Abstract Paintings

ABSTRACT STYLE

Beginning in the early 20th century, abstract art became a leading style of modernism. Rather than portray the world in a way that represented reality, as had been the dominating style of Western art in the previous centuries, abstract paintings, prints and sculptures are marked by a shift to geometric forms, gestural shapes and experimentation with color to express ideas, subject matter and scenes.

Although abstract art flourished in the early 1900s, propelled by movements like Fauvism and Cubism, it was rooted in the 19th century. In the 1840s, J.M.W. Turner emphasized light and motion for atmospheric paintings in which concrete details were blurred, and Paul Cézanne challenged traditional expectations of perspective in the 1890s.

Some of the earliest abstract artists — Wassily Kandinsky and Hilma af Klint — expanded on these breakthroughs while using vivid colors and forms to channel spiritual concepts. Painter Piet Mondrian, a Dutch pioneer of the art movement, explored geometric abstraction partly owing to his belief in Theosophy, which is grounded in a search for higher spiritual truths and embraces philosophers of the Renaissance period and medieval mystics. Black Square, a daringly simple 1913 work by Russian artist Kazimir Malevich, was a watershed statement on creating art that was free “from the dead weight of the real world,” as he later wrote.

Surrealism in the 1920s, led by artists such as Salvador Dalí, Meret Oppenheim and others, saw painters creating abstract pieces in order to connect to the subconscious. When Abstract Expressionism emerged in New York during the mid-20th century, it similarly centered on the process of creation, in which Helen Frankenthaler’s expressive “soak-stain” technique, Jackson Pollock’s drips of paint, and Mark Rothko’s planes of color were a radical new type of abstraction.

Conceptual art, Pop art, Hard-Edge painting and many other movements offered fresh approaches to abstraction that continued into the 21st century, with major contemporary artists now exploring it, including Anish Kapoor, Mark Bradford, El Anatsui and Julie Mehretu.

Mid Century French Abstract Line Drawing Twin Female Figures Ink on Paper

Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire

Title: Mid Century French Abstract Line Drawing Twin Female Figures Ink on Paper Signed (initials) by Serge Guerin (b. 1916), French Black ink on paper, unframed Size: 19.75 (height) x 12.75 (width) inches Provenance: private collection, Paris, France Condition: good and sound, light handling to sheet and faint age toning consistent with age; deckled edges present Description: An elegant and meticulously balanced ink drawing by French modernist Serge Guerin, this mid-century composition captures two mirrored female forms rendered in flowing black lines. The symmetrical structure and interwoven contours create a sense of duality and rhythm, merging sensuality with abstraction. Guerin’s precise yet fluid style distils the human figure into an almost architectural motif, evoking both Surrealist automatism and the graphic minimalism associated with the post-war Ecole de Paris. The subtle interplay between curved and angular forms reveals the artist’s deep understanding of balance and design. Executed in crisp black ink on textured wove paper, the work exemplifies Guerin’s refined linear technique and meditative control. The paired figures may be read as symbols of harmony, reflection, or unity—an exploration of femininity abstracted into pure form. Signed with the artist’s monogram in the lower right, this drawing would suit collectors of modernist works on paper, mid-century line art, or minimalist figurative compositions. Keywords for collectors and interiors: French mid century abstract, modernist nude, twin figures, symmetrical line art, Ecole de Paris ink drawing...

