By Calvin Lai

Located in Denver, CO

Calvin Lai's (US based) "A Candid Moment" is an original, handmade oil painting that depicts a female portrait with her face in profile and contrasted with a blue background. The painting is framed, with overall dimensions of 16 x 13 inches, Artist Bio: Calvin Lai's art is a mixture of medicine, meditation, and personal growth. He found early on that drawing was something he loved, and to make a picture appear lifelike became his goal. Through constantly drawing, his work began to breath, and his fascination with value and perspective led Calvin to become a student of realism. Eventually he moved from where he grew up in Los Angeles to San Francisco. There he studied drawing and printmaking at San Francisco State University. In 2008, he enrolled in the Academy of Art for illustration, but began painting instead. He found that he preferred the fine arts over commercial illustration...

"Audrey on Green" Mixed Media Figurative Collage Composition on Panel Board

By Jon Davenport

Located in New York, NY

This piece depicts a colorful collage composition portrait of Audrey Hepburn, as Jon Davenport explores the process of deconstructing iconic imagery from the past and present. Davenport start’s out with photos of his paint-stained studio floor and collages in articles/advertising from an array of vintage magazines collected over the years; plus any other interesting stuff captured on his travels. He then transfers the images to a panel board, layering them on with gel medium, together with strokes, splashes, drips, and splats of paint. Once it's dry, another layer of gel medium is poured on to give it a melting effect. After it drys off again, another layer of paint is added to embellish a few areas and to accentuate or fade out certain aspects. And then, he finally adds a coat of polyurethane for protection and making the colors pop. This unique work is executed on a wood panel board and comes ready to be displayed with hanging wire on verso, signed by the artist lower right. Art measures 36 x 24 inches From biology student to owning and running a creative agency in London to a career as a fine artist, life has taken Jon Davenport on a rewarding and unconventional journey. Despite his scientific beginnings, he’s always had a strong artistic streak weaving its way through his different career paths. Growing up in Ipswich, UK, Jon was always an avid drawer, and could often be found with a pencil and paper in hand. With the arrival of his first computer, he embraced the new frontier of digital art and had work published in one of those early computer magazines. His creative urges took a backseat to get a biology degree at Brunel University in London. It was afterward, in his first job working at the Archant newspaper group in Ipswich, that he quickly progressed from plate maker to becoming an integral member of the art studio. It was during this time that he taught himself photoshop, desktop publishing, and graphic & web design. After a few years, he set up a design agency, and eventually went full time and moved to London. This proved to be a successful move, working for a number of clients such as Nike and Virgin, and gaining praise from the likes of Richard Branson and Tony Blair. It wasn’t until Jon moved to the USA to marry his wife, Atlanta artist Christy Kinard...

Blue (Sepia Toned Figurative Oil Painting of Boys on Bikes with Blue Ball)

By Carl Grauer

Located in Hudson, NY

Blue (Sepia Toned Figurative Oil Painting of Boys on Bikes with Blue Ball) Contemporary figurative painting based on a 1960's photograph, plays deeply on feelings of nostalgia and identity. oil on wood panel 20 x 20 x 2 inches Carl Grauer’s 'Blue' plays with the tension between memories, the “return to home”, and the actual experienced past through the renderings of the family unit. Inspired by images on found slides or old family photos, Grauer provokes mixed responses of delight and sadness, reminding us that unlike space, time cannot be returned. Grauer paints 'Blue' in black and white, sepia tones, and blue oil paint on wood to capture the nostalgia of a vintage 1950's photograph. Two young children ride bicycles in a charming landscape while one child holds a big blue ball. The blue ball beautifully contrasts with the sepia toned landscape. The brushstrokes are smooth, with little texture built upon the surface. About the work: Recollections, a series that plays with the tension between memories, the “return to home”, and the actual experienced past, is an idea that I explore through the renderings of the family unit. Nostalgia comes from the Greek word nostos, meaning “to return to home” and algos, meaning “pain”. Before the rise of pathological anatomy and bacteriology made it less credible, medically; nostalgia was considered a “disorder of the imagination. Through time, nostalgia’s meaning became a more generalized reaction to the sad fact that, unlike space, time cannot be returned. I initially began with source imagery of found slides and photos of people I find at flea markets, second hand stores or from my own family’s collection. I take the source imagery and change elements to signify specific moments that could be seen as memories that are remembered or forgotten. I aim to represent nostalgic scenes that may relay a tension, sorrow or humor that could be constructed memories or actual experienced events. The exact narrative may be forgotten or unknown, but the complex projection of an idealized story that I find intriguing may serve to reflect a feeling or memory for another person. "Cloud Formation" acrylic on canvas mounted on wood panel

Located in West Hollywood, CA

Bret Hansen originally from Baltimore, Maryland is a painter and graphic designer based in Los Angeles, California. His design career spans art direction roles in publishing, branding and advertising at firms in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. His bold, dynamic designs can be seen in everything from album covers to advertising campaigns. Bret received his MFA in design from Virginia Commonwealth University and later taught design courses at Pratt Institute’s graduate program in Manhattan. Bret’s paintings blend expression with a graphic design sensibility and explore themes of alienation, disorientation, authenticity and hope. Incorporating a graphic design sensibility, the artist’s approach in his painting emphasizes clean lines, geometric shapes, and a vibrant, synthetic palette. Elements like artificial paint drips and pixellated stars form a visual language that bridges a digital aesthetic with painterly expression. Bret’s canvases reflect our struggle to find footing in a world turned upside down and our persistent, sometimes defiant, drive to seek out light and balance amid chaos. Bret’s work is a testament to his ability to evoke emotion and provoke thought through his art. His paintings serve as a mirror to the complexities of the human experience, capturing the essence of our society's constant evolution and the individual journeys we all embark on. "Bustling Alley at Dusk" Oil Painting

By Christopher Clark

Located in Denver, CO

Christopher Clark's (US based) "Bustling Alley at Dusk" is an original, handmade oil painting that depicts a dreamy cityscape that features turn of the century buildings lining an alley where throngs of people gather at cafes and walk past in the light of the setting sun. Bio/artist statement: Christopher has been an artist since early childhood, when he would watch Bob Ross on PBS and mimic the famed oil painter’s art with crayons. He considers himself a self-educated artist, with his studies ranging from personal training with contemporary masters, to classical academic art technique, with much inspiration from 19th Century art and the Impressionist Movement. Christopher lived in Italy for a time, immersing himself in Italian culture and art, which continues to influence his painting.
