Divine Dragon, Duanxi Songkeng Inkstone
Divine Dragon, Duanxi Songkeng Inkstone

Divine Dragon, Duanxi Songkeng Inkstone

Located in Taichung, TW

The Divine Dragon Inkstone was carved in 2012 by master craftsman Wei Ming Huang, using stone from Songkeng, one of the four famous Duanxi quarries. Discovered and mined since the Northern Song dynasty, Songkeng stone is known for its dense, smooth texture and distinctive features such as golden star-like specks, “fire spots,” and the prized “coin fire” patterns. With a high mica content, it produces ink of exceptional quality, making it highly valued for carved inkstones. This piece reveals natural star-like “stone eyes” across the surface, resembling a night sky. A dragon, executed in high and openwork relief, emerges among clouds, evoking the majestic vision of a divine dragon soaring through the heavens. Symbolizing wisdom, power, and auspicious protection, the work harmonizes nature and artistry. Wei Ming Huang, from Zhaoqing, Guangdong, has devoted over twenty years to Duan inkstone...

Boris Lovet-Lorski Limestone Art Deco Head, circa 1930

Boris Lovet-Lorski Limestone Art Deco Head, circa 1930

By Boris Lovet-Lorski

Located in New York, NY

White stone head in the art deco style. Born in Lithuania at the end of the nineteenth century, Boris Lovet-Lorski studied art at the Imperial Academy of Art in St. Petersburg before working briefly as an architect. He immigrated to New York in 1920 and became an American citizen five years later. His sculptures epitomize the ideals of the Art Deco decades: comprised of sleek lines and smooth surfaces, the streamlined compositions reflect the new technological forms of the machine age. Despite their modernist treatment, Lovet-Lorski’s elegant, stylized figures reference both ancient and classical sources and are characterized by a universal and serene sensibility. Concentrating on figural busts, familial groups, and standing female nudes as his subject matter, the artist rendered them in a variety of media. The materials range from the traditional bronze and marble to exotic woods and unusual stones; each is carefully selected so that its surface texture and color contribute to the emotive aura of the work. Carved out of a block of limestone, Untitled (Head) depicts a female visage nearly androgynous in its idealization. The delicate features of her face, the long, straight nose, thin pursed lips and high cheekbones, are made even more diminutive by the massive bulk of the stone that serves as their backdrop. The prominent widow’s peak of her hairline and the strong arch of her brow, two of Lovet-Lorski’s most distinctive characteristics, are elongated to accentuate the linear rhythms of the composition. The layers of her hair are delineated by stepped striations reminiscent of archaic precedents, which meld into structural columns and connect the form architecturally to the stone’s mass. Unlike the majority of Lovet-Lorski’s sculptures, in which the heads of the figures are tilted to the side or downward to convey a pensive mood, the woman in Untitled (Head) looks straight ahead. Her frontal positioning gives the composition a nearly perfect symmetry, in turn endowing the work with a still, eternal sensibility. The notched surface of the surrounding limestone stands in sharp contrast to the smoothness of her skin. In the twenties, the artist tended to finish his sculptures to a highly polished degree of refinement, but in the thirties he began to experiment with contrasts of texture and the aesthetic of the fragment. In this respect, the work is vaguely evocative of Egyptian funerary sculptures, in which the figures were carved with an eye for three-dimensionality but were left intact in a larger piece of stone to give them physical durability and permanence. Embodying classical ideals of stoicism and universal beauty, the sculpture ultimately exudes a surface allure that is difficult to resist. A similar example of this approach can be seen in the 1937 sculpture Diana, which resides in the permanent collection of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C. Carved from a piece of black Belgian marble, the work is a stylized bust of the Greek goddess Diana...

Auspicious Dragon, Duanxi Kengziyan Inkstone
Auspicious Dragon, Duanxi Kengziyan Inkstone

Auspicious Dragon, Duanxi Kengziyan Inkstone

Located in Taichung, TW

Carved from Duanxi Kengziyan stone, prized for its fine and dense texture that produces smooth ink without harming the brush, this inkstone follows the natural shape of the stone to form the pool. At the water inlet, a high-relief dragon surges through clouds and waves, with the interplay of cloud and water rendered in both intaglio and relief to create an open composition. The dragon symbolizes auspiciousness and protection, echoing the scholar’s tradition of “nurturing the brush and carrying the Way through objects.” Han jing Mo’s style achieves a balance between meticulous precision and freehand expressiveness, skillfully integrating natural stone colors, skins, and fissures into the design so that material and imagery resonate as one. Master craftsman Han jing Mo, from Zhaoqing, Guangdong, has devoted more than twenty years to Duan inkstone...

'Family' original signed Shona stone sculpture by Wonder Mazhindu Bumhira

By Wonder Mazhindu Bumhira

Located in Milwaukee, WI

'Family' is an original stone sculpture signed by Zimbabwean artist Wonder Mazhindu Bumhira. The composition is an example of the family groupings, with each figure arranged as though they were a flower in a bouquet, that are so desired from Shona sculptors. Though the figures are ambiguous and stylized, the figures are arranged using a hierarchy of scale: the matriarch (perhaps a grandmother) towers over the other members of her family, with her children and grandchildren below. Thusly, sculptures like this present a vision of family structure and unity. opal stone (serpentine) 36 x 13.5 x 11 inches signed 'W. Maz' along base Overall good condition. A 1:28 scale reproduction of the original statue in Piazza Affari in Milan, L.O.V.E. stands for Libertà, Odio, Vendetta, Eternità and is an anti-fascist statement. Maurizio Cattelan L.O.V. E. White 2014 Concrete sculpture 40 × 18 × 18 cm (15.7 × 7.1 × 7.1 in) Stamped by artist's estate Edition of 200 In mint condition With original packaging and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity The statue, which bears the title of L.O.V.E., stands for Libertà, Odio, Vendetta, Eternità (Freedom, Hate, Vengeance, Eternity),was created in 2010 to stay in Piazza Affari (business district) in Milan. The artist himself states that the statue is an anti-fascist statement, transforming Italy’s Fascist hand salute from the 1930s by cutting off the fingers and mutilating the hand. The fingers, except the medium one, are not flexed but cut off. Nevertheless the impression is an unambiguous “fuck you” to the world of bankers and CEOs.This edition, 1:28 scale reproductions of the original statue, was released by Seletti in May 2014 and is made of concrete painted white. “My ideas are all the same but look different.„ —Maurizio Cattelan ABOUT THE ARTIST Born in Padua, Italy, in 1960, Cattelan has no formal training and considers himself an “art worker” rather than an artist.
