Unforgettable
Located in New York, NY
The art of Philip Wittmann is founded on signals. For him, signs serve as a bridge between abstraction, reality and writing, too. When he was 26 years old, he began painting as a hobbyist using 'pure' abstraction. However, he believed his work lacked a solid foundation upon which to grow. He discovered a book on the origins of the Chinese alphabet, which origins are essentially signs, in 2008 while taking a calligraphy class. The 26 letters of our Latin alphabet are less pictorial than the Chinese characters as we know them now. He discovered that pictorial representation is more prevalent when examining the origins of alphabets—all alphabets, in fact—because there is frequently a similarity between the sign's true meaning and what it is meant to represent. For instance, the symbol for a turtle in the original Chinese script resembles a turtle. Wittmann loves signs as they leave room for interpretation. For instance, if one writes “the sky is blue”, one will make for themself a mental representation of a blue sky, even if each one-off us will probably have some nuance in our own mental representation of that blue sky. On the other hand, a sign can...

Canopic Prestidigitation
Located in Santa Fe, NM
Over the course of her prolific and radical career, Nancy Graves became a master of translating the primary data of soft science disciplines such as archaeology and anthropology into empirically informed, expressive works, such as "Canopic Prestidigitation." A large-scale, 23-color lithograph, Canopic Prestidigitation is as technically masterful as it is conceptually layered. Graves combines the Egyptian visual lexicon of the afterlife and allusions to European Renaissance masterworks to catalyze heuristic understandings of cross-cultural communication—Figures rendered in the hybridized profile-portrait style of Egyptian hieroglyphs float through a swirling and subtle maze of neo-classical architectural suggestions, while a disembodied hand reminiscent of Michelangelo’s "The Creation of Adam" reaches out through a frothing red portal. A cast-paper representation of Horus perches in the bottom right corner of the work, a nod to the symbolic language of the print and Graves’ multi-disciplined artistic approach. When read together, the elements of Canopic Prestidigitation become an artistic interpretation of the intangible qualities of social science...

Located in Natick, MA
Monica DeSalvo’s “Clark Field Tried Calling Mum” is a 16 x 12 inch minimalist collage on a black and white acrylic monotype with irregular edges and a faded, uneven texture. A Xerox-like appearance is created from ghost prints in shades of gray. An industrial red abstract object hovers over a house, and graphic leaf shapes fan out, overlapping impressions of squares from spiral notebook paper. The monotype was created using a Gelli plate...

La Puerta Negra
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Danny Brown is a first-generation American urban artist born in Los Angeles. His parents relocated their family from Oaxaca, Mexico in search of opportunity in the United States. Danny Brown’s artworks allocate an intrinsic connection between himself and the diverse communities occupying Los Angeles. Brown combines art history, streetwear trends, and pop art symbolism to create a signature style with a soft and fun, yet edgy character. This original acrylic, oil pastel, watercolor, and ink artwork on paper measures 13 inches square. This artwork is not framed. This painting is signed by Brown on the back. Convenient local Los Angeles area shipping. Affordable Continental U.S. and International shipping also available. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included. Danny Brown uses his interest in fashion as well as his knowledge of color, design, and culture as inspiration for his paintings. The loss of friends to violence and incarceration, combined with the loss of a family member to gang violence pushed Brown to use art as a source of therapy and to project a positive inspiring image for his community. Brown’s art coalesces youth culture, art history, fashion and American consumerism and melds them all to create his unique style. Instantly relatable and recognizable, his cathartic paintings represent contemporary issues as well as a demographic that is traditionally underrepresented in fine art. His works speak to young Americans and inspire a whole new generation of art collectors and admirers. Since 2016, Daniel Brown...

Stanley Boxer Mixed Media Abstract Expressionist Painting on Paper, Gold
Located in Surfside, FL
Abstract, 1987 Hand signed and dated verso Not sure of technique. this might be a monotype or monoprint with hand painting. The handmade paper is cut somewhat irregularly as per the artists intentions. Stanley Boxer (1926-May 8, 2000) was an American abstract expressionist artist best known for thickly painted abstract works of art. He was also an accomplished sculptor and printmaker. He received awards from the Guggenheim Fellowship and the National Endowment for the Arts. Boxer was born in New York City, and began his formal education after World War II, when he left the Navy and studied at the Art Students League of New York. He drew, painted, made prints, and sculpted. His work was recognized by art critic Clement Greenberg, who categorized him as a color field painter, A group that included Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still, and Mark Rothko and was a form of Abstract Expressionism and later included Helen Frankenthaler, Ad Reinhardt, Kenneth Noland, Gene Davis, Jules Olitski, Raymond Parker and Morris Louis. Boxer himself was adamant in rejecting this stylistic label. Over the years, he remained loyal to the materially dense abstract mode on which his reputation rested.. Art critic Grace Glueck wrote "Never part of a movement or trend, though obviously steeped in the language of Modernism, the abstract painter Stanley Boxer was a superb manipulator of surfaces, intensely bonding texture and color." In 1953 Boxer had his first solo exhibition of paintings in New York City, and showed regularly thereafter until his death. His paintings and sculpture were represented in New York City during the late 1960s through 1974 by the Tibor de Nagy Gallery, then by the André Emmerich Gallery from 1975 until 1993, and finally by Salander-O'Reilly Galleries until its demise in 2007. Richard Waller...
