Abstract Mixed Media

ABSTRACT STYLE

Beginning in the early 20th century, abstract art became a leading style of modernism. Rather than portray the world in a way that represented reality, as had been the dominating style of Western art in the previous centuries, abstract paintings, prints and sculptures are marked by a shift to geometric forms, gestural shapes and experimentation with color to express ideas, subject matter and scenes.

Although abstract art flourished in the early 1900s, propelled by movements like Fauvism and Cubism, it was rooted in the 19th century. In the 1840s, J.M.W. Turner emphasized light and motion for atmospheric paintings in which concrete details were blurred, and Paul Cézanne challenged traditional expectations of perspective in the 1890s.

Some of the earliest abstract artists — Wassily Kandinsky and Hilma af Klint — expanded on these breakthroughs while using vivid colors and forms to channel spiritual concepts. Painter Piet Mondrian, a Dutch pioneer of the art movement, explored geometric abstraction partly owing to his belief in Theosophy, which is grounded in a search for higher spiritual truths and embraces philosophers of the Renaissance period and medieval mystics. Black Square, a daringly simple 1913 work by Russian artist Kazimir Malevich, was a watershed statement on creating art that was free “from the dead weight of the real world,” as he later wrote.

Surrealism in the 1920s, led by artists such as Salvador Dalí, Meret Oppenheim and others, saw painters creating abstract pieces in order to connect to the subconscious. When Abstract Expressionism emerged in New York during the mid-20th century, it similarly centered on the process of creation, in which Helen Frankenthaler’s expressive “soak-stain” technique, Jackson Pollock’s drips of paint, and Mark Rothko’s planes of color were a radical new type of abstraction.

Conceptual art, Pop art, Hard-Edge painting and many other movements offered fresh approaches to abstraction that continued into the 21st century, with major contemporary artists now exploring it, including Anish Kapoor, Mark Bradford, El Anatsui and Julie Mehretu.

Byzantium
Located in New York, NY
Ben Wilson Byzantium, 1975 Oil on Masonite painting Hand signed reverse, Titled, "Byzantium", dated 1975 by the artist and also with estate stamp - in addition to Ben Wilson's hand signature Frame included: elegantly framed in a handmade white wood frame with UV plexiglass This painting is done by the second generation Abstract Expressionist artist Ben Wilson - one of the youngest artists to be given a show at ACA Gallery in 1940. The work is signed by the artist on the back and also signed with the Estate Stamp and signature on the back. Ben Wilson was born in Philadelphia in 1913 to Jewish parents who had emigrated from Kiev and settled in New York City. He was educated in Manhattan public schools and graduated from City College in 1935. To gain exposure to a wider range of styles, he also studied at the National Academy of Design and at the Educational Alliance. Admired by critics throughout his long career, Wilson was singled out as a “discovery” by the New York Times art critic Edward Alden Jewel even before his first one-man show at the Galerie Neuf in 1946. His paintings of the ’30s and ’40s were expressionistically rendered, often Biblical parables, filled with what he called “the grief of the intolerable” and reflecting an acute awareness of the agony of the time, from the Holocaust to the Spanish Civil War. A WPA artist who identified strongly with the plight of the Jews in Europe, he relentlessly explored themes of war, torment, and futility in his early decades of painting. When times changed and social pressures subsided, Wilson’s mood lifted. He spent 1952-54 in Paris working at the Academie Julien. During the ’50s his involvement with specific imagery persisted but became more psychological and mythic in orientation. Influenced by Cubism, he created a vocabulary of interlocking shapes and bold, sweeping gestures that served as a transition between his early figurative expressionism and his later abstract constructivist concerns. Towards the end of the decade Wilson reached a crossroads, moving towards abstraction and searching for what he called “a scaffolding under the externals.” By 1960, influenced by the Russian Constructivists, Mondrian, and Abstract Expressionism, Wilson turned to abstraction. Reexamining the basic elements of painting, he evolved his own personal vocabulary and structure, fusing the cerebral and the emotive. He became increasingly experimental, using house paint, sand, and other unorthodox materials in paintings that he worked from all directions, dripping, spraying, stenciling, and collaging. He employed elements of disjunction, repetitions of geometric motifs, linear networks, and complex overlays to create the transparent, multi-layer development of space that characterizes his later paintings. A consummate draftsman, Wilson filled notebook after notebook with drawings that he amplified in his paintings. Eschewing popular movements, Wilson was always one to pursue a personal aesthetic. Despite more than 30 one-man shows and 50 years of teaching, he increasingly withdrew from the gallery scene but continued to paint daily until his death at age 88 in 2001 in Blairstown, New Jersey, where he and his sculptor wife Evelyn Wilson...

