Steven Nederveen
"The Depth of Night" - Seascape painting of crashing waves

2023

About the Item

Steven Nederveen's art is a testament to the complex and ever-evolving relationship between humans and nature. His vivid nature scenes, often seemingly uplifting and idyllic, also reveal the darker aspects of our connection with the natural world. Through his work, Nederveen explores the dualities of our relationship with nature - the love and destruction that can coexist within us. His masterful use of color and light illuminates the beauty and mystery of natural environments such as oceans and forests. In these idealized settings, Nederveen's art captures the essence of nature's power and the human desire to both control and be moved by it. The resulting effect is both heightened and profound, inviting viewers to contemplate their own relationship with nature. This stunning painting on wood panel measures 36-inches high by 48-inches wide and 1.75-inches deep. It is signed on the back by the artist. It comes wired and ready to hang, with the sides painted white. Free local delivery is available for those in the Los Angeles area. Affordable shipping is available for those outside of the region. A certificate of authenticity issued by Artplex Gallery is included with the artwork, ensuring that the piece is an authentic work of art from Steven Nederveen's collection. Provenance: Artplex Gallery, Los Angeles Nederveen received his Bachelor of Design from the University of Alberta in 1995, and soon after settled in Vancouver, BC. It was there that he first felt a deep sense of the sacred in natural surroundings, which inspired him to use his art as a means of exploring our connection to the natural world. His work speaks to the universal human experience of yearning for a harmonious relationship with nature while acknowledging the complexities and contradictions that can exist within us.

  • On My Mind - Minimalist Scenic Landscape Painting
    By Mike Gough
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
Gough’s interest in the elusive quality of memory has always been an invariable interest in his art practice. Rooted in memories of his upbringing in Newfoundland, Gough’s paintings are autobiographical but carry universal narratives. In the absence of detail there is an opportunity for one’s own memories to develop. An expansive solitude and sense of isolation is met with a universal feeling of what it means to belong. This unique 12 inch square mixed media painting on panel explores our relationship with memory and the natural world. This piece is signed by the artist on the back and is wired and ready to hang. The sides are painted white and the artwork does not require framing. Convenient local Los Angeles area shipping. Affordable Continental U.S. and international shipping also available. This artwork comes with a certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery. At its core, his practice explores how our relationship with the natural world connects and defines us. Working in mixed media, he endeavors to create familiar meditative spaces that exhibit a personal journey, but simultaneously invite the viewer to insert themselves in the narrative. These paintings partially stem from a fear of memory loss as a result of experiences with Alzheimer’s in his family. Not only does the painting process exercise Gough’s memory, but the paintings themselves act as records of his experience becoming a blend of reality and idealism. They are not painted from photographs; the places are not precisely rendered and the experiences are not accurately told, but they are Gough’s authentic recollection of them. The intent of his work is to create a patchwork map of memories as a guide back to the authenticity of human feeling.