Star Trek - Large Original Abstract Painting Ready to Hang

By Bruce Rubenstein

Located in Los Angeles, CA

The paintings of Bruce Rubenstein seamlessly marry sophistication with affordability. His original art merges the creative attitudes of the two distinct art hot spots of New York and Los Angeles. Rubenstein's work has a rigid edge and strong composition but maintains organic shapes and soft colors as well. His works have a character that brightens a space. His paintings pull from abstract expressionism and cubism but maintain a contemporary edge that strikes the viewer. His work seems collectively new and timeless at once. This large affordable one-of-a-kind 42 inch high by 66 inch wide and 1.5 inch deep artwork is a mixed media composition on canvas. It is stretched, wired, and ready to hang. This large abstract painting is signed by the artist on the front and back of the artwork. The sides are painted and it does not require framing. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable Continental U.S. and worldwide shipping available. Provenance: Artplex Gallery. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included. While the artist has chosen to keep the price upon request, this captivating piece embodies both sophistication and exceptional value. Bruce Rubenstein specializes in large-scale artworks, using huge canvases to tell his stories. Born and raised in New York, he moved to Los Angeles in 1985. His mixed media artworks defy categorization, blending abstract forms and organic shapes with subtle hints of figures and symbols. Adrien Brody and Mickey Rourke are among Rubenstein’s collectors. Bruce Rubenstein’s artistic influences include artists from Joan Miró and Jean Arp to Gerhard Richter and Pablo Picasso. “He is an artist, and that means someone who cannot restrain the flow of ideas,” says author David Rodgers. “He is someone who they just burst out of, who cannot help but communicate, and who sees no reason to stop. He’s a man not limited by media to communicate the stories that he needs to (and must) tell, through any medium he feels necessary.” His works are represented by Artplex Gallery Los Angeles and have been exhibited and collected worldwide, including exhibitions in Austria and Israel. Rooted in Solitude- Vivid, colorful, Expressive Abstract, Zen Calligraphy

Located in Rockville, MD

Cymn Wong’s style of mixed media paintings are developed alongside with pastel, crayon, acrylic and ink. Rooted from traditional Chinese ink-brush painting to contemporary New York Abstract Expressionism, Wong wields various free and fluent but forceful strokes and creative washing on canvas atop the heritage of her personal Zen calligraphy; in some cases, Cymn has collaged with traditional Chinese papier-mâché. Through the layering of multiple marks, colors and textures, or being used by perspective, she is able to balance her own spontaneity and control to accomplish the desired effect. When Wong applies to blend her canvas with splash-ink, free dyeing and deliberate sealing, her aim is to create a vivid and immersive sense of expanded spectrum that integrates the outsider viewers with the painting landscape. These stylistic elements combine to create an organic entity that is dynamic, engaging, and deeply contemplative. In exploring the blending entity of art and poetry as extrinsic “landscape” and intrinsic “soundscape”, the brushstrokes are hereby given fresh impetus by a single-unity involvement. Every brushstroke reflects an outer and inner state of creativity. Meanwhile, this embodied experience opens up a transformation and imagination of mindset. Wong declares, “By embracing plainness, simplicity and intimacy, my art emerges an insight for cultivating a cross-boundary ecological ethos. In most recent development of my paintings, I have been focusing on several key areas that are driving for a creative exploration. Firstly, I am placing a greater focus on the bean sprout as a central element of her work. The bean sprout is a crystalized symbol. Its unique shape evokes the numbers "0" and "1". The "0" of the bean sprout represents nothingness or emptiness, a void spectrum that is co-birthed with “1”. The "1", on the other hand, represents possibilities and growth. By incorporating the shape of the bean sprout into visual language, I link the binary concepts of "0" and "1" to convey a sense of stillness, calm, and openness in the other area of "0". Meanwhile a motion, another state of change comes birth in the open area of "1", building in a dynamic interplay between these two facets for growth and inherent continuously in every subsequent moment. Secondly, I attempt to create an alternative way of revealing the insightful wisdom of Zen philosophy, in a fusion of fluidity and freedom of abstract expressionism, siding along with the contemplative practice of Zen calligraphy. This integration of meditative peace and passionate energy presents a fresh landscape that is holistically dynamic and contemplative, evocative and reflective. The Zen strokes that feature prominently refer to the hope of splashing an endless creativity at any stage of life. Thirdly, in organizing a larger-scale of art forms, I gradually move to create a sense of unity and wholeness that highlights a stimulating dimension of cultural diversity in my painting canvas. Moreover, I strive to develop a stronger sense of spatiality by leaving white space blank within the compositions, which provides a stimulated sense of circulation and contingency, for an experimental interaction of fulfilling the gaps of different 3-D dimensions in life. Last but not the least I embrace my intuition of self-awareness under my personal practice of integrating multiple refreshing technical elements, that always plunging into the fundamental questions of man’s existence and the nature of living being. I appeal to the worldly communities for a spirit of connection and resonance that may well go beyond the surface of my painting art.” From 2022 to 2023, Cymn has extended a soul karma in her Washington saloon that spearheads to create a masterfully-suited-style of global ethos. The ethos showcases her accomplished selfhood of aesthetic views blending with both Eastern and Western cultures and languages. Wong attempts to vitalize the diversity of built-in imageries and present the visual art communities via a dynamic interaction of natural human passion with the uncontrollable social environment and the universe. In fact, Cynm’s lifelong commitments to bilingual poetry and expanded visual art have been widely applauded in multiple international platforms whereas her English...

