village of Barbizon, France, on the edge of the Forest of Fontainebleau, where many of the artists gathered. Most of their works were landscape paintings, but several of them also painted landscapes with farmworkers, and genre scenes of village life. Some of the most prominent features of this school are its tonal qualities, colour, loose brushwork, and softness of form. The leaders of the Barbizon school were: Théodore Rousseau, Charles-François Daubigny, Jules Dupré, Constant Troyon, Charles Jacque, and Narcisse Virgilio Díaz. Jean-François Millet lived in Barbizon from 1849, but his interest in figures with a landscape backdrop sets him rather apart from the others. Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot was the earliest on the scene, first painting in the forest in 1829, but his work has a poetic and literary quality which sets him somewhat apart. Other artists associated with the school, often pupils of the main group, include: Henri Harpignies, Albert Charpin, François-Louis Français and Émile van Marcke. In 1824 the Salon de Paris exhibited works of John Constable, an English painter. His rural scenes influenced some of the younger artists of the time, moving them to abandon formalism and to draw inspiration directly from nature. Natural scenes became the subjects of their paintings rather than mere backdrops to dramatic events. During the Revolutions of 1848 artists gathered at Barbizon to follow Constable's ideas, making nature the subject of their paintings. The French landscape became a major theme of the Barbizon painters. Millet extended the idea from landscape to figures — peasant figures, scenes of peasant life, and work in the fields. In The Gleaners (1857), for example, Millet portrays three peasant women working at the harvest. Gleaners are poor people who are permitted to gather the remains after the owners of the field complete the main harvest. The owners (portrayed as wealthy) and their laborers are seen in the back of the painting. Millet shifted the focus and the subject matter from the rich and prominent to those at the bottom of the social ladders. To emphasize their anonymity and marginalized position, he hid their faces. The women's bowed bodies represent their everyday hard work. In the spring of 1829, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot came to Barbizon to paint in the Forest of Fontainebleau, he had first painted in the forest at Chailly in 1822. He returned to Barbizon in the autumn of 1830 and in the summer of 1831, where he made drawings and oil studies, from which he made a painting intended for the Salon of 1830; "View of the Forest of Fontainebleau'" (now in the National Gallery in Washington) and, for the salon of 1831, another "View of the Forest of Fontainebleau"'. While there he met the members of the Barbizon school: Théodore Rousseau, Paul Huet, Constant Troyon, Jean-François Millet, and the young Charles-François Daubigny. During the late 1860s, the Barbizon painters attracted the attention of a younger generation of French artists studying in Paris. Several of those artists visited Fontainebleau Forest to paint the landscape, including Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley and Frédéric Bazille. In the 1870s those artists, among others, developed the art movement called Impressionism and practiced 'plein air' painting. In contrast, the main members of the school made drawings and sketches on the spot, but painted back in their studios. The Post-Impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh studied and copied several of the Barbizon painters as well, including 21 copies of paintings by Millet. He copied Millet more than any other artist. He also did three paintings in Daubigny's Garden. The Barbizon painters also had a profound impact on landscape painting in the United States. This included the development of the American Barbizon school by William Morris Hunt. Several artists who were also in, or contemporary to, the Hudson River School studied Barbizon paintings for their loose brushwork and emotional impact. A notable example is George Inness, who sought to emulate the works of Rousseau. Paintings from the Barbizon school also influenced landscape painting in California. The artist Percy Gray...

