In James' paintings, he explores how uncertainty can lead to meaning and understanding. How harmony can be experienced even within tension and chaos and how the recognizable can rise out of purely abstract form. In his abstract paintings he responds to these phenomena by creating contemporary icons – works meant to encourage contemplation and meditation.
James' more recent works have evolved from the romantic representational ideal into the symbolic, abstract archetype. He comes from a classical background inspired by the great romantic landscape painters such as Turner, Lorrain, Friedrich and Moran, his recent work is more influenced by the work of artists like Klee, Miro, Rothko, Pollock, Riley and Richter.
James creates complex abstractions layered in familiarity and veiled in mysteriousness. The unorthodox methods he uses to apply and move oil paint allow him to create compositions that are formally beautiful – infused with tension and drama but also expressive of the spiritual, symbolic, mysterious and eternal. This modern abstract encaustic painting by Allyson Levy is made with Northern Sea Oats and green encaustic, sealed with a layer of neutral wax on a wood panel. The artist begins by finding the organic material in her 4-acre garden in upstate New York which she then arranges and embeds with encaustic on a wooden panel. The brown, earth toned sea oats are laid in a linear pattern on a wood panel with a surface of green encaustic and then sealed with clear wax. The encaustic wraps around to the sides of the panel, revealing some bumps and downward drips, accumulated during the natural drying process. The piece is lightweight and hangs on one d-ring.

After moving to the rural town of Stone Ridge, NY seventeen years ago and starting a 4-acre botanical garden with her husband, mixed media artist, Allyson Levy, has found endless inspiration in the plant kingdom that surrounds her. The garden itself, named “Hortus Conclusus”, consisting of thousands of rare plants and edibles, remains at the epicenter of Levy’s art making. Ricky Hunt’s work is influenced by Egyptian hieroglyphs, graffiti and his tumultuous past that led to a paradigm shift in creativity and life. On his sculptural and three-dimensional mixed media artworks he covers the wood panel with carefully placed nails and creates intriguing portraits with thread woven through the nails. The harmony of the overall filography composition finds its way through his intricate threading of yarn into a cohesive visual statement. Hidden within the patterns and markings of this string art portrait are limitless points of interest, constantly revealing the imagery in a new way for us to discover. His works have been exhibited at galleries and art fairs internationally, including Los Angeles, New York, Zurich, Hong Kong and London.