"The Playful Journey" Acrylic on Copper Abstract Composition 1997

By Stephen Schulz

Located in Soquel, CA

Bold and dynamic abstract composition titled "The Playful Journey" by Stephen Schulz (American, b. 1948). Schulz has used various types of acrylic paint, mixed with silicon to create a variety of textures. Signed and dated "Schulz 97" on verso, with an inscription that reads "For Leo and his Beautiful Family". Wood support frame on verso. Stephen Schulz (American, b. 1948) is an artist who has lived and worked in Fresno and Santa Cruz, California, and Cedar Grove, New Jersey. He has studied privately with Julie Connell, Jan Daniels, Michele Faia, Elle Fielder, Sal Pecoraro, Susan Stover, and Chris Volpe. Artist’s Statement: “My painting and artistic expression opens the doorway into an unconscious and creative world, where an uninhibited expression can take place, as one becomes immersed without the perception of time. Painting and design started it. From the beginning the process of transforming materials into art has struck me as a magical alchemy and, over the years, that mysterious process has had its hold on me, leading me from hobby to art. The creative process fills me with a sense of wonder and has proven a most amenable vehicle for transforming inner vision to outer reality. I paint from the inside out. Though I work quite deliberately, consciously employing both traditional and innovative techniques, my unconscious is the region of the most fertile of creative soil. I love working with a full complement of colors but often find my design direction working within the narrow spectrum of black and white, shadow and light. Some of my early inspiration comes from the New York School and artists such as Franz Kline and Jackson Pollock. Their ideas and techniques have helped to free my mind to explore areas of the unconscious that aren’t restricted by the world of right and wrong, good and bad. The journey continues and I feel blessed to have the opportunity to explore this exquisite world of the creative process.” Education: University of Oklahoma: 1966-1967 Canada College, AA Degree: 1972-1974 University of California: 1974-1975 Exhibitions: 2014 - Studio show Fresno, CA 2010 - Dubai (UAI) Animal rights show; Gallery 10, Washington, DC 2008, 2009 - Jia Salon & Gallery, Fresno, CA 2007 - Studio Exhibition 2006 - Cabrillo College 2004 - Studio Exhibition 2000, 2001, 2002 - Rollf's Gallery, Fresno, CA 2000 - Studio show; Bridgeport Gallery, CT 1999 - Tercera Gallery, Los Gatos, CA; Matt Miller Design, SF, CA 1998 - Robin Hutchins Gallery, NJ; Teroera Gallery Los Gatos, CA; Verve Gallery Los Angeles, CA; Open Studio Aptos, CA; Brigitte Bohlem, Hamburg, Germany 1997 - Robin Hutchins Gallery, NJ; Teroera Gallery, Los Gatos, CA; Verve Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; The Pope Gallery, Santa Cruz, CA; Hanson Art Source, Tennessee 1996 - Robin Hutchins Gallery, NJ; Teroera Gallery Los Gatos, CA; Verve Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; The Pope Gallery Santa Cruz, CA; Hanson Art Source, Tennessee; Barlett Fine Arts, Pleasant, CA; Birchstone, Gallery, Wisconsin 1995 - Abrahamsen Design; Teroera Gallery Los Gatos, CA; Verve Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; The Pope Gallery Santa Cruz, CA; Hanson Art Source, Tennessee; Barlett Fine Arts, Pleasant, CA; Birchstone, Gallery, Wisconsin; l&I Gallery, NJ; Gillen Design, London Ontario Canada...