Geranium
Located in Llanbrynmair, GB
’Geranium’ By Yutaka Takayanagi. Medium - Relief and lithographic print Edition - 5/20 Signed - Yes Size - 510mm x 660mm Date - 1978 Condition - Excellent. 10 out of 10. Born in Tokyo in 1941, Takayanagi's artistic journey began when he enrolled at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1960, studying under the renowned oil painter Kaoru Yamaguchi. His talent was quickly recognized when he received an Honorable Mention at the 8th Shell Arts Award Exhibition in the same year. During his time at university, Takayanagi took an intensive course in copper plate printing under Tetsuro Komai, receiving his degree from the graduate school in 1966. Fascinated by the simultaneous color print method, he started creating copperplate prints and soon gained recognition for his unique metallic reliefs, which he produced using collages of English newspapers. Takayanagi's passion for experimentation led him to create metallic emboss reliefs using his own photographs, and in the latter half of the 1980s, he moved on to silkscreen prints. He continued to push the boundaries of his art, constantly exploring new techniques and mediums. In 1978 and the following year, Takayanagi was appointed as an arts researcher for the Ministry of Culture and traveled to the United States, France, and the UK. These experiences enriched his artistic perspective and further cemented his reputation as a highly regarded artist. Takayanagi was part of the influential printmaking group Sosaku Hanga, which emerged in the early 20th century in Japan. This movement emphasized the artist's involvement in every stage of the printmaking process, from designing the image to carving and printing the blocks. Takayanagi's work often incorporates elements of nature and landscape, with an emphasis on texture and pattern. He also experimented with collage, incorporating found materials like newspaper clippings and photographs into his prints. Takayanagi's work has been exhibited extensively in Japan and internationally, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. He has also received numerous awards for his contributions to printmaking, including the Japan Print Association Award and the Purple Ribbon Medal...

Untitled Abstract Expressionist Mid Century Modern unique ink wash on paper
Located in New York, NY
Mary Frank Untitled Abstract Expressionist Mid Century Modern drawing, 1965 Pencil and Ink Wash on Paper Signed and dated 1965 on the front This is a unique work Vintage frame with Christie's label included Original pencil and ink drawing, signed and dated on the front. This work is framed in original vintage frame with Christie's auction label on verso. Mary Frank is represented by the renowned DC Moore. Artist Biography (Courtesy of DC Moore): Born in London, England, in 1933 Mary Frank moved to the United States with her family in 1940. In the early 1950s she studied with Hans Hofmann and Max Beckmann. Frank works across disciplines as a sculptor, painter, photographer and gifted ceramic artist. Without allegiance to any particular way of working or medium, Frank is fueled by her ever present urge for direct and honest expression. Frank's process begins with some form of abstraction from which she teases out what she describes as a pre-existing time and atmosphere where events can take place. Her recurring imagery act as an alphabet, combined in order to evoke feelings of grief, love, sorrow, ecstasy, mourning and exultation. The artist has been the subject of numerous solo museum and gallery exhibitions, including the 2022 retrospective exhibition, Mary Frank: The Observing Heart, at the Samuel Dorsky Museum in New Paltz, NY, accompanied by a catalogue with essay by curator David Hornung, and Mary Frank: Finding My Way Home, which originated at the Asheville Art Museum, Asheville, NC, in 2014 and traveled to the Butler Institute in Youngstown, OH, in 2015. Work by Mary Frank was included in the Whitney Museum’s 2020 exhibition, Making Knowing: Craft in Art, 1950 – 2019, and the Brooklyn Museum’s 2020 exhibition, Out of Place: A Feminist Look at the Collection. Eakins Press Foundation has published two collaborations between Mary Frank and the environmental activist and author Terry Tempest Williams, the 2022 catalogue What My Body Knows and the 2020 catalogue A Burning Testament. Illustrations by Mary Frank were projected during Falling Out of Time, a song cycle composed by Osvaldo Golijov, which premiered in New York in 2022. In 2017, a solo exhibition at DC Moore Gallery coincided with the publication of the monograph, Pilgrimage: Photographs by Mary Frank, by the Eakins Press Foundation with texts by the poet and critic John Yau and Terry Tempest Williams. In 2014, the documentary film, Visions of Mary Frank, was produced and released by filmmaker John Cohen. Mary Frank (née Mary Lockspeiser; born 4 February 1933) is an English visual artist who works as a sculptor, painter, printmaker, draftswoman, and illustrator. Frank first exhibited her drawings in 1958 at the Poindexter Gallery in New York City. In 1969 Frank began her relationship with the Zabriskie Gallery in New York. Frank currently lives and works in Lake Hill and New York City. Since 1995, she has been married to Leo Treitler, a pianist and music scholar. Mary Frank's career spans five decades. She was elected to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters in 1984, the recipient of numerous awards and honors including two Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship Awards in 1973 and 1983, the Lee Krasner Award of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation in 1993 and the Joan Mitchell Grant Award in 1995. In 1990 she was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member, and became a full Academician in 1994. Working as a professor at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, Frank was honored with the title of Milton Avery Chair...
