Scottish Sea Coast of Iona
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Exhibition-sized painting of Iona Island coast by celebrated Scottish artist Duncan Cameron (1837-1916), this is a large and expansive 19th century landscape oil painting on canvas. Renowned for his landscape paintings, this work captures the natural light on the sea, sand and rocks with splashes of rich color under a big sky.
Iona off the west coast of Scotland, has attracted artists for for its dramatic scenery and northern light, including the Scottish Colourists who favored the fresh pure light. The cliffs and coastal rocks are reminiscent of works by Samuel Peploe and Duncan Fergusson of this fabled island.
In 1876 Cameron won a Gold Medal for landscape painting, at the Crystal Palace exhibition. The year after this painting (circa 1870s) Cameron began exhibiting in the Royal Academy, Society of British Artists, and Royal Scottish Academy, showing his work consistently from 1880. Other venues for exhibiting his work include the Glasgow Institute, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, Manchester City Art Gallery, and the Royal Hibernian Academy. His work is sold today in Fine Art Galleries in the UK and in Saltire Gallerie, USA. His landscape paintings are widely acclaimed, and this landscape painting of considerable size and detail is a fine example. Born in Perthshire, Cameron studied in Dundee and in South Kensington, London. He later died in Edinburgh. The highest auction sale of his work reached nearly 20,000 GBP. He was widely acclaimed as a landscape artist, painting Scottish farmlands and haystacks, coastal scenes and lochs.
In this work the colors of the sea change from blue to green with white crests of waves. The rocks have splashes of red, rust and orange, and the beach has red and green in the sand. Water laps at the edge of beach and rock. A sailboat is a focal point, with distant sailboats on the water, and a rowboat by the central sailboat. A hill rises behind the beach painted...

Friends (Just the Guys)
Located in Greenwich, CT
American, b. 1949
In his more than three decades as an artist, Nicholas Berger (b. 1949) has created an outstanding body of work that continues to evolve and excite viewers. Best known for his industrial, waterfront scenes of New York between 1930-1970, Berger effortlessly captures a period when the technology and landscape of the city was rapidly changing. Although he paints scenes of a bygone era, Berger draws inspiration from the waterfronts near his home in New York’s Hudson River Highlands as well as historical sources in museums. Berger holds BFA and MFA degrees from Alfred University.
Earlier in his career, the artist painted representational landscapes rendered in watercolor, a medium in which he achieved great success, sharing a sellout two-person show in Tokyo with Andrew Wyeth. In the mid-2000s, Berger transitioned to his signature industrial scenes of the city, employing oil on panel in a painterly manner influenced by the Hudson River and Brandywine schools...

Loch Awe and Kilchurn Castle
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Loch Awe and Kilchurn Castle is a landscape oil painting on board by 19th century artist Edward Train (1801 -1866). Train was a British artist, painting mostly landscapes in northern England and, like this one, in Scotland. The painting is signed E. Train (lower left) and dated 1850 or 1856, the last number being too faint to be certain. From 1850 to 1880 Train flourished as an artist, but his work was exhibited in galleries in northeastern England and Edinburgh from the 1830s.
Born in Gateshead, Tyneside, Train left to take an apprenticeship with a London engraver. In the 1830s Train traveled with an expedition to the Hebrides and Shetland Islands. Here he became fascinated with the Scottish scenery that would become part of his repertoire of landscape art.
Loch Awe lies in the west of Scotland in Argyll and Bute. Kilchurn Castle, built in the 16th century, lies on a peninsula inside the Loch, on the water's edge. Train would have traveled to the Highlands and painted the dramatic scene from the east banks of Loch Awe, across from the Castle.
This painting captures the Highland mountains, loch and castle that was very much the ouevre of this artist's work. Train painted the Highlands decades before other renowned landscape artists of the 19th century, such as Alfred de Breanski, Louis Bosworth Hurt, Douglas and Duncan Cameron...

Mighty oak on a gold-leaf background by Italian botanical artist
Located in Milan, IT
The artist has an elegant mark of nature, and the experience of working en plein air allows her to capture emotions that would otherwise not be possible.
She is considered Italy's best botanical artist and collaborates with many botanical gardens where she also holds watercolour courses, a technique she masters like few contemporary artists.
The artist herself prepared the background in real, stainless gold, which gives it a modern, warm surface that chameleonically matches the colours of the surrounding walls.
Margherita Leoni was born and raised in Italy, however, she spent most of her adult life in San Paulo, Brazil. It was there that she started a collaboration with the botanical faculty of the local university, allowing her to develop interesting research in rare botanical species studies and drawings. For this reason, most of her artworks, illustrate Brasilian botanical species, both rare and common. The artist's mastery of watercolour allows her to take part in botanical expeditions where she paints in plein air. Given her exquisite watercolour technique and her extensive botanical knowledge, Margherita Leoni is considered the heir of Margaret Mee.
Among her most important exhibitions, three of her artworks were selected by Shirley Sherwood...

Contemporary Brown Pale Light Forrest Landscape By Danish Steffen Bue
By Steffen Bue
Located in Frederiksberg C, DK
“Folehaven” is a beautiful forest scenery by the Scandinavian (Danish) contemporary artist Steffen Bue.
In this work, the artist draws his inspiration from the pale light of spring. He gradually brings out the nuances and intensity of delicate natural light dancing in between the trees, up until the level when the light catches an intensity that becomes sharp to the eye. The color palette is limited as he works with deeper nuances to capture the harmony created between the warm and cold colors that are characteristic of a forest in spring.
Acrylic on canvas with dimensions 70cm (H) x 99cm (W) (27,5in. x 38,9in.). This work is monogrammed “S...

Still Life of a Poppy, Iris and Peonies in a Glass Vase
Located in London, GB
Oil on canvas
Image size: 23 1/4 x 19 1/2 inches (59 x 50 cm)
Dutch Ripple frame
PROVENANCE
Private Collection, London
Here a glass vase containing an exuberant display of flowers stands on a ledge. With only one known exception, Verelst included vases in all of his flower paintings.
The asymmetrical arrangement of the flowers fills most of the canvas and the vibrant bouquet contains peonies, a bearded iris and a poppy set amidst a perfusion of twisting leaves and stems. Poppies were one of Verelst's favourite flowers and were commonly featured in his still life's.
This painting shows a superb understanding of light and colour that is consistent with Verelst's other works. Indeed, the strong contrast between the brightly lit, the colourful blossoms and the surrounding darkness lends to the flowers and foliage a hyper realistic quality and a strong sense of three-dimensionality.
The Artist
Verelst was born in The Hague in 1644 and came from a family of painters. His brothers Johannes and Herman also became painters and, like Simon, were trained by their father.
In 1663 Simon became a member of the Confrérie Pictura, the painter's association in The Hague, and soon afterwards moved to nearby Vooburg with his brother Herman, who also painted flowers. In 1668 Simon he moved to London where the Duke of Buckingham became his principle patron and on 11 April 1669 he met with Samuel Pepys. He was enormously successful in London and his elegant portraits became popular for a time during the 1670s among court circles. He painted this portrait of Prince Rupert, son of Frederick V, Count Palatine and Elizabeth Stuart...
