Fannie Burr was a highly accomplished painter and one of our earlier American women artists! This very contemporary, fresh and appealing floral study was done circa 1895!! The rarity of this and its virtuoso execution could lend it to being in the collection of a Connecticut museum. Along with her sister Jennie, they were known as the "Burr Sisters". They did focus on paintings of still life and nature which would have been acceptable for a female artist of the period. Fannie studied at the Yale School of Art and then the Art Students League in New York. She was assistant to Julian Alden Weir a major CT impressionist, while he was at Yale teaching.
The composition is avant-hard for this date! It is in an exceptional hand carved 22 karat frame of high value, Art Nouveau style.
In the estate of 700 or so paintings by Fannie and Jenny Burr it was found that they did not sign most of the paintings. They were not selling their works or represented so much so this is understandable. This has a great provenance!

Mighty oak on a gold-leaf background by Italian botanical artist
Located in Milan, IT
The artist has an elegant mark of nature, and the experience of working en plein air allows her to capture emotions that would otherwise not be possible.
She is considered Italy's best botanical artist and collaborates with many botanical gardens where she also holds watercolour courses, a technique she masters like few contemporary artists.
The artist herself prepared the background in real, stainless gold, which gives it a modern, warm surface that chameleonically matches the colours of the surrounding walls.
Margherita Leoni was born and raised in Italy, however, she spent most of her adult life in San Paulo, Brazil. It was there that she started a collaboration with the botanical faculty of the local university, allowing her to develop interesting research in rare botanical species studies and drawings. For this reason, most of her artworks, illustrate Brasilian botanical species, both rare and common. The artist's mastery of watercolour allows her to take part in botanical expeditions where she paints in plein air. Given her exquisite watercolour technique and her extensive botanical knowledge, Margherita Leoni is considered the heir of Margaret Mee.
Among her most important exhibitions, three of her artworks were selected by Shirley Sherwood...

Jadviga Žilvinska (1918-2010) was born in Tallinn.
She grew up in Liepāja, where her great interest in art began and strengthened, which led the young artist to study at the Art Academy of Latvia. During her studies at the Academy, she studied with K. Ubāns, V. Tone and J. Liepiņš, and defended her diploma thesis under the guidance of L. Liberts. Later on, she devoted her entire life to art, working at the Liepāja School of Fine Arts and as a portraitist at the "Māksla" combine.
She had four favourite themes: landscapes, portraits, flowers and sacred painting. Her works have lyricism and inner harmony. In the portraits, we see not only the outer form of a person, but the artist allows us to look into the very essence of a person - it is likely that the models themselves often saw something new and bright in themselves through the artist's vision.
The works are executed in various techniques - tempera, oil, pastel and watercolour.
CV:
1938 - Graduated from the Liepaja Secondary School of Applied Arts, Department of Decorative Painting.
1943 - Latvian Academy of Art, L. Liberts Figurative Painting Workshop with her diploma work "At the Artist's"
1946-1948 - teacher of painting and drawing at Liepāja Fine Arts High School.
1948-1966 - portraitist at the "Māksla" combine
Participated in exhibitions since 1948.
Member of the Artists' Union since 1966.
Solo exhibitions in Riga, Jelgava, Sigulda (1972); Riga (1975; 1978; two in 1981; 1986; 1994), Jurmala (1979).
Works exhibited in Latvia as well as abroad (Poland, Switzerland, Italy, Japan, Finland, Venezuela, Germany, Hungary).

"Birch, " Oil Paint on Olive Board
By Bruno Surdo
Located in Chicago, IL
Chicago-based fine art painter Bruno A. Surdo is classically trained in drawing and oil painting in the tradition of Renaissance masters. With strong command of the human form, Surdo creates dynamic compositions of people and places that communicate a rich commentary on the world around him. Depicting trees from personal encounters, Surdo’s latest body of work entitled “Tree Spirits” takes us on a foray into the forest, where leaves, branches and burls express something deeply personal. Artist Biography: From Switzerland, he became noted for his paintings of Alpine mountains, although he also painted scenes from his travels in Germany and especially Italy. He studied with landscape painter, Francois Diday, and by 1835, had sold a landscape to the museum in Bern. He also exhibited with the Paris Salons beginning in the late 1830s.
Calame lived most of his life in Geneva, but in 1863, he moved to the French Riviera for health reasons.
His composition method was often placing a large clump of trees at one side of the painting and "a sharply receding diagonal leads away from it to a view, often of mountains in the far distance." (83) It was a motif that had much appeal to American collectors of that era, and one of his landscapes, a part of the bequest of James Suydam...