Painted Wood Tavolette Book Cover Binding The Biccherna Aesthetic Siena Tuscany
Located in Sutton Poyntz, Dorset
Icilio Federico Joni. Italian ( b.1866 - d.1946 ). Painted Gesso, Gilt & Wood Tavolette Book Cover Binding In The Sienese Biccherna Aesthetic. Book Cover size 11 inches x 8.1 inches ( 28cm x 20.5cm ). Frame size 16 inches x 13 inches ( 40.5cm x 33cm ). Available for sale; this painted gesso and gilt “tavolette” wooden book cover in the Biccherna aesthetic is by Icilio Federico Joni. The book cover is mounted and supplied in a contemporary black Tulip Wood frame (which is shown in these photographs) which is glazed with non-reflective Tru Vue UltraVue® UV70 glass. The wooden book cover is curved and float mounted giving a wonderful 3D depth to its presentation. The gesso and painted surfaces have benefitted from professional restoration which was performed on our instruction, supervision and approval. This antique book cover is in very good condition, commensurate with its age. The frame presentation is new and in excellent condition. Combined, it wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The story of these panels and of their artist is fascinating, and begins in 13th century Siena: The Biccherna was the person who held the position of Magistrate of Chancellery of Finance from the 13th to the 14th century for the republic and the city of Siena, in the Tuscany region of Italy. The records of that office were very important because Siena was one of the earliest and most significant banking centres in Italy, and indeed in Europe. It became the fashion to keep banking and taxation records of the region in large books with painted leather covers. These were originally made from wood and leather. In the competition to make these ever more prestigious the bindings and panels on the front and rear of the books were painted by the major artists of the day, such as Giovanni di Paolo. Many of these mainly secular covers are displayed in the Archives of the State of Siena located in the Palazzo Piccolmini. The Gothic Revival of the 19th century occurred partly as a reaction against the progress of industrialisation in Europe generally. It was however greatly affected by the unification of Italy in the second half of the 19th century. This led to the closure and downsizing of many religious institutions, which resulted in the dispersal of thousands of works of art dating from the Middle Ages and early Renaissance. Many aristocratic and bourgeois families struggled to pay debts or simply to make ends meet and so they sold off their private collections and family heirlooms. There was then an influx of goods into the antiques market which provided a great deal of work for Italy’s restorers and craftsmen, since many of these pieces were in need of cleaning, repair and, in keeping with the interventionist tastes of the times, radical restoration, before they could be sold on, often to foreign buyers. These early Italian works became so fashionable that demand soon outstripped supply. This in turn gave rise to a new type of artist-craftsman capable of turning out from scratch increasingly convincing reproductions, imitations and out-and-out fakes. Siena naturally became the epicentre of this thriving cottage industry because of the extraordinary continuity there in traditional craft skills. This technical expertise had been handed down from generation to generation, and it was perhaps inevitable that a number of artists with real talent, the flair of commerce and a genuine love and understanding of antique Sienese art should adapt their skills to these new market conditions. Among these artists were Igino Gottardi, Alceo Dossena, Fulvio Corsini, Umberto Giunti...

French Naive, Fauvist Oil on Panel Painting "Le Petit Clocher" Michel Loeb
Located in Surfside, FL
Michel Loeb (French, 1931- ) "Le Petit Clocher" Oil on Panel Painting Frame: 22.5" X 26" Image: 14.5" X 17.75" Hand signed bottom left Oil on board Fauve painting of a French countryside scene with trees, farmers and houses. Michel Loeb, 1930- painter, was born in Saint-Cloud. Lives and works in Luberon. Art naïf. Pointillist, Fauvist, Surrealist, Dadai artist, unclassifiable, highly original, unique art. His works radiate a light, a love of colors, of the absurd, of the funny, of the tender and of the poetic. French Naive art. Galerie Felix Vercel showed his work. Whether in color or black & white, in painting, sculpture or a lithograph print, the world of Michel Loeb is a poetic, joyful and exuberant paradise, where humor and fantasy are never far away. Extravagant works that sparkle like their iconoclastic author whose titles often say a lot. Each work is executed with great attention to detail, often under the magnifying glass, by this former jeweler, including its very large formats. Michel Loeb has drawn parallels to his masters of painting, facetious but always majestic winks and the desire for paintings in the style of Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Edward Hopper, Hokusai. Michel Loeb is a painter born in Saint-Cloud. He first trained as a jeweler and diamond dealer like his father and painted as an amateur. He devoted himself to painting from 1970, after his meeting with the famous art dealer Félix Vercel, who then took him under contract and exhibited him in Paris, New York and Tokyo. Galerie Felix Vercel in Paris (Avenue Matignon) and New York (Madison Avenue) showed artists as Pablo Picasso, Fernand Leger, Armand Guillaumin, Maurice Utrillo and Claude Venard. He is part of School of Paris artists that included Marcel Cosson, Jean Jansem, Claude Salomon, Michel Kouliche, Bernard Buffet, Bernard Lorjou, Jean Dufy, and others. Naive art was then in fashion and his work enjoyed great success; he has prepared no less than one exhibition per year since this period. Recently he had the opportunity to present his work in Provence, Oslo or Shanghai. Since 1988, he has settled in Oppède, in the Luberon, among vineyards, scrubland and olive groves where he draws his inspiration. His work is simimilar in its childish naive appeal and is reminiscent of Henri Maik and Gustavo Novoa. In the French tradition of Séraphine de Senlis, Ferdinand Cheval, Henri Rousseau, Louis Vivin...
