The Italian writer and journalist, Gianna Manzini, writes this letter to the Italian talented costume designer, Maria De Matteis, to ask information about the promising "War and Peace" movie, that will be awarded by Oscar nominations for Best Director (King Vidor), Best Cinematography, Color (Jack Cardiff) and Best Costume Design, Color (Maria De Matteis). Gianna Manzini would write an article about one of the greatest film of all the times, that was about to be produced shortly!

The Italian writer, Gianna Manzini, is still today best-known for “Ritratto in piedi” that won the Campiello Prize in 1971. The 1940s and 1950s were a time of intense and personal literary activity and of investigation of international literature. Her works appeared in such periodicals as Campo di Marte, Letteratura, Oggi, La Fiera Letteraria, Milano-Sera, and Gazzetta del Popolo. Recognition for her writing grew with literary prizes awarded for Lettera all'editore (Premio Costume 1945), Valtzer del diavolo (Premio Soroptimist 1953), La Sparviera (Viareggio Prize 1956), Un'altra cosa (Premio Marzotto 1951), Allegro con disperazione (Premio Napoli 1968), and finally her last novel, Ritratto in piedi, was awarded the Premio Campiello in 1971.
War and Peace is a movie produced in 1956, based on the same-named epic historical drama by Toltsoy. Directed by King Vidor with a screenplay by Vidor, Bridget Boland, Mario Camerini, Ennio De Concini, Gian Gaspare Napolitano, Ivo Perilli, Mario Soldati, and Robert Westerby.
