Larry Rivers LARRY RIVERS (hand signed and inscribed first edition book), 1989 Hardback monograph with a dust jacket (hand signed and inscribed "Enjoy the Matisse" Signed, dated and inscribed by Larry Rivers in red marker on the title page 11 3/5 × 9 4/5 inches Lavishly illustrated hardback monograph with dust jacket on the occasion of the artist's career retrospective. Text is by the distinguished art historian and Princeton professor Sam Hunter. Hand signed, dated and dedicated in red marker on the title page. Inscription reads: To Joanne and Ira Enjoy the Matisse Larry Rivers, April 2, 1992 About the book: Hunter, Sam. LARRY RIVERS. 358 pp. with 400 illustrations, including 155 plates in color. Folio, cloth. New York, Rizzoli, 1989. New York: Rizzoli, 1989. First edition. Hardcover. 358 pages. Retrospective monograph on Larry Rivers. Features text by Sam Hunter. Includes 400 illustrations of which 155 are in color. Publisher's Blurb: Rivers' public persona as an artist combines that of bohemian outsider, sensualist and entertainer. His best-known images of the 1960s--Dutch Masters cigars, French money, cigarette packs--became Pop icons. Eschewing abstraction, he came up with startling, disquieting figures, such as his obese, sagging mother-in-law depicted in the nude with brutal honesty ( Double Portrait of Berdie ). Yet there is more to Rivers than the hipster, as this lavishly illustrated monograph by a former Princeton art historian shows. Hunter makes a case for Rivers as a social realist: witness his powerful construction piece Ghetto Stoop or recent works that include searching portraits of Primo Levi...

"Fanti Fishing Boat" Modern Abstract Figurative Woodcut Print 47 of 86

By John Thomas Biggers

Located in Houston, TX

Abstract figurative woodblock print of a beach landscape with a boat. The print is stamped by the artist and titled and editioned in pencil. This print is editioned 47 of 86 and the print is not currently framed. Artist Biography: Born in Gastonia, North Carolina in 1924, John Biggers studied at Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) under Viktor Lowenfeld and muralist Charles White. In 1943, Biggers' mural, Dying Soldier, was included in the exhibition curated by Lowenfeld, Young Negro Art, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. After serving in the United States Navy, Biggers transferred to Pennsylvania State University where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees as well as his doctorate in art education. In 1949, Biggers accepted a faculty position at Texas State University for Negroes (now Texas Southern University) in Houston, where he founded and chaired the art department until his retirement. In the early 50s, he won prizes for his work at annual exhibitions held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Dallas Museum of Art. In 1957, he traveled to Africa on a UNESCO fellowship to study Western African cultural traditions, becoming one of the first black artists to study the culture first-hand rather than through library research. His work was profoundly influenced by his experiences in Africa. He was known for his murals, but also for his drawings, paintings, and lithographs, and was honored by a major traveling retrospective exhibition from 1995 to 1997. He created archetypal imagery that spoke positively to the rich and varied ethnic heritage of African Americans, long before the Civil Rights era drew...

