Laurie Simmons received her BFA degree from the Tyler School of Art in 1971 and has since been constructing and photographing life-like narratives. As her subjects, she has been using dolls, ventriloquist dummies, finger puppets and costumed people.
After a move to New York in 1973, Simmons began taking pictures of her friends, but quickly found her niche in photographing dolls. She has since photographed small self-contained worlds that touch on nostalgia and memory. Simmons’s photographs capture “living objects,” that at first glance appear whimsical and childlike, but, in fact, take on an unnerving quality, with a deep psychological subtext.
Simmons has had major exhibitions including a critically acclaimed retrospective at the Baltimore Museum of Art in 1997, followed by an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. She has also participated in two Whitney Biennial exhibitions (1985, 1991) and received a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1984, a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 1997, and a Roy Lichtenstein Residency in Visual Arts from the American Academy in Rome in 2005. Laurie Simmons has an ambitious exhibition currently on tour. "Big Camera/Little Camera," a survey of some two hundred photographs, two films, and a selection of three-dimensional pieces, including props used in some of her staged tableaux. This exhibition opened at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas, from October 14, 2018 to January 27, 2019 and is now at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago until May 5, 2019. (A print of "Tourism: Chartres" is represented in the show.
Laurie Simmons’ engagement with non-human subjects ranges from her earlier works, in which she photographed miniature scenes of post-war domestic splendor, to her more recent use of life-size sex dolls that appear to be engaged in surprisingly believable activities. Vintage original folding exhibition pamphlet published on the occasion of a 1960’s exhibition in Stockholm at the Museet Moderna: September 29th-October 18th 1965. Features a reproduction of Rosenquist’s famed “F-111”. Folding out to four portions, the reverse chronicles an extensive interview (in Swedish) between Rosenquist & the museum. Rosenquist began the painting F-111 in 1964, in the middle of the Vietnam War. He positioned his main subject, the F-111 military plane, which was in development at the time, flying through fragmented images of consumer products and references to war. Through its expansive network of colliding visual motifs, F-111 addresses the connections between the Vietnam War, income taxes, consumerism, and advertising.
James Rosenquist was an American Pop artist known for his monumental paintings and prints.
