'Dancing Stems' by Jo Haran is an original paitnng of lively rose stems and dark inky leaves in a dynamic composition. I used touches of neon pink acrylic paint in the flower heads for a contemporary look.
'There are always flowers for those who want to see them" - Henri Matisse. I have been painting flowers for over 20 years as an artist and as a senior textile designer selling prints to clients internationally including Valentino, Leonard, Paul and Joe and high street brands such as Topshop and Marks and Spencer. My love of florals started at a young age - brought up in Somerset in a family of horticulturists and an artist father, I would paint in the vast garden as much fascinated by the leaves as the flower heads themselves. I'm interested in exploring the fragility and beauty of the natural world, the lightness and translucency of petals and the texture and multiple colour in foliage. I work spontaneously in layers of mixed media on watercolour paper - gouache, watercolour ink and gesso - striking for a fluid tension between detailed areas and soft focus with always a strong compositional element.

- Flowers II, 2020, Mary Finlayson, Gouache on Paper- Floral/Still Life/BlackBy Mary FinlaysonLocated in 326 N Coast Hwy. | Laguna Beach, CAMary Finlayson Flowers II Gouache on Paper 22.5 x 17 inches, framed Mary Finlayson’s interest in painting interior spaces portrays how environments reveal identity. Navigating the themes of intimacy, memory, and self, Finlayson’s gouache paintings reflect the vulnerable narratives unveiled through ownership of possessions. Flattening the perspective of each scene, her still lifes provide a voyeuristic glimpse in to each curated space. Considering the personal attachments and importance of objects, her compositions skew and distort to capture the feeling of a space rather than an accurate depiction. Rendered with vivid color and an emphasis on texture, Finlayson creates spaces that are partly real and partly imagined. Mary Finlayson lives and works in San Francisco as an artist, teacher, and art therapist. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Queen's University, a Graduate Degree in Art Therapy...Category
