bauxite, sheet metals, shale, oxides, acrylic paints Dan Corbin's sculptures are a convergence of conceptualism and the human figure, illuminating what it feels like to be alive during current times, with all its beauty, complexity, contradictions, and possibilities. The artist’s sculptures address issues of contemporary society - materialism, industrialization and cultural change - while simultaneously referring to a wide range of human emotions. His sculptures lift the spirit while questioning what it is to be human. In Corbin’s archetype of man, intellect and soul are separate from the body. Armless, headless, anonymous cores can now be broken down to the smallest units, analyzed, engineered, beautified, and commodified. Corbin’s articulation of figurative sculpture takes iconography of the present and embeds it in the surface of his sculptures. He calls these miniature time capsules ‘inclusions’. Objects like cosmetic bottles, action figures, dolls, and feeder fish are sealed in resin and strategically embedded throughout the body. With these ‘inclusions’ the figure becomes a technologically enhanced vessel. The human body is no longer a container for a perfect being, handed down by god or evolution, but an aesthetically enhanced harbinger of a new era. In combination with the ‘inclusions’ Corbin uses a multitude of industrial materials, emphasizing the intrinsic value and physical properties of each. Each surface becomes fully charged with content, primed for multiple interpretations. Acrylic paints, oil paints, and gold leaf My paintings explore the relationship between elements such as the skies, the oceans, the natural environment such as the formation of rocks, cliffs, and weathered material. In my work, I aim to bring together certain properties of each of these elements to create an experience and understanding of the world and the contrasting relationships between each of these ideas. The use of texture in my work is formed using material which has been subjected to the forces of the weather, and I love to use ‘untouched’ and ‘natural’ material in my work to form the basis of all my paintings. It is the idea of bringing together a number of natural materials in my work that inspires me. The contrast between elements such as the roughness of the texture, the smoothness of the ink or paint. and the reflection of the metallics brings about a composition and structure that is unique. The impact of the weather, space, and seasons has been important in determining the structure of each of the paintings and the way the different elements and materials react to one another. The use of ink in my work has been a work in progress that I have been experimenting with over the past year. The use of this new medium has proved to be invaluable to the message and direction that I would like my work to take. On each of the works, I manipulate the Ink using air from my mouth as I want to form a stronger relationship with the canvas and the way that the ink Is manipulated.