"James BOB" Pop Art James Dean Painting 66 x 52 inch by John Paul Fauves From "Alts iz farloyrn" ("All is lost") series 2019 Mixed media, acrylic and oil on canvas 66" × 52" inch "Alts iz farloyrn" ("All is lost") "Alts iz Farloyrn” – the latest series by John Paul Fauves featuring large-scale mixed media paintings, sculptures, and his famous art masks. Inspired by American idols James Dean and Steve McQueen, "Alts iz Farloyrn,” which translates to "All is Lost," was Steve McQueen’s first ever line on stage and represents Fauves own struggle with losing it all yet discovering his true self. “Alts iz Farloyrn” dives deep into the darkness that surrounded James Dean and Steve McQueen and explores their need to live fast. Through this new series, viewers are reminded that although both men overcame challenges to become the Hollywood elite, they struggled to mentally escape their troubled childhood and demons. Recognized internationally for his Neo-Pop Expressionism, Fauves paintings deal with identity through art, mainstream culture and social media. About this series, Fauves says “I have personally lost it all and what I’ve learned is when you lose it all you can win it all again and create a new beginning!” ABOUT John Paul FAUVES: John Paul Fauves (born in 1980) is a contemporary Artist from Costa Rica . His artistic journey started at a very young age after he became a student of Joaquin Rodriguez del Paso , one of the most important Costa Rican modern art tutors. John Paul spent 15 years studying and mastering his technique, and only a few years ago he finally started showcasing his work. In his paintings he engages questions of identity as they relate to art history as well as our everyday interactions with mainstream culture and social media. Greatly inspired by modernist masters as wellas pop-artists, Fauves mixes fragments of different iconic images in vivid and colourful compositions. Of his experimental and high eclectic style, he says, “art is an expression from the soul, and the soul is somethinglimitless. This is why I am always searching for different elements to bring into the work.” 2019: Alts Iz farloyrn, Los Angeles, CA Portraits of Someone, London 2018: [ Mi / Me ] solo exhibition at DOPENESS ART LAB, Taipei, Taiwan Arte de La Peer Papi Chulo group exhibition, Krause gallery, NYC Down the Rabbit Hole group exhibition, Imitate London, London, UK ARCO Madrid Art Palm Beach, Miami 2017: Art Basel Miami PIXELS Pre-Basel group exhibition by JM Art Management at Laurent & Martin gallery LA Style Fashion week FACES, group exhibition by JM Art Management at HOMME gallery A Loss of Innocence, solo exhibition Guy Hepner...

Land of the Free Home of the Brave, Acrylic and collage on paper, Signed, Framed

By Peter Max

Located in New York, NY

Beautifully framed - ready to hang Peter Max Land of the Free, Home of the Brave, 2005 Acrylic and collage on heavy art paper Hand signed in acrylic paint on the front, the back bears the artist's copyright and unique catalogue/inventory # This work is elegantly framed with a raised float - a gorgeous aesthetic touch in a handmade white wood museum frame under UV plexiglass. Land of Free, Home of the Brave, is an original signed painting, an acrylic and collage on heavy art paper, that was part of a series the artist did in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City, with each variation in the series unique. It is hand signed in acrylic paint on the front and bears the artist copyright and stamp and the Peter Max unique inventory/catalogue on the back. Measurements: Framed 28 inches vertical by 22 inches horizontal by 2 inches Painting 24 inches vertical by 18 inches No artist of our time has reached such a vast global audience and influenced so many others who paint and draw than the legendary Peter Max. On a level comparable to Andy Warhol, but appealing to a broader base of art lovers, Max is the celebrity painter par excellence, an inescapable presence on the cultural consciousness since he burst on the scene in the 1960s. His art is in the collections of more than a hundred museums, many of which have given him solo exhibitions, as well as United States embassies, corporate headquarters and prominent private collections. Max was the first rock-star-scale artist. Even when he was only in his twenties, he was featured on the cover of Life magazine and appeared on late-night talk shows. Now revered as an “Old Master” of Neo-Expressionism, Max’s legacy has gone way past his graphic design origins and inspired generations of artists, including many gathered under the Park West umbrella. An instant media sensation when he made his debut in the 1960s as the go-to artist for the leading rock bands in the heyday of the Woodstock era, Max’s career became ever more public over the decades. At the invitation of the White House, he has made the portraits of six sitting United States presidents and scores of world leaders. He was named the official artist for the Grammies as well as the United States 2006 Winter Olympics team, the World Cup, the U.S. Open tennis championships, the Super Bowl and several music festivals, high-profile events that carried his signature style literally to billions of viewers. Peter Max’s amazing life story, as captivating as his art, was shaped by world events from the start to this day. The literal journey around the world has all the drama of an epic movie. He was born in Berlin in the perilous year of 1937. The next year, his father Jacob recognized that the family could narrowly escape the Nazis by taking the long ocean voyage to join the extensive Jewish refugee community in Shanghai. He has vivid memories living in an old villa across the street from the bright red columns in front of a Buddhist temple where the bells and incense made an indelible impression on him. He watched in fascination as they practiced their calligraphy with giant, five-foot long brushes that made huge Chinese characters on pieces of paper they laid on the ground. The young Peter was given brightly colored crayons and paper to play with by his mother Salla, but when she left the room, he started to draw on her beautiful set of Louis Vuitton steamer trunks...
